📚▶️▶️ Now, Now, Next ⏭️📚 This could have been Last, now, next but I’ve already lent out my copy of Blue Sisters 😜 I must confess I am in the minority who thought it was just good rather than perfect 🫣 As I am always reading 2 or 3 books at once anyway, this post can be be now, now and next! ▶️ Now – I spontaneously picked up Brotherless Night last week – the fact there’s a bookshop next to my dry cleaners is very dangerous. But I’ve been wanting it for a while now 🫠 Still only 70 pages in or so but I’m loving. ▶️ Now – I have been putting off Thursday Murder Club for ages as I thought the first was only ok! But as it’s my boyfriends favourite series, I was nagged into giving the second a go. But I’m enjoying the 2nd is so much more - it’s such fun and gentle story. Sometimes you do just need an easy book! ⏭️ Next – this is such a privileged problem, but the proofs are piling up and I need to read some of them! I feel so so lucky to be able to say that but I need to not be the worst bookstgrammer and actually read some of them 🫠

An EXTREMELY solid 4.5/5. I think the only thing keeping me from a 5 is wanting to spend even more time with these characters. I feel like this sequel was such a step up from the first book in almost every way. The mystery was a bit more intriguing (and while as we raced towards the end, some aspects of the mystery became fairly clear before the big reveal, it was still overall a more shocking mystery), the writing just seemed stronger because the author had a better grasp on this world, and the main characters were all fleshed out more satisfyingly. I felt like the first book relied a bit too heavily on the main characters being old bit without backing it up to make the characters feel dimensional, but from the start this book set out to make sure the readers felt like they knew the characters much deeper. This also meant diving into more of the characters’ psyches (including secondary characters outside of the main 4) which led to some surprisingly touching moments. If you told me I would get teary reading this book, I would’ve thought you were crazy. This is the kind of book that makes you want to tear through the rest of the series and regret that you found this series while it was still being actively published because you cannot imagine waiting to get more content. #bookreview #themanwhodiedtwice #richardosman

Both witty and entertaining with plenty of laughs, there are also some really bittersweet moments in these books. This is the second book in the series, and I definitely preferred this one to the first book, I feel the plotline was better, and there was more character development. Joyce is my favourite septuagenarian. She is completely sublime and I found myself chuckling the most at her chapters. I love how her mind wanders, her competitveness with Elizabeth and that instagram username! I've also got a soft spot for bad boy Bogdan! The blurb... It's the following Thursday. 👵🏻💀👴🏻🔍 This is the second book in the series and I enjoyed it immensely. It’s such a feel good novel and I definitely like it better than the first book. You learn more about the characters in “The Thursday Murder Club” and get a sense of their backgrounds, especially the mysterious Elizabeth. “The Man Who Died Twice” focuses on Elizabeth’s ex-husband. He is revealed to be working for MI5 which is also where he met Elizabeth. Elizabeth also used to work at MI5 which explains her keen eye for detail and all the favors she calls in when investigating a crime with her friends. Elizabeth investigates the murder of her ex-husband while trying to find out where he hid $20 million pounds worth of diamonds. This novel contains the mafia, local drug lords, petty criminals and murder. Overall it was a great read and constantly had me guessing who did what. I really appreciated the ending and how the author manages to wrap up everything in a nice little bow and address all reader’s concerns. Every character gets what they deserve. I love the friendships between “The Thursday Murder Club”, the local police force, and Bogdan, it’s so cute and heartwarming. Side note: Bodgan is young and hot? I had no idea. When Connie Johnson and Donna are interested in Bogdan I was kind of confused. I didn’t realize that Connie Johnson was also young (younger) like Donna. I thought Bogdan was like in his 50s like Chris, but he’s young and hot? The ladies in this novel are taking a liking to him. I love Bogdan, he’s such a great friend. He’ll help you with anything, no questions asked. Need to buy $10,000 pounds worth of cocaine? No problem, he’ll do it. Need to set up a meeting between the mafia and the local crime lord? 📚BOOK/AUDIOBOOK REVIEW 📚 The Thursday Murder Club Series By @misterosman The Man Who Died Twice (Book 2) The Bullet that Missed (Book 3) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Honestly at this stage I feel like Richard can do no wrong- he is King of the Subplot. For me, a good mystery/detective plot should literally feel like you need a case board where all the clues given are tied and linked together by red string. There is nothing more satisfying than all the pieces coming together at the end, it is simply *chefs kiss. Richard nails this in each book and melts my head trying to put it all together (but I do feel I am getting better each time, just call me Elizabeth 🕵🏻♀️) Add to that the absolutely barmy and loveable OAPs and you have a great combo! As always Joyce is my favourite 💛 If I strive to be anything when I grow old it is to be "more Joyce". Her POV adds a levity but this time round I also felt a depth sensitivity from her in both of these books. Getting fed bits and pieces of her past, and her perspective on the present gives the novel a personable feel. I did both of these books as part audiobook as well and feel a special shout out is needed for Lesley Manville and Fiona Shaw! What incredible women who don't have to dramatically alter their voice to give each character a difference and individuality. I particularly love Lesley's Joyce and Fiona's Ron! If you love quirky old people, heartfelt