Deadwood is a crucial component of the Forests ecosystems. Not only does it play an essential role in sustaining biodiversity, but it also delivers important ecosystem services. Deadwood plays a key role in processes such as soil formation and nutrient cycling. As wood decomposes it returns important nutrients to the soil, supporting new growth. It also supports up to a fifth of woodland species that depend on dead or dying wood to complete their life cycles, including birds and mammals! Many of these species are considered rare or threatened. Guess who’s back! …. Chicken of the woods!!! A beautiful mushroom that I took home and made dinner with as soon as I got my hands on it!! Very excited to find it 💛 I’ll never get over the feeling of getting caught in the rain and finding delicious mushrooms in beautiful green spaces whilst in the company of my amazing friend. I took a little instagram break on this account and it turned into 7 months of not posting a thing 🤣 I’ve still been foraging in my spare time in-between a busy work schedule still enjoying going to beautiful places and spending anytime I have spare in nature. I’m looking forward to catching up on all your grid posts since I’ve not been on here scrolling. Since February I’ve been working really hard with my mum and daughter on a very overgrown allotment plot, what’s really exciting is all the established plants that were already in the plot. We have grape vines, gooseberries, raspberries, Logan berries, honey suckle, strawberries to name a few (basically every berry you can think of I wont list them all 🤣) we’ve planted lots of veg and we are growing sweetcorn, pumpkins and beans in one plot called the three sisters technique. An avenue of Dawn Redwood (메타세쿼이아; 水杉; metasequoia) trees near Gyeryongsan National Park, South Korea. The tree was considered extinct, with only fossil specimens, till a small stand of the trees was discovered by a botanist in Hubei, China, in the early 1940s. The tree would otherwise have probably died out, but has since been propagated about the planet. The shortest of the Redwoods, it still grows to well over 150 feet; a deciduous tree, its fine and slender needle-like leaves turn auburn and copper in autumn, before falling. Another #nationalbiodiversityweek2024 event was held over the weekend, this time at our magical Lecarrow Wood nature reserve and nursery in Co. Roscommon Incredible weather welcomed ourselves and our guests on site for our third event of @irishenvnet @national.biodiversity.week. 24 Degrees, blue skies and a warming wind. Our walk began at our local provenance nursery site, where we discussed how our local volunteers are helping us to allow nearby ancient woodland St. Johns Wood to expand for the first time in hundreds of years. Collecting seeds, propagating and planting them on site less than 500m from their parent trees. We learned about local provenance tree, hedgerow and fruit tree planting on site, meadow management and our ambitions to scale up our nursery activities. From there, we entered the first of two areas that comprise Lecarrow wood. Surrounded on all sides by ancient hedgerow that has been allowed to spill into what was a bare field, the first section is that of emerging native woodland. The foot soldiers of ecological succession; of blackthorn, bramble and other scrubbly pioneers that are creating the conditions necessary for establishment of larger species to grow among them, such as oak. A marvellous lesson in rewilding, assisted natural regeneration, and the speed at which both can happen. At last, before we were melted by the sun, we entered Lecarrow Wood proper. Ancient laneways and crumbling stone walls now serve as wildlife superhighways, all nestled under a dense canopy of Ash, Hazel, Holly and Oak. Other favourites whom we had to pay visits were young Yew trees, Irish Whitebeam, a raft of wildflowers including primrose, herb robert, lords and ladies and yellow-rattle. And, just before the trail breaks onto the banks of Lough Ree, the woodland wished us well with swathes of delicate early purple orchids. We spend some time at the waters' edge admiring yellow-flag Iris and learning more about the geology of the area before turning back.
