Try this flavorful Basil Pesto recipe using our organic basil herbs! 🌱 3-OZ OSAGE BASIL 1/4 cup pine nuts or walnuts, toasted 4 TBS virgin olive oil 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese 1/8 tsp salt 1 to 2 cloves garlic 1-TBS Hot pasta water* This recipe is perfect for your dinner pasta or dipping veggies. 1. After lightly destemming the basil, blanch the basil for ~1 minute in boiling water. Remove the basil from the water with a slotted spoon and drain in a colander for a short time. This blanching gives the pesto a rich wonderful creamy texture. 2. In a blender or cuisinart blend the olive oil, garlic, salt, and blanched basil. Blend for a minute and clean down the sides of the bowl. Add toasted nuts and blend. Last, add the parmesan cheese. 3. Blend until creamy. * Hot Pasta water as needed. I think the basil was the most unexpectedly successful plant so far 😆 it just kept on growing into proper little trees. Hooray for the first large basil harvest of the year! After years of failed basil growing I figured out they love the greenhouse and frequent trimming. Now I have so much basil every year and heap of pesto in the freezer. Growing basil is one of those real money savers as it is a fortune in the store and never seems to look great. Interesting hydroponics experiment with the basil. This has been continually irrigated for the last 8 days since we went away and as a result now tastes quite watery. Will take away the continual water source and let it get dry and stressed to release the actual basil flavour which is as it should be. Hi baby basil 🌱 don’t you look cute on day 4 after popping out of the soil to see me 🥰 These look so fresh and green & I am so proud how quick they have grown in 4 days.. these were sown on Monday & by Wednesday they had popped through the soil.. these look glorious for Saturday in the same week 😅 if I do say so myself 🌱 These have really thrived on the windowsill.. for the first couple of days I had a plastic bag over the pot to produce humidity and it was right near the radiator.. not particularly in any sunshine as it was cold and rainy ☔️ but they germinated really quickly.. I then took the bag off and by the next morning there was little tiny seedlings.. Fun little basil growing test. . The first pic is (the top 4 pots) Black Gold soil with @westcoastseeds Genovese basil at the top, and @bakercreekseeds below (2 of each). Then the four at the bottom are the same but using Reindeer Starter Soil (coir) . The second pic is 4 pots of MySoil Potting mix at the top. And Promix soil at the bottom (both with 2 pots Westcoast seeds, and two pots @bakercreekseeds mixed with @stokeseeds Genovese Basil). . My conclusion is that all the seeds performed pretty much the same, but for the soils; the best looking is surprisingly the Reindeer which makes me happy because Starter mixes are the hardest to find Peat-free options (especially locally made). Coir soils have too much salt content which stunts seedlings after they’re about an inch tall, but basil seems unaffected! I’ll update anyone who cares on how they continue to grow from here! #basilgrowing #yyjgardens #soiltest

I'm nervous.. I bought this basil plant from Aldi and apparently you're supposed to rip the roots apart (gently lol) then you can repot some of it and it will grow and give you free basil forever?? 🌿 Basil pruning 🌿 When growing basil here’s a great technique to produce large, bushy plants. You will want to find the main stem of the plant, follow it up to the top, and then trace back down to the first large set of laterally paired leaves branching off. From here you can pinch off the top of the main stem so that the paired sets are now the top of the plant (Swipe to see). By doing this you will stimulate growth of more height and leaves, because basil wants to go into bloom and produce seeds. Once the plant has grown another 6 inches or so, you can repeat this process on each of the sets. After doing this several times you will have gone from 1 main stem to 2, 2 to 4, 4 to 8 and so on creating a tall, bushy basil plant. Any time you come across a stem trying to form a flower head pinch it off using this same method. Basil pruning. Pruning is an essential part of plant growth. In basil plants, it's a must and should procedure to be followed. Pruning at the right time ensures better growth and better yield from the plant. Pruning can be done in two ways, using a pruning scissors or by hand (if the plant is tender) as you can see in the two clips here. If one is doing it be hand, one should ensure that the stem is not snapped off using finger nails. The first pruning is done by leaving two sets of leaves after the true leaves and cutting off the stem at an angle. This helps the new branches shooting out to grow faster and healthier and branch our further.