friendship, and meaty mysteries then this series is for you! Book Review 📚⭐️ THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE by Richard Osman; published in 2021 Once again, I found myself wanting something totally different to read and figured this book would work. I was right. It worked splendidly to cleanse my mind and palette. Elizabeth gets a letter from someone she has history with. He has made a big mistake and now needs help. Very quickly things go out of hand and actual bodies start piling up. As things proceed it is very clear that whoever is behind it all will not hesitate about killing anyone else. Especially when millions of dollars worth of diamonds are at stake. Will the Thursday Murder club solve the case in time to save the diamonds and many other lives? While the story is great, it is the writing that makes this book stand out. The language, the grammar, the detail and the humour. Fantastic. I liked this one a little better than the first one even and look forward to the next. Book 29 of 2024! I love this foursome, and the different qualities they bring to solving the mysteries. Elizabeth is such a brilliant character, and as you learn more about her past, the more you want to know her, and her time in MI5. I also enjoy the inclusion of Donna, Bogdan and Chris, as the Murder Club join together after the arrival of Elizabeth’s ex-husband, it extends this world and allows more avenues to be taken . The writing in these books is funny, charming and engaging, and the strength of the characters help keep it together, when the story gets a little far-fetched and chaotic. The change in POVs allow readers to see different characters thoughts on the mystery, and learn more about these characters; Joyce’s diary is a highlight . As with the first, amongst the humour, there are some moments of genuine sweetness and sadness, in particular with Ibrahim’s story. His close friendship with Ron is so lovely, especially as the characters are polar opposites . I’m exciting to see what happens next with the group, in The Bullet That Missed . (Megan reviewing) These books are just the best. I will read every one of them. I am transported into the world where these old ladies and old men with their quirky old people personalities are guiding me through crime solving. I highly recommend the audio books, as it felt like they were all in the car with me. You feel like you know these characters. In the midst of reading this, it was announced that they have cast three of the four main characters for a movie of the first book. Soon, Helen Morten, Ben Kingsley, and Pierce Brosnan will undoubtedly give me another reason to go on and on about these books. Ahh, the Thursday Murder Club. This group of pensioners have really captured my heart over the course of the series. ✨ This 👏🏻 book. 👏🏻 I feel like each book in this series has been better than the last, and The Last Devil To Die perfectly pulled together poignancy with humour, wit with sincerity. The gang is back but you get to know and love them even more. The storyline is a little darker than book one, there are more twists in the plot too, but it’s also so much funnier. I literally laughed out loud multiple times and cannot stop talking to people about it whether they are interested or not. Joyce is one of my favourite characters and I can’t wait to see what she and the others get up to in book 3. I’ve only listened to these books and honestly, Lesley Manville does such an amazing job that I can’t bring myself to read them. Audio is THE way to go with these. I buddy read this with @keepingyouonread and @chicagobooklover and cannot wait for our planned read of book 3, The Bullet That Missed. I’ve read that there is going to be a film adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club. I can’t wait to see who they cast as Joyce. The Thursday Murder Club is very quickly becoming one of my all-time favourite book series! I've just finished The Man Who Died Twice and was absolutely obsessed - a definite 5 star rating from me. Full of mystery, twists and turns, lots of humour and of course our loveable gang. I adore Joyce, Elizabeth, Ron and Ibrahim and cannot wait to see their characters come to life on the big screen. This series is such a comfort for me, and I find myself easily getting lost in the world of Cooper's Chase and all of its inhabitants. Just finished "The Man Who Died Twice" by Richard Osman, and I'm thrilled to give it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars! This book had me hooked from the very first page, and I couldn't have asked for a better read. . Solving murder mysteries while drinking with friends in my golden years? Sign me up! I adored that this book revolved around a group of 80-something year olds – it's a refreshing change from the usual young adult protagonists. Reading about these cool retirees was thrilling to me. . But beyond the fantastic characters, "The Man Who Died Twice" delivered one of the best, twistiest murder mysteries I've encountered in a long time. From start to finish, the plot was expertly crafted, leaving me guessing until the very end. . As a lover of cozy mysteries, this book hit all the right notes for me. The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🔍 Synopsis: the Thursday Murder Club series book 2! This one opens with Elizabeth (former spy) receiving a mysterious letter from a man she knows for certain has died. Upon meeting him, she realizes it to be her ex-husband, Douglas, who was always a bit of a rascal, and former colleague. We find out that Douglas has stolen diamonds that belong to the mafia, which were being held by a notorious gardener and illegal items broker, both of whom are very motivated to retrieve said diamonds. Elizabeth enlists the rest of the Club to join in, and of course, antics ensue. 