I am off to the States tomorrow to attend the Batik Guild International 'Patterns of Change' exhibition at Naples Botanical Garden in Florida. There are 25 batik artists from around the world exhibiting. However I'm the only one attending the opening.on May 3rd from the UK. It will be really exciting to see the variety of batiks interpreting the title - Patterns of Change. If you are down in Naples, Florida, I do hope you will visit the exhibition at Naples Botanical Garden during the two months. This Batik is called 'Mother Nature'. Nova Scotia suffered both terrible fires and floods last year.. Yet within a few weeks, green shoots started to emerge thanks to Mother Nature. I took lots of photos of the burnt trees and blackened earth. This is my interpretation of 'Patterns of Change' and the results that Climate change is having on our world. Over the last 2 months I've been sowing some perennials. These are plants that I'm familiar with but I've never sown them from seed before. Up until a few years ago I had never sown any perennials from seed before, being quite wary of doing so! But having now successfully grown perennials like Achillea and Gaura, I've gained a bit more confidence to try a few more. Perennials can take quite a long time to germinate, and every day I look for green shoots, but patience is needed! I've started most of them by sprinkling on peat free compost in small trays. Although some have more specific germination requirements, such as the Limonium, which germinates in darkness so it's always good to check packet instructions. Here are some of my trays of little green shoots! 1 & 2. Verbascum hybridum ' Southern Charm' 3. Achillea ptarmica ' The Pearl' 4. Heliopsis helianthoides var. Scabra 5. Lysimachia atropurpurea ' Beaujolis' 6. Limonium tataricum 'Sea Spray ' These are currently on a windowsill, but as they get bigger I'll pot them up into individual pots and pop them outside. It's that time of the year... seeing seeds sprout will never get old. Some are still hiding underground because the weather keeps oscillating between a winter that won't let go and glorious spring days - but whatever comes, I'll embrace and plant, enjoy watching it grow, and love harvesting.
