The score to Roman Polanski’s political drama about torture and retribution offers two unique musical contributions: there’s the original chamber music by Franz Schubert with its sharp dramatic shifts, which work perfectly in the film. It’s fitting that this string quartet, which has been described as “the dance of the demon fiddler,” was being played while the lead character, Paulina, was being viciously tortured while blindfolded. The second part of the soundtrack includes the score by Poland’s brilliant composer Wojciech Kilar, and it’s nearly as interesting. His haunting compositions sounds nearly as classical as Schubert’s work, and often intense and heart-pounding. Taken together, these radically different styles actually compliment one another. Review Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time 2010 Blu-ray Rating: 2/5 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a misguided and muddled adaptation of the video game with an overcomplicated storyline and shallow characters. Disney wasn’t the right studio for this film and they clearly had aspirations for this to be another Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s a mess of strong talent with a screenplay that can’t decide what to do with the incredible video game. Filmmaker Mike Newell had just had experience with large budget directing with Harry Potter and you’d assume his selection would add character strength given his background in more dramatic films. Jake Gyllenhaal is serviceable in the lead role but his character arc alongside the story is underdeveloped. Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton share chemistry and this component of the story compliments the source material, but as a romantic love story it doesn’t connect. There’s significant changes to the original game storyline that aren’t improvements and the film would’ve been much different had it left in elements of that story. The story feels bloated at the running time as there’s meaningless support characters introduced to push the story narrative towards a certain sequence. Newell just can’t get the film to a place where the swashbuckler style is engaging and entertaining. The film is miscast and there’s not a strong story. I remember disliking this on release and the years haven’t improved it. There’s no camp value and it’s oftentimes too serious for the tone Newell is working towards. The action sequences are well staged and lighter character moments shine when the story is less focused on forcing its hand. At long last! I finally got to watch Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More” on @netflix and... it’s now my favorite Wes Anderson project to date. A visually and narratively rich collection of shorts that’s one of the best 21st century modern art pieces. I was, once again, completely blown away by Anderson’s artistry and creative freedom. He is one of the greatest filmmakers working today and his eye for shots and designs is unparalleled. No other person on Earth could have made this. This is a singular vision of a true master. Translating @roald_dahl’s incredible text to screen is no easy task and yet Anderson does it so effortlessly while also showcasing some of the most gorgeous images you’ve ever seen. He is at the height of his creative power and delivered something special. His attention to detail is jaw-dropping in every frame, creating painting-esque portraits for 88 *wonderful* minutes. This is one of the creative and inventive films ever made that creates an entirely new visual language. And the cast is just fantastic. Ralph Fiennes, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, and Rupert Friend give incredible performances, reciting entire monologues at insanely fast speeds while being comical and sentimental. A pleasure to see these true thespians at work. But outside of its lavish visuals, incredible performances, and poetic words, the thing in “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More” that pierced me the most was its message to writers and artists to keep going and never stop. As someone who struggled and will continue to struggle as a filmmaker (especially after finally finishing a feature film), it brought tears to my eyes. Just when I thought Wes Anderson delivered his best film with @asteroidcity, he tops himself with this. I’m so happy to have finally seen it on after much delay. Absolutely worth the wait. THE LAST LEGION (2007) A somewhat bland and even awkward tale of Merlin and Arthur but still alright if seen in brain-off mode. At least, it's an okay service to fans of the cast and standard action-adventure films. I don't know about you but Patrick Doyle's orchestral score featuring marvelous choir and a bit of nice middle eastern touches is such a saving grace and also the reason I find the film enjoyable enough. If you love his score for ERAGON and somehow need an appropriately less fantasy and more old-fashioned version of it with two distinctively catchy themes for our heroes (young Caesar and people on his side) and the villains (Goth army), I don't think that experiencing how these things play out in context will be a waste of time. Still, I can understand if someone might just want to skip the film and stick to an impressive album though it isn't a complete score. Junto con Patty Hearst de Paul Schrader y Los Ojos Vendados de Carlos Saura es de las que más acertadamente han retratado los entramados que suelen darse entre rehenes y captores. En un remoto paraje de algún país latinoamericano una mujer espera justicia. Toda la crispación nerviosa de su cuerpo está en relación con ese deseo. Ironía del destino, una noche, su victimario aparecerá en la puerta de su casa. La Muerte y la Doncella no es más opresiva por la concentración de la obra teatral que toma de base, lo es porque al indagar en las razones del odio lo hace con una contundencia telúrica, como si se estuviera batallando entre cuatro paredes un conflicto sempiterno. Incluso el clima, con sus vientos y tormentas, con su mar embravecido dan cuenta de este enfrentamiento, de este olimpo caído en desgracia. La elección del dramaturgo Ariel Dorfman que la dictadura que destruyó la vida de Paulina Escobar no se nombre, y por parte de Polanski, que la película esté hablada en inglés, nos obliga a trascender el contexto y estar mucho más atentos a un proceso de desenmascaramiento. El tipo más ruin necesita exponer la verdadera razón de sus actos, la ética de la víctima no ocultará jamás la tensión eléctrica de un cuerpo violentado, un jurista se mostrará torpe al intentar encontrar soluciones en una vetusta tabla de leyes. Lo que ha sucedido aquí es algo que no tiene perdón, tampoco fronteras ni fin; es doloroso y es personal. El bigote facista del temible Dr. Manuel Miranda, perturba más no porque sea un sello constitutivo al agresor, sino porque eventualmente se lo puede poner cualquiera, ya sea un médico, un militar, un CEO, un revolucionario, una pareja o un amigo. Y por si esto no bastara el duelo actoral entre Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley y Stuart Wilson es simplemente alucinante.

🎥 Collide (2016) 🔽 I always enjoy when action movies decide to change the landscape and choose unusual locations. And that’s the case of Cologne, a touristy city we haven’t seen much on the big screen. And that was the case of “Collide” a mid budget Hollywood film directed by Eran Creevy and set in and around this german city. Filming took place in 2014 and last for almost 3 months. I picked the most scenic places like Hohenzollern Bridge, where the two leads meet (Nicholas Hoult and Felicity Jones) or when they run with a money suitcase next to Cologne Cathedral. The final showdown, where the bad guys are trapped (Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley) is at a real bar called Der Stiefel. A grungy place with graffitis and stickers all over the walls. It’s located in Zülpicher Street and it's hard to miss its colourful building. Unfortunately, Der Stiefel only opened at a later hour so I couldn't get any natural light to go with the photos. A bit unremarkable but it’s alright. 5/10. Thought this came out last year. My first thought was what is Liam Neeson doing in 1970s Ireland? I know he’s Irish but only know him from acting in American movies. Godzilla x Kong was playing in the theatre next door so the theatre was booming and shaking. Made me realize how quiet this movie is. Story feels like it could’ve been more interesting on paper, but the movie itself is forgettable. He’s secretly an assassin for hire, there’s a revolution taking place, a potential love interest, a possible protege, his friend is killed etcetera. There’s wonderful landscape shown, but of course it’s Ireland. I think it’s the best Liam Neeson movie I’ve seen in a while, but that’s not saying much when the last movie of his I saw was retribution. I didn’t really have much to say walking out, just meh.
