Though Beatty bemoans the comparison of every black artistic practice to that of jazz, it seems quite clear that many of his rhythms in The Sellout owe at least some debt to the structure of jazz poetics. Rhythms in prose are different and perhaps less programmatic than poetry. As such, I won’t claim that Beatty is writing jazz poetry, but I still think it’s interesting to see how he incorporates a staple of jazz rhythm, syncopation, into his fiction. Syncopation works by stressing the notes on the upbeat or otherwise in unexpected places in the rhythm. Many of Beatty’s sentences skate along with the vigour of a jazz drum solo, often with tightly packed, popping plosives. These short bursts of percussive syllables accent the sentences and gives these passages a scattered, energetic flourish; you can almost tap your finger along with some of these lines. To take two of the shorter examples, if we imagine certain syllables as accents on the beat, then the Ds in “doo-wop bass deep” and the Ps in “black people pop” do not fall neatly onto the ordinary up/down, stressed/unstressed pattern, and are instead “jazzier”. This is not a completely perfect, one-to-one match, nor does it mean that everyone who uses these structures and rhythms is indebted specifically to jazz (Beatty is also clearly influenced by David Foster Wallace). However, I think Beatty’s use of it here is fascinating, effective and defiantly poignant; a book about race and racism in America told through the rhythms of a uniquely (black) American art form, a style of music considered by many to be “America’s gift to the world”.

Really dope Australian jazz recorded back in 2014/15 and released in 2016 on Growing Bin Records. The vinyl is two about 10 minute long tracks with notes of library music and exotica in the spirit of Cortex, Alan Hawkshawk and Leon Lowman. A soulful sound with syncopated stabs and hits, free flowing bass and trippy Rhodes organs. To bad the 12” is so short, but at least what is there is really really dope! Here’s some cheap heat that honestly is a solid listen. I’ve never had an issue with Art Farmer, always being quite satisfied with what I hear. To Duke With Love is no exception. It’s Farmer’s tribute to Duke Ellington. Very well recorded. Amazing backing from Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins. What caught my eye here was that this Inner City release was licensed from East Wind in Japan. Any J Jazz listener will be familiar with East Wind. Great label with well pressed recordings. Originally recorded and released in 1975, this US Inner City pressing is from 1978/79 and appears to be the last vinyl pressing. Well worth seeking out or if you stumble across it like I did. If you dig Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn tunes, this may be for you. Jackie McLean - Swing, Swang, Swingin' (1960) In terms of Blue Note, I noticed that I have been on a diet of Lee Morgan/Jackie McLean/Donald Byrd/Hank Mobley lately. Somehow the records that make it to the turntable have at least one of them on it. Of all Blue Notes issued between '58 and'68, would the majority have at least one of them present? Might be. Jackie McLean is by far my favourite alto at the moment, perhaps even my favourite sax player period. Never get tired of hearing him and the good thing is that the progression that he made, from Bop to Avant-garde, give us a wider range of styles to choose from. This is early on the Blue Note career of McLean, still bopping hard although the difference between this and the earlier Prestige records can be heard. The Blue Note preparation against the rushed Prestige sessions perhaps. Jackie blowes his way through a number of standards, some taken in high speed. Comfort zone? Perhaps, but I wish the comfort zone of others was as good as this. Walter Bishop made his return in 1959 after being dormant for a few years. No hint of this in his support and his solos, sounding really good too! Offtopic! A 63 años de su primera edición, hoy más vigente que nunca B.a. Jazz by López Ruíz. Repasamos algunos detalles : En la portada no aparece el sello de la primera edición ya que la misma nunca podría ser reeditada por la desaparecida Rca, por ende, el label es diferente también, además se trata de la primera reedición oficial desde su lanzamiento en 1961. En cuanto a sonido: la zona muerta (Deadwax) es bastante notoria, como lo es, por ejemplo, en la reedicion de JLR Interpreta, pero no parece en absoluto ser comprimido y las diferencias son nulas, ya que la masterizacion es perfecta! En resumen, la labor sobre esta edición es sumamente profesional que merecía estar a la altura de semejante obra maestra del Jazz Nacional! OG pressing of “Street Lady” by Donald Byrd released on Blue Note Records in 1973. Could it be? Another jazz funk album? A great one though - produced by Mizell brothers. Sounds different from everything else he’d recorded before and different from what would follow with the Blackbyrds. The title track is one of the funkiest ever laid down on a Blue Note record. Highly recommended. The Believer, an album by Billy Harper, recorded in 1980 at Power Station Studios NYC, and released in the same year on Japanese label, Baystate. Billy Harper accompanied by bassist Greg Maker, and Malcolm Pinson on drums, Armen Donelian on piano, and Everett Hollins on trumpet in this session. What can I say about the music, it is beautiful, with Coltrane-esque on his playing but still uniquely as his own, Billy Harper really stand out, he always be one of my favourite tenor man, the opening track for almost 20 minutes, started with the drums and the rest is followed, “Is Not True, Simply Because You Cannot Believe it?” As the title, a mix of post bop and spiritual jazz. On the side 2 , the two tracks, “I do Believe” and “ “Believe, For it is True” with the first one quite short only 4 and half minutes, but the last track is really solid, again Billy Harper really great with his solo, and Everett Hollins shows his fantastic solo as well, bit remind me of Lee Morgan.