💎 Review: I almost gave this 4.5 stars but the book is just highly readable and honestly delightful. I did not see any of the twists coming, the chapters are short, and there’s room at the end for more mysteries to come. Thursday Murder Club is digging through old case files when Elizabeth’s ex husband shows up and he has gotten on the wrong side of the mob. The foursome is hunting down killers, teenage hooligans and drug lords, but not without funny misadventures. This cast of characters brings smiles, sadness and mystery all at the same time. The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 23rd Apr to 30th Apr The second instalment of this series follows our Thursday Murder Club investigating stolen diamonds and a double murder, alongside an attack on one of their own. Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first one! I think the plot held my attention more than the first novel as it generally just seemed more interesting to me compared. I also felt like the characters were able to be a lot more developed as a result of this being the second novel, as their previous introductions had been made, therefore their true nature was able to shine a bit more and we got to know them on a deeper level, my favourite being the way Ron cares about Ibrahim and their relationship. I also really loved learning more about Elizabeth’s past work life and the skills she’s managed to hold onto and utilise when in her “peaceful retirement.” Also, the relationship shown with Stephen and Bogdan were some of my favourite moments of the books and Bodgan is quite possibly one of my favourite characters, despite the lack of detail surrounding him as this leads to a lot of mystery and guessing! The humour within these books had me genuinely laughing out loud which is always something I’m impressed by with a book, especially with the way in which it is written it is just so entertaining! Can’t wait for The Thursday Murder Club movie now! I did a version of this a couple of years ago and managed to get one cast member right! Dame Helen of Mirren as Elizabeth. Sir Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim is an inspired choice. Pierce as Ron came out of left field though (although he should be good at spying!). SWIPE ➡️ to see more detail. Two very recent reads. Currently plowing through this series! A fun cast of characters, the second book definitely improves on the first, both in plotting and in character development. The first is good fun but has some rather inconsistent plotting and perhaps tries to do too much. There's a couple of things that really didn't make sense by the end or that just feel inelegant. The second just leans into the silliness though and really finds its feet. Very enjoyable. The second (and third) have made me properly laugh out loud at times, which is just what I need at the moment. Hello everyone, I am back after a while without posting. I am sooo lucky to live near the library and so I borrowed a few books in the past months. I have decided to tell you about four of these books. I have added some wee illustrations on each photo that for me represent the themes of each book. Enjoy! 📚 1 – Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I love Reid’s novels. She always manages to create true to life characters that never fail to move you. Carrie was no exception. A retired tennis champion with a record of Grand Slam Titles she decides to get back to tennis after she sees her rival break her record. She is presented as ruthless and determined but her alienation made her vulnerable and I loved to see another side of her character. Besides I loved how Reid showed how people treated Carrie as a determined and ambitious woman (spoiler: not in a good way…). To sum up, I really enjoyed my reading and it is always a pleasure to read about powerful women (and I learned a lot about tennis).🎾 2 – Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa. This book was so cosy ! The novel follows Takako who moves to her uncle’s bookshop in Jimbocho (known as Tokyo’s centre of second-hand books and publishing houses so it was the perfect setting !) after learning that her boyfriend is marrying someone else. If at first she finds herself estranged from her uncle, they soon discover that they have more in common than they think. There was not a real “plot” in this novel and no action (though I don’t think it was the aim) but I really enjoyed the atmosphere and of course I always love when a book is about books. I have to give another 5 ⭐️’s just for the sheer ingenuity and entertainment. The characters are so genuine and relatable and, again, I found myself absolutely racing through the second half of the book to reach the conclusion. Just like in the first book, I hadn’t guessed the ending which makes such a refreshing addition to a murder mystery! PS - The Ibrahim storyline nearly broke me 😢 Can’t wait to read the third one! ✨Ｑ１ Ｒｅａｄｉｎｇ Ｓｔａｔｓ✨ I’ve seen this doing the rounds and thought it might be interesting to do my own. It looks like I’ve read a lot, but a fair few of these were The Walking Dead graphic novels which I flew through as I’m officially addicted to the series. I thought I DNF’d a book but then realised that was for April, I’m losing track of time 🫠 The split between physical/digital/audio isn’t as balanced as I usually like it - I’m trying hard to get down my physical TBR & I’ve been too busy listening to Taylor Swift to listen to audio books on the way to/from work 😅 I’m pleasantly surprised by how many books I’ve unhauled so far this year, but equally devastated at how many books I’ve acquired, whether that be through book subs, gifts or lack of self control. Definitely need to try and curb my spending habits over the next couple of months 😂 Picking a favourite book is tricky as I’ve been lucky enough to read some incredible books so far this year. If I had to choose, it would be between A Little Life by @hanyayanagihara, which I haven’t stopped thinking about & has haunted me every day since I read it, & Ship of the Stolen Princess by @laurenkayebooks, which is one of the best pirate fantasy books I’ve ever read & has left me hanging for the sequel. 💭What’s been your favourite book so far this year? Wild horses wouldn’t keep her and her Thursday Murder Club members away from it, who may I remind you are living in a retirement village.
