Book Review // ✨ A Study in Drowning ✨ Author: Ava Reid Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 𝘈 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘋𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 is a lush, immersive dark academia story beautifully crafted and ideal for the fall season! I savored every moment of this haunting story and sweet romance. While categorized as YA, it rarely felt as such and explored some adult themes. It did feel on the short side and could have used more depth pertaining to the war that was mentioned and glossed over, but I understand I'm not the target audience so I'm ok with some of my questions remaining unanswered there. At times, Effy was not a character I necessarily liked, but I enjoyed how she was portrayed as an unreliable narrator, and it piqued my interest. I loved her flaws and her quirks, and I grew to have a greater connection and understanding of her by the end. I very much enjoyed Preston's character, and the two made such a great pair. Some of the themes were slightly repetitive and pushed a bit too hard for my liking, especially for a YA novel, but the gothic setting and gorgeous prose were both so well done that I didn't mind some of the themes as much. I highly recommend picking up a copy this fall! It's certainly my new favorite from Ava Reid. Also, how stunning is this edition from Waterstones?! So, this morning I get a text out of the blue from a guy who's heard I make knives. He's buggered up a *really* nice Japanese blade and he wonders if I can fix it. I say I'll try, we meet, and I take the knife home. Typical of these high quality knives, the cutting edge is brittle as can be (that helps it keep wicked sharpness.) I ground a new profile and made a very small secondary bevel. Then I took it to the stones: 1000 grit, 2000, 4000, and finally 8000 grit. I'm not very hairy, but trust me, this knife just shaved a bald spot on my forearm. I'll get it back to him tomorrow. #japaneseknives #waterstones #scarysharp #blacksmith #bladesmith

Mini Book Review. Saltblood by Francesca De Tores From @bloomsburypublishing , the @waterstones edition is 😘 🌊 A different kind of historical fiction featuring the legendary female pirate Mary Read. This book has become quite beloved, so let’s not jump at me for what I am about to say. I didn’t love it. I liked it enough to finish but I did struggle through. I found the pacing incredibly slow, which for me is a big turn off. The story being a retelling from history wouldn’t be a problem for me if the story felt like I wanted to be apart of it but I didn’t, I very much felt like I was reading from a history textbook. The writing was stagnant, I didn’t find whimsy in the narrative and personally I like easy reading that pulls me into a new world and this didn’t do that. The characters are what kept me reading. They were fleshed out and flawed. I liked the relationship being told and was rooting for Achilles and Patroclus, which meant the ending did hit hard. However, I’ve been told time and time again that the ending would wreck me and I would cry - that didn’t happen. I felt pain for characters. But when I read a book that I become absorbed by I want to feel pain for people I know, I want to feel like those characters are real to me. Oběd v Poppies nadchnul všechny fish&chips lovers🍟 @popsfishnchips . A pak výprava milovníků Harryho Pottera do Warner Bros Studios @wbtourlondon (cesta tam Uberem, zpět jsme využili bezpatný shuttle na Watford Junction a odtud vlak do centra). Jedinečný zážitek, určitě doporučujeme vyhradit si cca 2-3 hodiny času. 🇬🇧 London Book Haul 🇬🇧 Der heutige Montagsstack ist mal nicht in Farbe, sondern mit meinen gekauften Büchern aus London 😁 Es war natürlich unmöglich, in London nicht in einen Buchladen zu gehen. Im Waterstones Piccadilly, einem sehr schönen großen Buchladen, haben wir bestimmt zwei Stunden damit verbracht, uns durch die verschiedenen Abteilungen zu blättern. 🛍️ In Oxford waren wir im alteingesessenen Blackwells, den es seit 1879 gibt und der mittlerweile mit mehreren Filialen existiert. Dazu gehört auch der Norrigton Room, der größte Raum mit Fachbüchern, mit fast 3 Meilen an Bücherregalen. Hier findet man auch ein Antiquariat mit Erstausgaben. Wer 25.000 £ übrig hat, kann dort eine frühe Herr der Ringe Ausgabe kaufen. 📚 Auf dem Bild seht ihr die Bücher, die im Warenkorb gelandet sind.
