Perhaps doing a school visit on the last afternoon before half term wasn’t my best idea, as the pupils at Hillview Primary School today were all clearly as ready for a week off as I was! But rather than appearing tired and lethargic (like me today), they all seemed extremely lively and boisterous! If only I could have siphoned off some of their energy! I could certainly do with it for all the store events I have coming up. Despite the fact that half term was well and truly on everyone’s minds, the children still seemed to really enjoy my assembly and the activity sessions that followed it. And so many of them presented me with their artwork to take home, which almost reduced me to tears. It’s certainly been an emotional few weeks since my book was published on April 30th, and I’m sure the roller coaster of emotions will continue now that I’ve booked visits for June and July. I still have to pinch myself every day when I realise how much my life has changed in a just a few short weeks. I feel so privileged to be able to visit schools and share my passion for reading and writing with so many young and talented children every day. Thank you, staff and pupils, for your full and eager participation during my visit. And to Emilia (Emelia?), I’m so sorry I messed your name up whilst signing your book earlier. I hope that an advanced copy of my next one will make up for it, and I promise I won’t spell your name wrong a second time. (Like a have done once before with another pupil, whoops!) Thank you, pupils and staff of Birdlip Primary, for another great day… and for squeezing all of KS2 into one classroom this morning. I loved hearing your sniggers and giggles whilst I was reading aloud, as it let me know you were enjoying my story. And I’m thrilled so many of you now want to read the rest of the book! Having done so many whole-day school visits recently, I found today’s visit was over far too soon, though! Next year, perhaps I’ll be able to spend more time with you all and put on some of my activities throughout the day. Your suggestions of what selfless things you’d do if you had magical powers really warmed my heart. I sincerely hope you do find magic at your fingertips one day, and manage to put an end to world hunger and plastic pollution (whilst resisting the urge to evaporate your sisters, of course)! And it seems your teachers are a huge hit with you all because you wouldn’t use magic to do ANYTHING naughty to them… I’m impressed!!! It’s with a heavy heart that I announce I’ll no longer be providing #free popcorn for pupils during my school visits (after Thursday). It’s not a decision I’ve taken lightly - given that the mere mention of free popcorn has been received with shrieks of joy in assemblies, and the popcorn itself has been devoured in split seconds in playgrounds at the end of the school day. But for the sake of my sanity… and the future long-term health of my popcorn maker… this decision has had to be made. (The 395 packs I had to pop last night was simply a pop too far!) Stickers and bookmarks will still be free for all pupils going forwards. But popcorn, sadly, is now off the table. Today, I was at Finlay Community School in Gloucester, doing what I love – spreading the joy of reading and writing. And the pupils very kindly all wore purple, to match my book cover! How cool is that?! I don’t think I’ll ever tire of visiting schools and spending time with enthusiastic children who get stuck into all the activities I put on, ask countless interesting questions, and have such wonderful imaginations that I know there’s a least one book inside each and every one of them… waiting to get out. The sheer speed at which these children can create stories, design book covers, and produce beautiful written work and artwork still amazes me. If my old brain worked at even a tenth of the speed their young brains operate at, I’d have book three written in no time! Thank you, pupils and teachers of Finlay Community School, for another day filled with fun, laughter, inspiration, and silliness. Wow, what a day! I wouldn’t recommend following a KS2 assembly with EIGHT thirty-minute classroom visits… all in one day! But I can’t deny that as tired as I am now, I’d still do it all over again tomorrow (if I didn’t have another school visit already booked). The pupils and staff at Linden Primary were a super audience, and they filled the day with so much fun that it was over in a flash. The poor Year 6 pupils were clearly still worn out after sitting their SATS last week, as a lot of their stories ended in death and destruction – but you can’t really blame them. The ’Design a Book Cover’ challenge was a firm favourite out of all the activities I put on. And there were some wonderful ideas for future books I should write in the Words of Warning series. With today’s visit being my tenth since the book was published on April 30th, I’d imagined myself finding things becoming a little repetitive by now. But that’s certainly not the case. Each visit is so different to the last – with the only real common ground being how many pupils comment on my earrings and necklace that match the book cover! (I think quite a few of them would like a set for themselves.) Knowing that so many children local to me now own a copy of my book, and might be tucked up in bed tonight reading it, fills me with so much joy. I know that many of the teachers at Linden today were concerned that reading for pleasure seems to have lost its charm – due to the advances in technology over recent years. But personally, I think there’s nothing better than losing yourself in a story. So, my mission is to encourage more children to pick up a book. And even if I can only persuade a small handful to do so at each school that I visit, I’ll take that as a win. Thank you to everyone at Linden Primary for an incredible day! It was an absolute privilege to spend the whole of today at Brookthorpe Hall School – a specialist school in Gloucester for autistic young people. I’m beginning to realise that there’s so much