It not only features a star-studded cast (Pam Grier, Bridget Fonda, Samuel L. Jackson and Robert de Niro) but also a banging soundtrack, paying homage to lots of classic soul, funk and R&B singers. I used to listen to this album while working my paper route in my teens, and it introduced me to some classic soul songs I can still sing along too, like Across 110th Street (Womack), Who is He by the impeccable Bill Withers and the sensual Inside my Love (Riperton). What's singing without some dancing. Who can stay seated when Strawberry Letter 23 or Street Life blast through the speakers? Or how about the abstract collage of Monte Carlo Nights (Easton's) and The Lions and the Cucumber (Vampire Sound Inc.) Quentin also delivers some deeper cuts like Letter to the Firm by Foxy Brown, delivered with such an attitude that it still radiates confidence almost 20 years later. Pam Grier shines not only as an actress, but also as a singer in Long Time Woman, one of few recordings under her name. A song that got stuck in my head only a couple days ago was Tennessee Stud by Johnny Cash, even country is present on this one. A classic Walter Hill film that would certainly never get made today, the highlight of the record is - without a doubt - the Joe Walsh anthem "In The City." Joe was born in Kansas and his dad died before he was two. He moved to NYC when he was twelve. He was at Kent State when the shit went down in 1970. The score to Roman Polanski’s political drama about torture and retribution offers two unique musical contributions: there’s the original chamber music by Franz Schubert with its sharp dramatic shifts, which work perfectly in the film. It’s fitting that this string quartet, which has been described as “the dance of the demon fiddler,” was being played while the lead character, Paulina, was being viciously tortured while blindfolded. The second part of the soundtrack includes the score by Poland’s brilliant composer Wojciech Kilar, and it’s nearly as interesting. Amélie was the kindling, Marie Antoinette the torch, and Anna Karenina was the oxygen that spread the flame to every corner of my existence. The fact that Anna Karenina is not more widely praised breaks my heart into a million little pieces. Sure, there have been many adaptations of the Russian classic by Leo Tolstoy, but none so immersive and imaginative as Joe Wright’s 2012 adaptation. I remember how mesmerized I was as line between stage play and real life was blurred, making for phenomenal and thought provoking cinematography. The choreographed and rhythmic movements and transitions lured me into the world of Anna Karenina. It was a breath of fresh air into what was a previously beaten to death adaptation, visually incomparable to nothing else before or since. The only thing more encompassing than Anna Karenina’s cinematography and set design was its musical scores that transport you on an epic journey through 19th century Russia and one of the greatest love affairs ever committed to screen. It’s a mélange of wistful desire, passionate sin, and an explosion of life. Just like with the soundtrack from Marie Antoinette, I find myself turning to Anna Karenina’s soundtrack regularly throughout the past 12 years as a cathartic release, especially the trailer’s feature score “Nero” by Two Steps from Hell, which I have played approximately 8,000 times without exaggeration. You may have noticed a Parisian pattern with the first two films that have impacted my life, but notably Anna Karenina has no ties to France… or does it? Well, for me, it actually does. Its release date occurred a mere month before my third trip to Paris and was fresh in my mind, occupying my daily thoughts. I downloaded all the scores from the movie to my ipod nano and it was the soundtrack, along with Florence and the Machine, to my winter holiday in the city of love. Now, when I listen to it, memories of a past life conjure up... a past life that made me who I am today—a curious traveler and performer who adores history and the arts with a constant fascination of the human experience in all its forms. The second film and soundtrack to have a meteoric impact on me was Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. I owe this film in its entirety for influencing the majority of my life decisions since its release. If Amélie was the kindling, Marie Antoinette was the torch that set everything ablaze in my life. I took an obsessive interest from that point on in French history, ultimately writing my high school thesis on the French Revolution and minoring in French studies in college. My affinity for the French then led me to celebrate my sixteenth birthday visiting my cousin in Paris, followed by two more trips to Paris in subsequent years, thus putting forth into motion my endless international travels and curiosity. Most importantly, Kirsten Dunst’s performance as Marie Antoinette was the penultimate inspiration for me to pursue acting. My desire to time travel and embody lives so very different from my own, even if it were contained to a stage or in front of a camera lens, took form. For others, Marie Antoinette was not as remarkable of a film, but it would hard to deny the masterpiece that is its soundtrack. Each of songs and scores are universally relatable as they express love, lust, triumph, devastation, melancholy, frivolity of youth…. I found myself turning to the soundtrack when I could not find the words to express or process my emotions in my adolescence and, honestly, even in my adulthood. Sophia Coppola set off to portray one of the most controversial figures in French history as a relatable teenager and succeeded. I then learned the greatest gift cinema can offer is not mere entertainment, but the ability to show other side of the story and approach characters with empathy that they may not have been given in this world. In an attempt to revive my waning passion for the cinema, I am commencing a series of posts where I revisit in depth the movies that ignited my desire to be in film and that have each in their own way left a mark on me and my character today. Let’s begin with my favorite film soundtracks that have worked their way into my lives years (and, in some cases, even decades) later. In reality, they never left me. There are good movies and there are good soundtracks, and occasionally they happen to coincide. The first movie soundtrack, in my opinion, to do so is Amélie. As a child with a massive crush on Orlando Bloom, I discovered in a magazine article that his favorite movie was Amélie. I rushed to Blockbuster to rent the French foreign film that Bloom deemed his favorite. The plot was… intriguing… yet it was difficult to fully comprehend given my age. What clicked was Amélie’s soundtrack. Every song and every note was felt by every fiber of my young body. Nice little birthday gift in the form of the 8 Mile Soundtrack! 8 Mile was a 2002 drama directed by the great Curtis Hanson and starred Hip hop legend Eminem in his movie debut. The film follows a Detroit rapper trying to get a break in the world of hip hop music despite having a tough environment around him. As you can imagine the soundtrack to this movie is pretty much as hip hop as it gets. Eminem contributes numerous tracks including his massive hit single 'lose yourself' which is still my favourite track of Eminem's to this day. I’ve been thinking about reducing my equipment to the minimum amount of pieces I actually need to make music. I know the laptop should be more than enough but I still need pads and knobs to have fun :) The first step was to clean up the desk leaving only the laptop, the 404mk2 and the Komplete Kontrol keyboard to try and work with this setup for a while. Now the 404 is my audio interface, where I can plug both the mic and and the guitar when needed. Looking at the numbers of my past videos reducing the amount of 2000XL videos from my content is not going to be the best move for my reach, but I really need to remove distractions from my process :) If you’ve been where I am now and you managed to minimize your set up I will be really happy to have your input about this process process.
