So I’ve put on almost a stone since Dad passed away, comfort eating on some very, very low days and lacking the energy to exercise due to grief and stress. A bit disappointed in myself as I’m usually quite disciplined with my diet and exercise. I kinda need to be with my heart conditions - especially as I never know when I might be facing open heart surgery again. Anyway, I’ve finally restarted the gym and healthy eating. 🕵️‍♂️I must be honest- I don’t read crime novels that often but when I do, there is one thing I expect from their authors: not making it too easy to realise who is the murderer. And god dammit, William Hussey did not make it easy. On the contrary, I had absolutely no clue who was going to be revealed as the bad guy right until the very end. Hell, I was just as confused as our main character Scott Jericho! The case he was working on seemed to be incredibly theatrical and like in a gothic novel. Other things that were happening to him were just too perfectly timed to be accidents. Still, knowing all that I had no idea who could be responsible for the murders, so just like Scott I was suspicious of every single person in Scott’s life. This book was just a pleasure to read, right from the start. The characters were all interesting, even if some played a part of a racist child killers or annoying paparazzi. Scott himself was such a complex character, definitely morally grey but oh how lovable and impossible to hate. Once again, William Hussey has taken his time to talk about mental health of his characters and the impact things in their life have on their behavior and way of thinking. I love how real William Hussey characters are, how they’re never just caricatures and how most of them have their good and bad moments (except racists, I approve beating them into a pulp)! The ending blew my mind! I did not expect this rollercoaster of emotional confusion I was served! I also absolutely adore the fact that in this book some people do not get happy endings and holy duck I love the fact that William Hussey understands that some people do not deserve it. Don’t worry though, justice is served just… in a very different way than you’d expect. Nonetheless, this book was amazing and the only reason I’m giving it half a star less is because of the complete mind quack I had in the first 30% of it. Ey up Bookstas, I first came across @whusseyauthor 's work when we read Broken Hearts & Zombie Parts in our Book Therapy book club. So I knew he was a good writer that based elements of his stories on his own life from that, BHAZP was a YA novel which was enjoyable but I loved this adult's detective style novel a lot more. : Scott Jericho grew up with a travelling show - loved this element of the story I find the lifestyle very interesting. If anyone knows any documentaries etc let me know. I remember watching and loving a TV programme years ago about a travelling circus family, aside from that they seem pretty hard to come by probably because as mentioned in the book they can be very private exclusive communities! But anyway I digress, it was a lifestyle he left behind for a while to pursue a career in the police. : After a few traumatic events that lead to him locking himself away in a depression, he ends up re-integrating with the world to solve a case that someone REALLY wanted to get hold of him specifically about. It involves some pretty grisly murders and connects to the travelling community's history. It gave me Seven (the film) vibes actually and I thought it was really cleverly done. : Some people from his past pop up, at times raising suspicion and we're kept on our toes with who he can fully trust. Yet again, William Hussey does not disappoint with book 2 in the Scott Jericho series.  Jericho's Dead is a gritty, gory, tense, unputdownable crime novel, much like book 1, Killing Jericho.   Scott Jericho is a disgraced former police officer, whose temper often gets the better of him.  I like the background of the character, and the travelling fair community he is part of.  He is complex, which makes the books more suspenseful.  There are various background characters that appear throughout both books, and I like this continuity, although you could read either book as a stand alone read.  I look forward to reading the next installment. Jobless, he’s back with his family; a group of Travellers who operate a fairground - and he’s trying to fit back into a way of life he thought he’d left behind after telling them that he was gay and leaving them to join the force. Soon he’s back in contact with his old colleagues - a murderer is on the loose emulating kills from an old story Jericho remembers from his childhood; a folk tale passed around by the aunts in his family. Convinced he knows something the police are missing, or perhaps that the killer is someone close to the Traveller community, he takes the investigation into his own hands. • I’ve gotta say when I read the synopsis of this one I was instantly intrigued. I can’t think of another recent novel featuring a Traveller main character, ditto a gay one. It’s such an under represented world in fiction and culture at large, and so rarely are they given the space to share their own stories. I grew up as part of that community and the parts of the story here where Scott grapples with his own place within it as a gay man really resonated with me. The language and structure of the Travelling community depicted here rang true for me and it was great to see it represented. The crime aspect itself is fairly gruesome, it reminded me a little of Mo Hayder’s stuff; grimy and grim, Hussey doesn’t stray away from the darker aspects of the crimes explored here. But there’s a social commentary aspect too, questions of belonging and larger issues of contemporary British life. All in I enjoyed this one but I took away something quite personal from it, too. • #WilliamHussey #KillingJericho

