Some more steps forward in my joint project with @maxjacquard, honouring the 2,500-3,000 year old Yew trees of Ulcombe, Kent. We spent a good few hours on Friday making contact microphone recordings and doing close up filming of one of the trees. This shot was taken from inside a trunk where death and rebirth coalesce. Met this absolute beauty yesterday, the c.350 year old oak at Baginton, near Coventry. So sprightly and lush for one so venerable (a lesson for us all…) It has a fragrant elder wrapped around it, some glorious oak apples (a traditional source of a kind of ink) and even a mysterious face in its trunk. A passer-by told us that it’s said to be the face of someone who got trapped in the tree! Deadvlei is a surreal and beautiful place. Some 900 years ago the clmate dried up and dunes cut off Deadvlei from the river. It became too dry in Deadvlei for the trees to even decompose. They simply scorched black in the sun, monuments to their own destruction. Also at Rycote Park, next to the chapel, is this well-formed Yew, about 7.6m in girth and recorded as planted in 1135 to mark the coronation of King Stephen. It’s hard not to think about history in a different way in the presence of something older than each of the world’s 3 major mono-theistic traditions. We were given secret directions to a hidden giant by @intheshadowofgiants1, who has aged this tree as 3500yrs in age. It’s a mind bending sense of time to consider. We were half of only 20 known current humans to experience this monument to nature. Growing and bearing witness to creation for more than 3 millennia. I wonder what a year feels like to this tree? What’s a season when you are older than most of civilization? I wonder what Einstein would have thought about time had he stood in the presence of such greatness? Does the theory of relativity apply to a tree? Moments like this in my life bring a deep sense of gratitude, and an awe that is beyond language. R.I.P. Crockmere Oak Today i was not expecting to witness the collapse of this beautiful specimen of an ancient oak tree. It was thought to be over 500yrs old sitting at the bottom right hand edge of Savernake forest. One of the few named trees within the ancient hunting forest. I have walked past this tree as a child and now as a adult. I never thought i would see it fallen. Oak trees have the potential to live way up to 1000yrs old. It is a sombre reality that the mighty do eventually fall. This tree unfortunatly seemed to be in somewhat hollow and and rotten. It had a lean to it which i suppose put a target on its back. I will remember the memories of walking past it when on my way to see others, but now all i can think is at least it now provides a brilliant home and space for insects and invertabrates which thrive on rotting deadwood. This year we were able to return to Manlin to visit our farmer friends. We spent the afternoon hiking to their two forest gardens. Despite the drought, which has reduced production of leaves by more than half, the surrounding forest was still vibrant and healthy - buzzing with wild mountain bees and abundant with wild fruit and herbs. The hidden gems of Cheltenham and Chipping Campden... 🌳Fruit trees all around are starting to blossom; these two orchards both received grants from Caring for the Cotswolds last year and show the true heritage, community and biodiversity value of orchards! 1. Weavers Field Orchard, Warden Hill, Cheltenham 📍 This new community orchard boasts 34 freshly planted heritage fruit trees in an effort to restore what was once a traditional orchard. Plum trees untouched since the 1950s line the edge of the field, leading back to a forested area with bountiful wildlife. @cheltenhambc hope to boost biodiversity, converting the grass to a wildflower meadow over the next couple of years. 2. Wolds End Orchard, Chipping Campden 📍 This ancient orchard hosts over 125 trees, some as old as 150 years, and has open days across the year. This magnificent ancient boab is looking the healthiest I’ve seen it since it was transplanted in Kings Park in 2008. We followed its journey down from the Kimberley while travelling around the Pilbara with Kel and Shannon. Each day Russell Woolf would give an update on the ABC of where it was, talking to the group transporting the giant tree. We passed it coming past Dongara. The tree is estimated to be between 800 and 1200 years old!
