Hello from a very glum and grey NZ! It's been a week of drizzle - I'm already over this weather. At times like this, it's so nice to escape to somewhere more appealing with a book, and this one is set in Edinburgh in the summer. Have you ever visited? I've been a few times but I'd be very happy to keep going back! So, this is my first Alexander McCall Smith - better late than never, right? I know he has many fans, so I was super curious to finally try one, and The Perfect Passion Company has a fun plot. Katie has just taken over the running of a dating agency, with the help of neighbour William, and it's her job to match people up who are searching for love. She finds success matching an airline pilot turned farmer who discovers a new passion for cookery, as well as a hotelier with an overbearing mother, all the while trying to deny her attraction to the very appealing but engaged William... This is what I'd describe as a gentle, quiet novel, full of keen observations, philosophising and thoughts on love and attraction. It forms three distinct parts, two of which have apparently been published as novellas. I didn't know that before reading, and I thought the book flowed well regardless. It's written with a light hand, it's very easy to read, and the tone is sweet and hopeful. The side characters seeking romance provide a few challenges for Katie, but for me The Perfect Passion Company was all about Katie and the very appealing William. I loved that he was far from a conventional leading man - although handsome, he makes a living producing designer knitwear. I very much enjoyed the dialogue between the two of them, and while I did want to give both of them a bit of a hurry up, I also appreciated how their friendship developed. This was very much a happily ever after book, with romances that worked very easily and no surprises. I totally expected that, though - the pleasure in a book like this is in the writing and the feel-good vibe. While it was a little light for my tastes, I get the attraction and I'm not surprised at all by his wide appeal as an author. AD-Pr I love these books I find myself getting immersed in them, the characters, the descriptive language and the conversations within the stories, just beautiful. The strength in the women in these books are a joy, along with the fun and laughter it totally engages the reader. This is book 24 in the series, I have read a few, in no particular order but I aim to read them all. It takes me a couple of pages to get into the writing style them I’m lost in the pages and transported to Botswana to the No1 Ladies Detective Agency with Mma Ramotswe and her assistant Mma Makutsi. Books I am reading at the moment (or will start soon) Have you read any of them? The first is a book by Father Sophrony (Sergei Symeonovich Sakharov, 1896-1993). His most famous book is perhaps not this one but a biography on Silouan the Athonite (1866-1938) whom he met and that meeting changed his life. The second is The Way of a Pilgrim in Swedish. I have read some of it before and like it a lot. Then Eragon by Christopher Paolini and the last is one of the No1 Ladies' Detective Agency. We so love Alexander McCall Smith's books and a friend sent us all theirs as they never read them anymore. And we are very much captured by this book about the boy Eragon and his adventures. There's always that one book that simply insists on converting likeable characters into annoying ones. This one's it. The Unbearable Lightness of Scones paints a story where; nothing much BUT a whole lot of things are happening - all at once. I've got a plutonic relationship with this series because I'm not even on the fence between loving the book and hating it. I'm just settled comfortably in between - without any doubt. What I do appreciate is the mention of the coffee-making process which Lou enjoy immensely... And yeah. That's about it. I might just pick up secondhand copies of the books in the series. As mentioned in the previous post, I've not actually read the first book. SO. (I forgot the mention that reading this book in particular could be a little confusing for those who don't know much about the locality.) If you need a little unnecessary drama in your life, this book is for you. Update: I can't believe it has been two years since reading the 4th book of the series #theworldaccordingtobertie (2007). But I’ve been in full planning mode leading up to a trip to South Africa. That said, this was another charming read in the Isabel Dalhousie series by McCall Smith. These books are friends you can return to for more chapters in their story. What he does do well, is you can read them in any order or not read all of them. My type A personality wants to read them in order (of course) so I wait for when I find the next one in a charity shop or the library. And there’s some fun in that too. . .
