A common guideline in design is to try to limit the number of materials in a space - it's a helpful maxim but there are plenty of exceptions that prove the rule. In particular, heritage properties love texture. This project is an old favourite of ours, and it's the details and harmony of the many finishes that make it such a winner. A careful blend of warm, natural materials are used to particularly great effect here. A weathering steel koi pond abuts a unique, untrimmed timber fence. It’s been about 3 months since the winter seeds were sown. That’s the typical wait time for most veggies to grow and it’s now time to begin harvesting. Rapini or broccoli rabe can be found for a few weeks each year in Italian grocery shops. And this was where I purchased my first bunch to taste. Now I grow it instead. Rapini is more closely related to turnip than broccoli, somewhat bitter and peppery, like rocket and mustard. The Italians cut the leaves and stalks into chunks, blanch quickly then sauté with EVO, garlic and chilli flakes. It can be a side dish topped with Parmesan, but is commonly added to soups, pastas and pizzas etc. I like growing rapini for its health benefits but it’s also a generous plant untroubled by pests. Anyone else a fan?

Harvested my pumpkins today and did a little stocktake: 28 butternuts and 4 huge sweet grammas. And I also found, very unexpected, one last sugar baby watermelon hiding amongst the vines. Fully ripe with yellow belly. You beauty! That will be a last taste of Summer 😀 Some of the butternut squash were not ripe, but I sacrificed them to tidy up the verge were they were growing and to make sure no one will snatch them before me. 😜 Green pumpkins can still be used similar to zucchini. I also still have two large pumpkins from last year. Most others have been eaten and there is always some that don’t store that long, but most meat make anything from 6-12 months. However only, if they get a regular clean, let’s say every two months. Some fluffy white bug is always affecting them during storage, but if you are on top of things and keep checking on them, it isn’t an issue and cleans off easily without leaving any sign of blemish afterwards. The flesh of very old pumpkins may become a bit soft and dehydrated, but they still make delicious pumpkin soup, like my thai pumpkin soup version today. My friend Sara introduced me to kohlrabi last year. I’d seen it around of course but had never eaten any. So I tried the white and it was surprisingly tasty, reminding me of potato, sweet potato and swede. Unlike potatoes though, the bulb develops above ground. It seems quite hardy and while a slower grower than my broccoli (almost mature), it will be an interesting addition to the menu. You can see both colours in the photos. I’ll post again when it’s harvested.
There can be great advantages to having native, waterwise plants in your garden. For example, native banksias produce vibrant flowers but require little watering once they’re established. In the cooler months of April and May (Djeran season), when banksias start to flower, we will see them attract a variety of small mammals and birds looking to feast on the available nectar. We are slowly reducing the extent of turf and replacing it with biodiverse planting to attract native fauna.
