“Rich girls don’t marry poor boys!” This is the version I grew up with, and as you can see it’s a bit beat up from being carried around in my backpack in the 10th grade when we read the book which I loved. Jack Clayton’s film (from a script by Francis Ford Coppola) is probably truer to the way everyone behaved and partied in the 1920s. It has a powerhouse cast (Redford seems like he doesn’t want to be there for some reason), especially Bruce Dern who really brings all the levels required to Tom so we can understand why Daisy still loves him and stays with him (looking at you Joel Edgerton in the remake 🤨). It’s a far more passive film compared to Baz Luhrmanns version, and can probably be safely called the defenitive film version. I’ve asked Kathryn Leigh Scott who plays Karen Black’s sister in the film what was it like working with Jack Clayton, and she’s told me some interesting stories about the making of the film (she admired Clayton tho). Leonardo Dicaprio as Jay Gatsby in "The Great Gastby" (2013) Costume Designer: Catherine Martin Director: Baz Luhrmann Catherine Martin worked on Luhrmann's "The Great Gastby" as both art director and costume designer and did an extraordinary job in bringing the excitement and extravagance of F. Scott Fitzgerald's New York in the 1920s. She had the assistance of Miuccia Prada for the women's costumes and Brooks Brothers for the men's including the fashionable Jay Gatsby. Brooks Brothers have been dressing American gentlemen since the 19th century, and it is referenced in Fitzgerald's book, making it the most obvious choice to fill in for the job. Catherine Martin designed all of male wardrobe and the brand provided a total of 1,200 suits. In 2013 when slim and skinny were trending, it was obvious to go for the early 1920's slimmer silhouette for inspiration to the Gatsby's perfectly tailored suits. The colors and fabrics of choice were inspired in the book descriptions, and give us immediate clues that the mysterious Gatsby is probably nouveau rich, free from the dressing rules of the victorian and edwardian fashions, being fashion foward and an icon, just like his lengedary parties. The story takes place in the summer time and so, linen suits, straw boaters and light colors are frequent in Gatsby's wardrobe. One of the most important fashion moments in both book and movie adaptations is Gatsby pink suit. It shows Gatsby flamboyance, romantic side and it was the main clue to Tom Buchanan that Gatsby was not the old money Oxford man everyone painted. It is my favorite suit Leo wears in the movie and my favorite version of it comparing to other adaptations. Looking through Brooks Brothers archieves, Catherine Martin found that they have been making pink suits since late 19th century, and gathered inspiration from those archival designs. It was important that Gatsby didn't look like a caricature and mantained the gentleman image, and the pinstriped pattern worked so well to achieve that. I specially love the colors of the tie and pocket square.

Yet it’s almost a reflex to add even more books to your TBR when you stumble upon book recommendation after book recommendation from your trusted sources. It is a disease. It is a guilty pleasure. However you would like to call it, it’s slowly creeping up on your conscience – something must be done. As I was telling @whatleviathanreads last week, all you have to do is think of me. Among the books I capture here, I have only read A Moveable Feast. That says something about the ratio of read versus unread books on my shelf. I have 800 books on my to-buy list, and another 200 to 300 on my Kindle wishlist. Incorrigible. Unhinged. A walking joke that is @ofbookishbondage whose ridiculousness, hopefully, brings you a peace of mind. I vow to do better. I will start with A Room of One’s Own, that is obviously already in my possession, as prompted by the recent, brilliant reviews of @moietmeslivrress @whatleviathanreads P. S. Books were one the many things that there was a backlog of in 2021. As I began adding books to the previously bare bookshelves I was also reading voraciously and sharing some of what I read on Facebook. And so... Sunday Book Club: F. Scott Fitzgerald - 'The Great Gatsby' (1925) F Scott Fitzgerald's intricate and beautifully written novel is set in 1920s Long Island. It chronicles Nick Carraway's interactions with his enigmatic millionaire neighbour, Jay Gatsby, and the latter's obsession to reunite with the woman he loves, the now-married Daisy Buchanan. The novel contianed autobiographical elements from Fitzgerald's own life but was a relative commercial failure in his lifetime. It was only following his death in 1940 that the novel began to be reappraised, leading it to become one of the classics of American literature. The book also gave rise to three major film adaptations, most recently in 2013, with Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby - which, having read the book, I can now watch! Sometimes though, with certain books, I am just thrilled by the sheer beauty and gorgeousness of the writing, like this description of Daisy Buchanan... ❤ 'It was the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down, as if each speech is an arrangement of notes that will never be played again. The F.Scott Fitzgeralds were an interesting literary couple. Their lifestyle defined the Jazz Age of the 1920s. Idle, indulgent and crazy. They partied night and day to forget the horrors of The Great War. Fitzgerald’s first book this Side of Paradise was a great success so they lived it up. But his next three books fell flat and money troubles set in. Zelda had mental problems and Francis( that is what the F. stands for) had drink problems. He bacame despondent when even his third novel The Great Gatsby had a poor response. He had high hopes for this his literary masterpiece. Francis and Zelda died young and poor in their forties before his books became popular. Now, The Great Gatsby is viewed as one of the great American novels. It is one of my favourite books. The writing style is full of symbolism and beautiful imagery. Baz Luhrmann’s THE GREAT GATSBY is one of my favorite movies. It’s decadent and I love the way it communicates the story. Written so beautifully and vividly, you follow the story of Jay Gatsby through the eyes of Nick, who has moved next door to the glamorous Great Gatsby. It always hits me how sad Jay’s story is and without spoiling the ending how tragic he becomes. A hauntingly beautiful book, highlighting the roaring 20’s and life after the First World War, that I believe everyone should read at least once in their lives. Have you read The Great Gatsby?
