In 1994, the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) was born. The NWFP was the first - and remains the only - landscape-level, ecosystem protection plan. Its boundaries span both slopes of the Cascade mountains, from the border of Canada nearly all the way to the Bay Area of California. Now, this historic plan is undergoing an amendment by the United States Forest Service that addresses 5 key areas defined by the agency: old-growth, climate change, wildfires, rural communities, and tribal inclusion. Come join us to learn more about the Northwest Forest Plan and how you can make your voice heard during the amendment process. We are hosting a 30 minutes workshop, following by a tree tour that would last around an hour Wednesday, May 29th, 4:30pm-6:30pm, meet at Hub Lawn Refreshments will be provided Registration link in Bio! 4:30pm - 5:00pm Workshop on old grown, forest policies and Northwest Forest Plan 5:00pm 6:30pm Campus tree tour #seattle #seattletrees #urbanforest #garden #garryoak #oregonwhiteoak #quercusgarryana #seattlestreettrees #universityofwashington #restoration #seattletreecanopy #droughttolerant #climatechange #treetour #brockmanmemorialtreetour #campustreetour #uw #universityofwashington #uwhuskies #sefs #nativetrees #washingtonnativeplants #uwbotanicgardens #naturewalk #interpretivewalk

First Oak Gall sighting of spring! Fun fact: Oak Galls can be used to make writing ink. The Declaration of Independence was written in ink made by oak galls. How does a gall form? A Cynipid Gall Wasp injects eggs into oak tissue. Along with eggs a hormone is released by the wasp into the oak tissue. The oak responds by producing galls that surround the egg. There are 1000 species of cynipid gallers, producing a variety of shaped oak galls. Generally eggs are laid in April, by fall the eggs have matured from larvae to cynipid gall wasps. To depart the gall they eat a hole in the gall. Please leave oak galls alone until you see exit holes. Good news, cynipid wasps are not stinging wasps. And even better news, galls to do not harm trees. #mosieroaks #mosier #quercus #quercusgarryana #oregonwhiteoak #oregonwhiteoaks #pnwtrees #oregontrees #habitat #oakhabitat #hoodgorge #oregon #eastcascades #columbiagorgeous #treesforwildlife #oakconservation #oak #oaks #trees #pnwnativetrees

There's now a bright blue focal point at the end of the path that leads through the trellis, passed my vegetable garden, and into my backyard habitat. I've planted a small Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana var. garryana) in the pot as a way to add a large, keystone tree to my small space. I'm experimenting with growing this slow-growing native species in a pot after being inspired by a neighbor's bonsai projects. Even a small oak can add habitat, and Oregon white oak is my favorite tree species. My backyard habitat is less than three years old, and I'm working to create a private oasis where my neighbors' homes will eventually be hidden from view by my young pocket forest. 1. The Orange honeysuckle (Lonicera ciliosa) climbing the trellis is about six-feet tall in its third year, but it hasn't bloomed yet. I have a vision of orange flowers and happy hummingbirds in the future. 2. A view of the path leading to my tiny shade garden with Pacific bleeding heart (Dicentra formosa ssp. formosa) in bloom, Northern maidenhair fern (Adiantum aleuticum), and other shade-loving native species. 3. A closeup of the Oregon white oak. The green leaves blend into the green of the Nootka rose (Rosa nutkana var. nutkana) and the other native species in the sunny, dry portion of my pocket forest. #backyardhabitat #oregonwhiteoak #quercusgarryana #keystonespecies #pottedplants #treeinapot #bluepottery #pocketforest #homegrownnationalpark #nativeoregontrees #pnwtrees #plantnative #trellis #focalpoint #createhabitat

Oregon White Oak (Quercus garryana) is my favorite tree. I picked up this one at the Sparrowhawk flash sale on Saturday. It called to me, you might say. I have a small backyard habitat (half city lot), so there's no room to plant it in the ground. However, I've read about people keeping them in pots or turning them into bonsai. If you are someone who's done this, I'd like to hear from you. . . . #oregonwhiteoak #quercusgarryana #oakinapot #backyardhabitat #portlandplantlist #homegrownnationalpark #nativeoregontrees #pnwplants #treeinapot #plantnative

Mosier Spring Wildfire Townhall this Saturday, March 30, hosted by the Mosier Fire District for residents of the district. Details: 9am-1pm in the Mosier Grange. This is a great opportunity to learn how to keep yourself, home and property safe during wildfire season. Plus Q/A with experts from several agencies. Plus…donuts. To add some oak content in: White oak trees are fire adapted. An example is photo 2, taken last year in the Mosier Creek Fire burn area. The oak on the left survived, the fir on the right was toast. If the fire is super intense oaks will burn. Should they burn, their deep and extensive root systems survive and send up tree shoots in the following years. They also tend to be a low ember producing tree, which is critical in our windy region. #mosieroaks #mosier #quercus #quercusgarryana #oregonwhiteoak #oregonwhiteoaks #pnwtrees #oregontrees #habitat #oakhabitat #hoodgorge #oregon #eastcascades #columbiagorgeous #treesforwildlife #oakconservation #oak #oaks #trees #pnwnativetrees #mosierfire