more to being an author than just writing and selling books. A whole new world of opportunities has suddenly opened up to me, and I can’t believe my luck! My school visits are always so varied, but today’s visit was entirely different to any I’ve done before. Each of the five sessions I put on was with a small handful of pupils, making for a much more personal experience. And in one of them I got to spend a chunk of one-on-one time with a pupil who, to my delight, wore magical fancy dress!!! I’d expected there to be far less two-way interaction during this visit, but that wasn’t the case at all. So many of the young people were participative in the activities - and lots of those initially reluctant to join in eventually became intrigued and got involved. It’s been fantastic to try out all of my School Pack activities today, to see how they work in practice and which ones need tweaking for future visits. And coming away with photos of some of the masterpieces that were created was the icing on the cake!!! Thank you, Emma and the staff, for inviting me to your incredible school and making me feel so at home. And thank you to all the pupils for accepting a stranger into your midst and providing me with memories I’ll treasure forever. I hope to return to Brookthorpe Hall with my second book in the series next spring. So, I look forward to seeing you all again then. Oh… and it was a real treat receiving a #free cooked lunch - spaghetti Bolognese – which was delicious without Uncle John’s compulsory huge dollop of mashed potato on top! Seeing my children’s book in the library of my old grammar school, @ccgrammarschoolramsgate, is a dream come true. And yes, it may be a little young for secondary school pupils, but I hear it went down rather well in a Year 7 English class the other day! School visit number 7 was to St Paul’s C of E Primary in Gloucester, where many of the children liked the idea of turning their sister into a spider and washing her down the plughole! (Don’t worry, I won’t tell your sisters.) Thank you to all the pupils and staff for being an incredible audience. You were far more alert and engaged than I expected you to be on a Friday afternoon just before home time. There was a real buzz in the hall from the moment you all entered until the moment you left. And as your head teacher said, if your dream is to become an author, then remember it takes time and dedication. Sadly, a book doesn’t write itself overnight - I wish it did! But follow your dream, and never give up. As I have no doubt in my mind that one day, I’ll see books by many of you in bookshops up and down the country. Keep reading and writing. Another school visit in the glorious sunshine. Today I spent the afternoon at Withington C of E Primary School and Foundation Unit – but I almost didn’t! With a closed main road determined to keep me from getting there in time, and satnav continually looping me back to that very same closed road, I was fearful of never making it there. Fortunately, I arrived in the nick of time, and cosied up with the whole school in one classroom. With pupils’ ages ranging from 3 (I think) to 11, it was very different to any visit I’ve done before. But as always, there were so many fantastic questions and plenty of interaction and giggles. I particularly liked some of the ideas the pupils had about what THEY’D do if they had magic at their fingertips – especially turning the whole world into jam! My top tip for school visits? Don’t turn up at the wrong school!!! That’s what I did today before quickly realising I was still half a mile away from my INTENDED destination according to satnav. Thank you, pupils and teachers of Churchdown Village Junior School, for being such an amazing audience. And WOW, were you loud!?! Lol. The excitement was infectious, I had such a giggle with you all. There certainly seems to be a recurring theme with all my school visits, though… one of the teachers always seems to get ridiculed during our character name game. I take full blame, of course. Both for that and for suggesting that if the pupils had magical powers, they might like to consider disappearing all of their teachers. (Something every single pupil seemed to like the idea of.) I must admit, I feel physically wiped out after every school visit I do - I’m getting old - but I feel so buzzed up, too. They’re exhilarating. It’s lovely interacting individually with all the pupils at the end of the school day, too. (Although, I’m a little disappointed I didn’t get to join in with roller skating after-school club.) And suffice it to say that the popcorn was a huge hit!!! Today’s school visit was to the tiny village of Tredington. With fewer than 40 pupils in Years 3-6, the assembly felt lovely and cosy. Again, I was amazed at how participative everyone was. And I can’t thank the pupils enough their engagement, their questions, oh... and for not laughing too much when I tripped over the stool! It was a real treat to be able to follow the assembly with classroom visits, too. And I was amazed at the book cover designs, blurbs, and opening sentences that everyone magically created in front of my eyes. (Photos to follow soon, hopefully.) I’ve been so nervous about my first school visit. But the pupils at Dinglewell Junior today were so engaged and receptive for the whole time I was there. It was actually quite overwhelming how much they got involved. There were so many hands up in the air and numerous questions and fun comments meaning the time flew by. I wish I could have stayed for longer. For any authors nervous about doing school visits… don’t be! This first visit has given me so much more confidence, and I can’t wait for the next one tomorrow. It was a big group today, too - 270 pupils during an hour-long assembly. Which was a great way to start because it really threw me in at the deep end but also meant there was lots of pupil interaction to tap into. So much fun! The only downside was that I totally forgot to take any photos!!! And Dinglewell, thank you so much for having me.
