We are elated to share that Rosa is celebrating her first Mother's Day without fearing separation from her children for the first time in 6 years thanks to winning her asylum case with help from our legal team, Directing Attorney Cynthia Felix, �Paralegal Cynthia Castro, and Staff Attorney Carson Scott and Brynna Bolt. Rosa, a mother of three, endured prolonged separations from her children due to our broken immigration system after fleeing from her abusive partner. Despite the painful time apart, she never lost hope or faith in the possibility of reunification. The heartache of separation never broke my spirit," Rosa shares. "I knew one day we would be reunited." That day came when Rosa was granted asylum in the United States, thanks to our team of attorneys at ImmDef who fought her asylum case all the way to the Board of Immigration Appeals and beyond. She describes this moment as an outpouring of mixed emotions, filled with gratitude as she finally saw a dignified future ahead in the country that had become her home. She relishes in being able to hug her children again, to guide them and to heal and build the peaceful life she had always envisioned. How CAN two truths both be TRUE? Think about how you can meet your thoughts, emotions, and experiences in the MIDDLE. In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) the TOM skill can be used. TOM stands for THOUGHT - OPPOSITE - MIDDLE. T - THOUGHT: Notice your thought. "I'm a completely burned out caregiver." O - OPPOSITE: Next, what is the complete opposite of that thought? "I'm a caregiver who is healthy and flourishing." M - MIDDLE: Now, move to the middle. "I'm a caregiver, and I'm not taking care of myself." It's important to validate how you FEEL - and then notice what's in your power and control. When I am overwhelmed, I return to this. Words found in Philippians 4. People ask about creeds, mantras, and life verses, and I do have words that I carry with me to remind me of worth and value and hope. But this little chunk of a letter written to some folks in a town called Philippi - it helps me to hold on to the God who is steadfast in love and grace and mercy. Staedfastness is long-haul courage. It is quiet confidence. And the God of the universe has quiet confidence in me - and invites me to have take courage too - courage in prayer, courage in thought, courage in action, courage in love. He is steadfast so I can be steadfast. He is present so I may remain present no matter what the days may bring. He is here. Always. Keep your gentle nature so that all people will know what it looks like to walk in His footsteps. The Lord is ever present with us. Don’t be anxious about things; instead, pray. Pray about everything. He longs to hear your requests, so talk to God about your needs and be thankful for what has come. And know that the peace of God (a peace that is beyond any and all of our human understanding) will stand watch over your hearts and minds in Jesus, the Anointed One. Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy. We're in this together, and I hope this brings encouragement to you today. xoxo
