Delighted to share that I have a new work “Transforming matter” in a group show PROCESS(ED) at @articulateprojectspace. Curated by Isobel Johnston. On until Jun 2 | Fri, Sat & Sun 11am - 5pm “Transforming matter” is a pair of lumen prints of compost material including some of the worms and wood lice. I imagine compost as a site of wonder and speculation for its centrality to our future, and as a site of transformation due to its constant decay and renewal. My weekend was spent mothering my house: eradicating poisonous weeds from the property, stacking next year’s firewood, and building a compost bin from old rotting palettes and chicken wire. One of our composters brought in their home-grown white chockos for the compost hub volunteers. Spectacular looking fruit from a very vigorous plant. Now we have to decide whether to eat these ones, or start them for planting out this Spring (the compost hub fenc line gets a good 10-hours sun in Summer, so it’s a perfect location). As #ICAW2024 concludes, we would like to recognize one of our composting partners, the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority. We spent today planting seedling trees we purchased from @indianadnr 🌳 38 down, 352 to go! Today we planted mostly pawpaw trees, chokecherry and a chestnut oak that will provide much needed shade in the backyard between the house and our market garden. Each seedling received a shovel of compost from @mmasterson3 @grounddown_fwcompost and was wrapped in a poncho of burlap from @utopiancoffee and topped with wood chips from Shelton Tree Service. Make it work for you! ✍️ Take inventory of what you already have (don't buy duplicates) and then make a meal plan mostly based on ingredients you already have around 💸 Don't waste money by impulse buying at the store or accidentally buying duplicates -- stick to your list! 🚲🚗 Become a food rescuer through the Food Rescue Hero App and save surplus or close-to-expiring food so that they can get eaten (https://foodrescuehero.org/) 🥑 Designate a night of the week to eat up all of your leftover in your fridge ☝️ Develop an "Eat First" bin for any food that needs to be consumed before other food in both your pantry and refrigerator ✨ Have a creative Top Chef moment to come up with a bold and inspiring new dish in your kitchen from unexpected, compatible ingredients that you had on hand ❄️ Literally freeze time and prevent your food from spoiling by placing it in the freezer to eat at a later date. Hakuai Salad Turnips are back this week!! Our recipe of the week on our blog features these delicious buttery vegetables that are amazing mashed like potatoes, even zoodled (we call them Toodles), dipped in your favorite sauce, or even eaten raw like an apple (most kid approved method). How do YOU eat Salad Turnips?? . Turnip Salad with Yogurt Poppy Seed Dressing 1 bunch Hakurai Salad Turnips ½ bag of fresh mixed baby Greens and leafy herbs of choice (OR use the Turnip Greens!) 1 Lemon ½ tsp Chili Flakes Salt and Pepper ½ cup Plain Yogurt 4 Green Onions Olive Oil ¼ cup Poppy Seeds Optional: slice your favorite pear and add it too, or even apple goes well in this salad! Use a mandoline, or chop very thinly, to slice the Turnips. Soak slices in ice water for twenty minutes, then drain. Chop all your greens and add them to a bowl with lemon juice, chili flakes, ½ tsp salt, black pepper, and toss. Add the yogurt and toss again. Add the scallions, ¼ cup olive oil, and turnips, toss again and serve with poppy seeds sprinkled on top. This dish can change flavor depending on your choice of baby greens and herbs. Cilantro, mint, parsley, and chives can all add a different twist to a delish veggie side!
