Hacked, sawn, dismembered and discarded. Nothing but anthropogenic garbage. Suffocation is a five-piece Brutal Death Metal band based out of Long Island, New York. Formed in 1988, this long-standing stalwart of the Metal underground strutted into view, knuckles bloodied and littered with tooth shrapnel, as it began to uproot and decimate music as we once knew it. After one demo and one split, this misanthropic throat-cutter grabbed its cleaver and latex gloves, as it premeditated another mass killing in the name of primeval hatred. This is their debut EP entitled ‘Human Waste’, released in October 1991 through Relapse Records. This is the aural equivalent of being slowly run over by a tank, crushing your zygomatic arches and mandible, as your eyeballs fight to remain within your orbitals. Introducing the world to the more obliterative side of the Death Metal sub-genre whether it wanted it or not, this is an inhuman audial genocide of catastrophic proportions, brutalising your eardrums with low, chugging rhythms and unrelenting drum work. Frank Mullen’s iconic guttural grunts and growls are regurgitated onto the winding guitar passages like a blood smear on a racetrack, highlighting the incomprehensible instrumental savagery on display. The songwriting is executed in such a way that each track sticks in your brain like stray bullet shrapnel, instating themselves as unforgettable classics from the very first note. Whatever... they are 7". 'Coffy' is one of the truly great blaxsploitation soundtracks. Roy Ayers was on top form. Lashings of funk, jazz, soul, and obviously vibes. The album was released in 1973. It reached no.31 in the US jazz charts. No singles were released from the album.
