I started this painting approximately 4 years ago and finally finished it last month. After I'd heard the 5 Buddhist Precepts being spoken As Gaeilge by one of the wonderful order members in Triratna at the Dublin Buddhist Centre, I felt really moved. As a non-native of Ireland I was inspired to connect with the language with the connection of Buddhism and weaving together those two aspects. 🇮🇪☸️ I referred to Celtic Knotwork books I'd got whilst doing my art GCSE (over 20 years ago). I fussed over making them 'perfect' which I had to let go of. I enjoyed looking at the Irish hare and the Irish oak to weave in some Irish nature and connection. Nah ans Wasser gebaut 💧 hat diese Eiche und hat damit einen Standort, der zügiges Wachstum garantieren sollte und das seit vielen Jahrhunderten. Die Wikingereiche, wie dieser monumentale Baumveteran in Mitteljütland genannt wird, hat immerhin einen Stammumfang von 8,30 Meter. Ist es möglich, aus dem Umfang einer Eiche auf ihr Alter zu schließen? Wir probieren das mal: Durchschnittlich nimmt auf guten feuchten Böden der Stammumfang einer Eiche in ihrer Jugend (also ungefähr bis zu ihrem 200. Geburtstag) um ca 2,5 cm jährlich zu. Das heißt, die Wikingereiche könnte in 200 Jahren einen beeindruckenden Umfang von 5 Metern erreicht haben. Anschließend dürfte sich das Wachstum deutlich verlangsamt haben und der Stamm wurde nur noch rund 1 cm im Jahr dicker. Für die Umfangzunahme von 5 auf 8,30 Meter hätte sich die Eiche folglich über 300 Jahre Zeit gelassen. Ein Alter von rund 500 Jahren könnte realistisch sein. Und wenn der Umfangzuwachs stets weniger betrug als in unserer Annahme? Oder mehr? Ganz einfach, dann liegen wir mit der Berechnung voll daneben und die Wikingereiche ist nur gut 300 Jahre alt oder im Gegenteil über 800. The heavenly scent of heirloom lilacs are perfuming the air around my gardens, creating an atmosphere of pure bliss. The old time lilacs from decades ago are still the most fragrant, and always take me back to my childhood. They are the quintessential harbingers of spring in the New England garden and many older homes have stands of lilacs dating back to the mid-1900’s. My trees were planted when the original home was built in 1940. With a little love and corrective pruning, they have continued to provide us with bountiful blossoms year after year. 💜 A few other fragrant beauties are popping up around the landscape and I wish you could smell them all! What a wonderful time to be in the garden! 4) Phlox divaricata ‘May Breeze’ has a delicate, sweet scent 5) Calycanthus floridus, sweetshrub, smells like strawberries and whipped cream 6) Unknown tree peony, but my first to bloom! No noticeable scent 8) Dwarf Fothergilla gardenii fits perfectly in a garden border, it’s brilliant white flowers illuminate the landscape and have a soft, baby powder fragrance 10) My ancient Cercis canadensis, redbud, is dwarfed by the massive pin oak, Quercus palustris. The flowers are masses of tiny pink clusters all along the stems. Have you looked up lately? 👀 As you soak up the long-awaited spring sunshine, take a look above you. All around us trees are bursting into bud with many covered in flowers – from frothy blossom to more subtle, dangling catkins. Here are a few to look out for in the Garden this week: 🌳 Native hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) and bird cherry (Prunus padus) are full of clouds of white blossom and are an early source of nectar for bees. 🌳 The horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) looks spectacular at this time of year displaying its large flower spikes or ‘candles’. 🌳 The English oak (Quercus robur) dangles long, yellow-green catkins in the springtime. These are the male flowers. Look closely and you’ll see tiny pink female flowers buds between the newly emerging leaves, promising future acorns. 🌸 Why do trees’ flowers vary so much? It’s all about pollination! Some species rely on pollinators visiting colourful or fragrant blooms, like the hawthorn, cherry and horse chestnut. Others, like the oak, depend on the wind to spread their pollen so their flowers hang down into the breeze. 🔎 When trees flower each year offers us clues about climate change. The retina itself forms from brain tissue during foetal development and contains nerve tissue, making it part of the central nervous system. The retina is like a translator in your eye. When light hits it, your retina converts it to a signal your brain processes and understands. Quercus bicolor DUB DVOUBAREVNÝ Zajímavý dub dvoubarevný Quercus bicolor. Má rád vlhčí půdy v blízkosti řek a bažin, kde dorůstá výšky až 20 metrů. Zajímavá je kůra, která se u starších stromů odlupuje v jednotlivých deskách. Mohutné listy jsou 10-20 cm dlouhé a až 10 cm široké se šedozelenou spodní stranou s chloupky. Pokud je podzim teplý a slunečný, zbarvují se listy do oranžovočervena.
