Eagle-eyed visitors to The Queen Elizabeth II Walled Garden on Dumfries House estate will notice a new feature adjacent to the main gate from The Maguire Arboretum. Chris Waltho and Matthew White of @wpj_greenhouses have been hard at work in recent weeks to complete the installation of a new glasshouse at the foot of the five-acre walled garden. The new facility houses bedding plants after they have been sown as well as 3000 herbacious perennials for the parterre borders within the walled garden. Once those have all been planted out, the indoor area with be used for "wintering" exotic palms and carrying out wet-weather jobs like painting furniture. Thomas Chippendale Four-Poster Bed in @dumfrieshouse, Scotland. The Palladian country house is noted for being one of the few such houses with much of its original 18th-century furniture still present. This tester bed is the only known surviving bed from a design in Chippendale’s Director. Refurbished in the nineteenth century, it has now been returned to its eighteenth-century glory following painstaking research and restoration by Carvers and Gilders of London. Secondary school groups can now book a range of workshops at our state-of-the-art MacRobert Farming and Rural Skills Centre. Aimed at pupils aged 14 and older, the workshops now open for booking are Introduction to Practical Farming, Spring Cattle and Spring Sheep. "In these unique workshop experiences, pupils will gain an insight into practical farming by working hands-on with some of our livestock," explains Jacqueline Farrell, education director for The King's Foundation at Dumfries House. 🦃 Farm Fridays! Each week throughout May, we are marking the arrival of newborn animals in Spring! Pied Crollwitzer Turkeys are among the most popular animals on Valentin's Education Farm, as well as the most vocal. The chirp of newborn turkey chicks heard around the farm in recent weeks will eventually build to a crescendo of gobble-gobbles in the coming months. Shetland Geese (those with the grey markings in the images here) resident adjacent to the turkeys (all yellow). 🐏 Farm Fridays! On Fridays throughout May, we are celebrating the newest arrivals on the estate. Home Farm on the Dumfries House estate is home to around 800 sheep — mainly Suffolk, Cheviot, Lleyn and cross-breeds — but there are also several rare breeds, including Castlemilk Moorit, Boreray, and Shetland. In the past few weeks, the farm team has helped deliver numerous Moorit, Boreray, and Shetland lambs. Today is the final day of my two week residency at Dumfries House in Ayrshire. I arrived feeling very run down and exhausted, unable to anticipate how valuable this time would be to stop, step away from studio work and rest. I've spent part of my days here in a beautifully appointed studio, playing with ideas for a small self-motivated project. I hope to share more on that at a later date. The rest of the time I've been romping through the surrounding grounds and countryside amongst ancient trees and wild bluebell glades. To say I feel restored is an understatement. Very good news from the RBST (Rare Breeds Survival Trust) this week that the King is to maintain his patronage of the organisation. He has been in the role since 1986 and is incredibly committed to the protection and promotion of our British Rare and Native Breeds. I visited Dumfries House last week, owned by the King’s Foundation, which houses an array of rare and native breeds, including these Vaynol cattle, one of Britain’s most critically endangered breeds (with fewer than 150 registered breeding animals). Dumfries House is one of the King’s Foundation flagship enterprise schemes and runs skills programmes for people of all ages, including animal welfare, food production and sustainable farming practices. The native breeds - of which there are a large variety - are part and parcel of this experience. 🐷 Farm Fridays! On Fridays throughout May, we are celebrating the latest new arrivals on the estate. Peggy the rare-breed Landrace pig recently welcomed five newborn piglets to Valentin's Education Farm on Dumfries House estate. Peggy and sow Boris, produced five pedigree Landrace piglets, some of which may be offered to other breeders to further expand the breed's population. As with all the other animals on the estate, Peggy and the piglets will help children on The King's Foundation's farm education programmes to learn about where their food comes from, how to look after animals, and the uses of bi-products. 🏦 Taster Tours of Dumfries House are available this weekend as we welcome the renowned @boswellbookfestival to the estate. Guests are invited to participate in these tours of our 18th-Century country house by booking via the link in our bio. 🍽️ Woodlands restaurant is open on Saturday and Sunday, with availability throughout the day. A combination of local produce and internationally-inspired dishes feature across a menu of starters, mains and desserts including options for vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free diets. To book your table, call 01290 425 959 (Option 0) between 9am-5pm on weekdays. 🏞️ Visitors to the estate this weekend should also be aware that car-parking will be at a premium due to the sheer number of people expected here. The Barony Road entrance to the estate (nearest to Auchinleck) will be closed to vehicles. Access to the gardens, including The Queen Elizabeth II Walled Garden, will remain unaffected. We would advise, where possible, that visitors walk and wheel their way onto the estate.