Bruce Kidney, post-anesthesia care nurse, is creating access to healthy foods and helping a local refugee community while he does it with a community garden. The Unity Garden, located in Dayton's Riverdale Neighborhood, will grow produce to provide fresh and healthy foods in an area with limited options. Bruce will also focus on growing produce familiar to the African refugees in the area, including African eggplants, beans, and squash. 🍂 Diario otoñal de una Jardinera 🧉Tomo un mate, miro Instagram y pienso: "Qué bueno, cada vez somos más quienes desde la jardinería, Viverismo, ambientalismo venimos compartiendo en nuestras cuentas la importancia de compostar". Y eso me da alegría. 😠Salgo a hacer las compras y me nace de adentro la necesidad de gritar: ¡¡no embolsen las hojas!! La plaza de mi barrio tiene unos canteros en un estado calamitoso. El suelo desnudo, erosionado...Y las hojas se barren y se embolsan. Una locura🤯 💭 Camino hacia casa con las bolsas y pienso..."quizá mi sueño de una compostera por plaza, escuela, hogar, aún sea un poco lejano, pero ¿qué pasaría si al menos, colocaran las hojas secas como mulching de los canteros? Ese suelo se iría nutriendo, almacenaría humedad, podrían vivir más microorganismos... Lo mismo en los jardines de cada casa" 🦠Entro a casa y me anoto: "comunicar la importancia de los microorganismos". Escribo..."En el suelo hay vida. Ellos cumplen funciones claves en el ciclo de vida de las plantas. Descomponen la materia, las ayudan acercando nutrientes a la zona de las raíces para que puedan absorberlos, los fijan al suelo, ayudan al "sistema inmune"de las plantas...Y para que haya microorganismos tiene que haber humedad. Y un suelo desnudo, expuesto al sol, al viento tiene menos vida... " 🍲Mientras cocino pienso en lo cultural, en los imaginarios... La idea de prolijo/desprolijo.. Falsas creencias como palear los canteros para remover y que entonces se vea "más lindo, más marrón" cuando eso lo único que hace es sacar a la superficie a los microorganismos que estaban más abajo, exponerlos al sol, al viento, al frío y matarlos... 🧉A la tarde, armo otro mate y me pongo con un presupuesto donde vuelvo a dimensionar la cifra que implica comprar compost y corteza para cobertura. Y pienso "y si en vez de explicar los beneficios ecosistémicos, les aviso que ahorrarían muuucha plata...? 🍂Me voy a dormir pensando en mi rol ¿Alguien leerá esto y empezará a compostar? ¿Dejará de tirar las hojas, el pasto cortado...? ¿Sirve lo que hago, alcanza? ♻️ Compost bin problems & solutions! ➡️ #CompostAwarenessWeek There are a few common issues many people have when producing their own garden compost, most are down to an imbalance of green and brown material. ♻️ Soggy, smelly compost "My compost bin smells!" is a very common complaint, even more likely when using enclosed plastic compost bins. The reason is too much green material and not enough fibrous brown. To remedy, add crumpled paper, cardboard, dry brown leaves or other high carbon ingredients. Soggy compost can also occur in an open bin where too much rain is washed through or if the compost bin is built on a site with poor drainage. Cover the pile to protect against rain and move or build an elevated base if the site is wet. ♻️ Dry compost Dry compost that doesn't appear to be breaking down is due to too much brown material. Carbon takes a very long time to decompose unless mixed with nitrogen rich material. To remedy add more green material like grass clippings and mix well. If you have large amounts of dry twiggy material it will need to be chopped and mixed with your greens as it creates a fibrous mat that moisture simply drains through. This material will also be the culprit if you have uneven finished compost as you create pockets where moisture and heat is lost. ➡️ The second image is a handy one to reference. There are, of course, caveats with each of the items on the list (eg whole teabags can go in the compost as long as they are plastic free). #allotment16a Clearing very overgrown undergrowth, which was mainly unpruned raspberry stems and grass to reveal the apple tree and what looks like three plum or green gage trees. Now have a massive pile of greens and browns to rot down and add to the compost. The trees will need to be pruned back after this year's growing season. I helga har jeg blandet jord. Det er litt forskjellig i den: jord fra blomsterkassene i hagen, bokashijord, litt kukompost, perlite og biokull som jeg ladet med bokashivæske gjennom vinteren. Den jordblandingen gir jeg til det som måtte trenge jord med næring av planter både inne og ute. Kukomposten var en sekk jeg hadde igjen fra i fjor. Så langt i år har jeg ikke kjøpt noe jord og er spent på om jeg klarer meg gjennom sesongen uten å kjøpe jord. Frøene som skulle ha såjord ble sådd i hagejord jeg gravde ut før jeg gjødslet. Hva slags jord bruker du? Komposterer du?

A slightly random post for a sunny Sunday. I’m gradually shuffling pots around the patio, as I imagine many of us are at the moment, and I just cheerfully shifted a couple of biggish bananas in 38 cm pots. These pots probably hold about 25 litres of compost, in this case peat-free multipurpose. Bananas are very thirsty and hungry plants, so in some some ways it might make more sense to have them in a more loamy compost, which does a better job of holding onto water. But there is no way I’d be moving the pots about so easily if they were full of heavy loam-based compost. The plants grow perfectly well in the multipurpose stuff, but I suspect I may use more water than I would if they were in John Innes, or similar. Does anyone else think about this stuff?