Oaks toothwort (Cardamine nuttallii), also known as slender toothwort, is one of many native wildflowers that grow in Oregon white oak woodlands and benefit from the habitat created by oak trees. In the Eastern Columbia River Gorge and eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Oregon white oaks tend to leaf out later than other deciduous trees, thus providing woodland wildflowers access to nourishing spring sunshine and yet protection from the harsh summer sun. A huge advantage to ephemeral wildflowers like the toothwort, which will set seed and go dormant by summer, avoiding the desiccating heat of summer yet taking advantage of spring moisture and sunshine to bloom, produce seed, and create energy to store in its rhizomatous roots. Oaks toothwort is a beautiful perennial that looks dainty but is actually quite tough. The first picture was taken in a pine-oak-fir woodland the year after the Mosier Creek fire. The fire burned the forest, but the toothwort survived, regrowing the next spring from roots that had been dormant and remained protected in the soil while the fire burned. Oaks toothwort flowers are a welcome source of food for early season pollinators. It also boasts rather cute, deeply lobed basal leaves. Check out the second photo to see a few of these basal leaves emerging among oak leaves before the flowering stalks appear. With the beautiful, warmer weather happening this week these sweet and colorful native wildflowers will be putting out blooms soon, marking the beginning of the bloom parade of wildflowers that thrive in Mosier’s oak habitats! Keep an eye out for them! Acorn lottery part 2: Today went searching for more acorns expressing their tap root. This past year was a mast year (lots of acorns), and quickly found over 60 and planted them this afternoon. A few already had tap roots 2-3” long. Hunting for acorns ready to plant is a fun activity for kids and adults. Planting directly into the ground is easy, dig ½”-1” hole, place acorn on its side with tap root pointing down, then cover with soil. If you want to plant into a container, make sure it is deep, 10” plus, to accommodate the depth seeking tap root. #mosieroaks #mosier #quercus #quercusgarryana #oregonwhiteoak #oregonwhiteoaks #pnwtrees #oregontrees #habitat #oakhabitat #hoodgorge #oregon #eastcascades #columbiagorgeous #treesforwildlife #oakconservation #oak #oaks #trees #pnwnativetrees

On the shoreline of the Salish Sea near Bellingham is a remnant population of Oregon White Oak, the only species of oak native to Washington and British Columbia. Once far more widespread, this species has experienced a reduction in range due to the loss of Indigenous fire practices and heavy human development in the lowlands of the state. But good news!!!! These trees have great potential to thrive in a city environment! As a drought tolerant species, Quercus garryana makes an excellent choice for a planting in Seattle even with warmer summers upon us! Message us for a free sapling to help restore this wonderful species, it's cool summer shade, and edible acorns! We also have dozens of young northern red oaks for anyone interested in an Eastern flare! These trees are slow growers and won't take up much space for decades, if you aren't quite sure about a new tree at your place, consider going out on a limb with one of these (pun intended)!!!!! Acorn lottery today! Found these three lying somewhat together on the ground. With their tap root sprouting it is time to get them buried into soil. The trio will be planted in an area heavily burned by the 2020 Mosier Creek Fire. That area was once an oak forest, but fir tree overtopping had decimated most of the oaks long before the fire. The fire has given us the opportunity to attempt to restore the white oaks, and hopefully these three will be part of that! Method of planting: bury ½”-1” in ground, on side, with tap root facing down. Cover with soil. Mark the area to note where planted, then watch that space to see how they grow. #mosieroaks #mosier #quercus #quercusgarryana #oregonwhiteoak #oregonwhiteoaks #pnwtrees #oregontrees #habitat #oakhabitat #hoodgorge #oregon #eastcascades #columbiagorgeous #treesforwildlife #oakconservation #oak #oaks #trees #pnwnativetrees

A large, native oak and prairie habitat restoration project is set to begin this spring in the Tualatin River watershed! Rainbow Natural Area is a 76-acre site conserved by Columbia Land Trust and nestled in a crook of the Tualatin River near Scholls, Oregon🌳 Thanks to funding from @TualatinSWCD and @ORWildlife, our team will restore native prairie, oak savanna, and oak woodland habitats across 50 acres of Tualatin River floodplain, returning the land to a natural state and enhancing the benefits to wildlife. “We can’t go back in time, but we can help native plant communities take hold and thrive again here,” said Land Trust Natural Area Manager Emily Matson. “We’re excited to be taking the first steps toward restoring this important and rare habitat.” Learn more about the upcoming restoration at Rainbow Natural Area at link in bio or https://www.columbialandtrust.org/funding-secured-for-restoration-in-tualatin-river-watershed/