Scott Jericho is a flawed hero; a former police officer pulled back into the sleuthing game by circumstance. Hussey has crafted an incredible three-dimensional protagonist who feels all too real in the best possible way. The central mystery in “Jericho’s Dead” unfolds at a breakneck pace with relentless twists and turns that keep the solution just out of reach for the duration. When the ending comes, it hits hard and fits firmly in the world Hussey has created. The threads left dangling as we (hopefully) head towards a third novel in the series. There is a dark, looming presence over this novel in the form of the first novel’s twist-reveal villain (who I won’t name here because, y’know, spoilers) but somehow Hussey makes this figure even more intimidating with far less page-time. This character, coupled with the threatening new antagonist from Scott’s past, offer a delicious tension that never seems to go away. Killing Jericho by William Hussey 🎪 (audio) Book Review 📚🐷🎧 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 📝 Well, damn! I didn’t see that coming. What a fantastic and inspired twist. When reading thrillers I’m always suspicious and constantly trying to figure out characters actions and motives. Now, sometimes I’m pretty close with my guesses and/or who the criminal mastermind is, but not with Killing Jericho. Oh, no!! Yes, I was right to be suspicious of a character or two, but not their reasons and/or the whys and definitely not how it all linked together. Mind. Blown. 🤯 I love Scott Jericho. He is my favourite kind of detective, (albeit a disgraced ex one), because he is troubled, flawed, plagued by his past and a little naive. All of that aids in creating a complex, sarcastic but ultimately likeable, maybe even loveable, character. I listened, (as I read along), via the audiobook and was so pleased I did. The narrator, Damien Lynch, really brings Scott Jericho to life. It’s hard to explain but, from what we know & learn about Jericho, Damien Lynch’s voice just fits perfectly. He is exactly how I imagine SJ to sound including all his quirks & mannerisms. I loved the audio & hope Damien returns to voice SJ again in book 2, Jericho’s Dead because I’ll be, not only buying the hardback, but also getting the audiobook so I can listen & read along again. 🎪 ⚠️The story and murders are dark, twisted and, (for me), extremely gruesome, so be prepared! Forced back into the Traveller fair life he grew up in and previously rejected, Scott is drawn back into the crime fighting world when a series of bizarre ritual murders mirrors a family tragedy more than a century prior. Meanwhile, he has to deal with the criminal he let get away that led to his downfall, his prescription drug addiction, a journalist hounding his every move, the family he left behind, and the reemergence of his first love. I did not love this book as much as I thought I would. I have no idea what I was expecting, but this was a lot darker and grittier and more horror-adjacent than I wanted. I liked Scott Jericho and how atypical of a gay protagonist he was. Depressed, unmotivated, and haunted by his past failure, he sets the somewhat solemn and dreary tone of the book. He exhibits moments of brilliance that made him a great detective, but the book has him make some pretty foolish choices that just frustrated me to no end (mostly about keeping unnecessary secrets and delaying important discussions for no good reason). The mystery itself is twisty and well thought-out, the crimes macabre and horrifying, and the atmosphere gothic and sort of menacing. There was also this subtext about the Traveller subculture which I had known nothing about so it mostly went over my head. I do think Killing Jericho delivers on its premise; I may just have missed with my expectations so that’s on me. 📕 BOOK REVIEW 📕 “Killing Jericho” by William Hussey I have apparently actively avoided entering into the world of Scott Jericho for almost a year now. Since the original release, I have had the digital copy of “Killing Jericho” ready to go and for whatever reason (my own stupidity I would guess - though it could be the bleak black hole that is my ever expanding Kindle Library) it has just continuously been pushed back on my TBR further and further. Now that the paperback edition has been released, I have finally jumped in and I regret waiting so long, because William Hussey’s novel is utterly fantastic. Following disgraced former detective Scott Jericho fresh out of prison, “Killing Jericho” is a twisted tale of murder that uses an old fairground legend involving the protagonist’s family to build an unforgettable tale. There are a lot of elements here that feel fairly standard for modern crime fiction; the down-and-out detective, the grisly murders with a tie to the past, the mysterious killer seemingly taunting the hero from the shadows. All of this has been done before, but Hussey injects his debut with enough originality and charm that it feels truly unique. Having Scott Jericho’s fairground family background be a key element gives the book a different kind of twist that feels essential to the character’s identity, while the primary relationship giving a strong LGBTQ focus that feels wonderfully natural and offers some great diversity to this style of story. There are elements towards the last act of “Killing Jericho” that reminded me quite heavily of another novel I adore by a very famous crime author who has risen in popularity over the last decade. I won’t go too much into that because it will spoil this book if you’ve read that novel or know that author, but it wasn’t enough to detract to how shocked I was by the final set of twists here - even though, for me at least, they reminded me of something else.
