Long post warning… Attending a market dog event today left me utterly astonished I had hoped that the people attending this event would be staunch advocates against any forms of animal cruelty. It’s disheartening to witness the number of individuals who were unwilling to sign the petition to end greyhound racing. Many of them defended their love for gambling on dogs and horses, but I can’t help question if an innocent animal’s life is truly worth that cheap bet? Can we truly be at ease knowing the conditions these innocent creatures endure, the horrific injuries they suffer, and the alarming number of reported deaths? Why is a greyhound not valued and cherished like a golden retriever, a dachshund, or a French bulldog? This glaring contrast in perception speaks volumes about the kind of person you are when you support such a horrendous industry and condone animal cruelty. I will continue to fight and be the voice for these incredible creatures. We need a positive change and to break free from the toxic patriarchal paradigm of gambling. It is time to end exploitation of innocent creatures for the sake of entertainment or financial gain. I take a lot of pictures of Taylor curled up, peacefully sleeping. When I brought her home nearly 4 years ago, I was told she needed a soft bed as she had “active decubital ulceration on both lateral hocks.” Basically, bed sores on both her back legs from lying on a hard surface. They had to be monitored for inflammation and infection. With only 48 hours til I picked her up, I went to Kmart and found the softest, fluffiest bed I could. It took a couple of days before Taylor even went near it - a thin blanket on my wooden floorboards was her initial preference 😢 (that, or my garden bed 😅) I know hardly anything about her first 2 years of life. Sometimes I wonder about it, other times I’m glad I don’t know. But what I do know, is Taylor is one of the lucky ones. To have multiple warm, comfortable beds, plenty of food and a human who loves her so much it hurts 🥰 Hopefully, one day, all greyhounds will be afforded the same protections as all other breeds of dogs, and not seen merely as disposable commodities 😢 Hopefully, one day, all greyhounds will be able to curl up and peacefully sleep in a soft, warm bed, with a full tummy, curled up next to a human who loves them. #petsnotbets #bangreyhoundracing