Elaine Stewart, an ecologist with 20 years experience restoring oak-prairie habitats in the northern Willamette Valley, is speaking about Oregon White Oak Habitats in the Willamette Valley at the Gladstone Park and Recreation Advisory Board meeting on Monday, Feb. 12, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. at Gladstone City Hall, 18505 Portland Ave., Gladstone OR. Stewart is a retired Senior Natural Resources Scientist with Metro’s natural areas program. She will discuss the characteristics and value of oak ecosystems, their resilience to climate change and the oak habitat at Gladstone Nature Park. Her discussion will include the value of Oregon white oaks and their central role in oak and prairie habitat in the Willamette Valley. Many native plants and plant communities are associated with oaks, and many of them are found at Gladstone Nature Park. Once abundant across the Willamette Valley, most of these remarkable oak ecosystems have been lost to development and fire suppression. Yet, in an era of climate change, they may be the most resilient and successful habitats in our area. Stewart’s ecological restoration projects encompass nearly every ecosystem in the lower Willamette Valley and include rare plant and wildlife conservation. Before joining Metro in 1996, Stewart worked for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in marine recreational and commercial fisheries management. She completed her B.S. degree at Oregon State University’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife and she holds a M.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife from the University of Missouri. Gladstone Park and Recreation Board will take business from the audience at the end of the meeting. To speak to the topic of Oregon White Oak Habitats for a maximum of three minutes during this time, email [email protected] before 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Monday, February 12, 2024 with your topic of discussion. @city_of_gladstone @gladstonenature #gladstonenaturepark #gladstonepark #cityofgladstone #oregonwhiteoak #oakhabitat #willamettevalley #elainestewart #habitatrestoration #ecology

First, get to a dark spot before you look at these. It'll make them really show their stuff. Checking ewes and lambs tonight after 6 days gone was such an easy, familiar, and comfortable place to be. 35 degrees, and the stars! I wore the new sherpa hat I picked up at the Kino Gem Show in Tucson (don't ask - IYKYK), made up with Hana for abandoning her whilst she was pregnant, watched Evangeline's lambs rock and roll, and listened to Kix complain. At least these three waited for me to return. Oh, but the stars tonight - experimented with the speed, long exposure, and aperture settings in pro mode, and I feel like I'm getting there. I really like that first shot, when the motion lights lit up the oak tree and barn. All hand-held. This camera is amazing! Sure was a great time, but so good to be back 🥰 . #morganriverranch #samsungs22ultraphotography #nofliter #promode #nightmode #stars #nightphotography #trees #oregonwhiteoak

After last week's massive ice storm, lots of us are looking at trees on the ground-- but what about the trees above us? This post from Clackamas SWCD gives great tips on talking to an arborist to assess dangerous trees while protecting those that are strong and giving value to our ecosystem. Please share this post with your neighbors, especially if they have downed or injured trees. What questions do you have about trees in your area? #portlandicestorm #icestorm #pnwtrees #dougfir #oregonwhiteoak

So, it's above freezing for the first time since Friday, and it has been an absolute war zone around here. 2 transformers blew last night, just a few poles to the west, in an absolutely terrifying light and sound show. Trees snapping and falling. Limbs popping all night like rifle shots. And the power went again around 0330. Other than the scrub tree that split on the fenceline, it's mostly (🤞😬🤞) just been branches and a couple of monster oak limbs out in the pasture. Oh, and no, the new refrigerator is not arriving today 😂🤣😂. And we're losing the porch fridge later on, so back to generators and bagged ice for who knows how long. . #morganriverranch #samsungs22ultraphotography #nofliter #trees #treesdown #oregonwhiteoak # #blackwalnut #nopower #again #ice #icestorm #snow

Speaking of ice....I guess we needed a bridge across Foster Road from our pasture to Don's this morning. As we look forward into the new year, we can’t help but be in awe of the beauty of our region, year round. 🌲 If you’ve visited Yamhill-Carlton, you know this already, but we live here and we never get tired of the view. Every season, every time the fog rolls in from the ocean, every change in the vine cycle, is captivating. To live and work in a place you never get tired of beholding is a gift in itself, and to be able to share this joy with all of you makes it all the more fulfilling. This image is of the elks that gave @elkcove its name. One of the oldest wineries in the Willamette Valley, founded in 1974, Pat and Joe Campbell saw the possibility in this as-yet unplanted part of the valley. And we’re oh so glad they did. Come visit soon, and see what makes us special. 🥂
