It’s that time of year again… DAHLIA PRE-SALE! 🌺 This Thursday the 16th of May at 7.30pm our dahlia tubers will be available for sale on our website - www.farmletflowers.co.nz This is a pre-sale of tubers, we will store the tubers over winter and send them out to you when they have eyes, in spring - usually in October. This is a perfect time to plant dahlia tubers for a few reasons… 1. The ground is warming up. Dahlia tubers like a ground temperature of at least 15 degrees to grow happily. They also don’t like to be planted in the middle of a very wet patch with lots of rain - they have a tendency to rot. 2. The last frost is generally gone by mid-late October (depending on where in New Zealand you live) 3. The tubers have visible eyes indicating that they are ready to get planted and spring to life for you! Over the next couple days we will be uploading the varieties that we have available this year. By Thursday these will be all on the website for viewing. At 7pm on Thursday we will set the website to being password protected and you will be unable to access the website from 7-7.29pm while we upload our stock. From 7.30pm the tubers will be available to purchase. We have a limited amount of stock in our pre-sale as we like to err on the conservative side with our numbers. Last year we were absolutely thrilled that all of our tubers stored well and every tuber purchased in the pre-sale was sent out in spring with no refunds or replacements needed. G O O D F O R T U N E It happened again at the weekend. “Oh, you do wedding flowers? Lucky you! How lovely”. My reply, as always was a heartfelt yes, albeit said through very slightly gritted teeth. I am lucky, and it is lovely. But not for the reasons that might spring to mind. I do absolutely love my work, but there’s no wafting around the garden in a floppy hat gathering flowers at dusk to take to the bride in the morning. It’s a bit more intense. Event florists need a head for heights, (or to at least get over the fear of balancing at the top of a ladder fixing foliage, with the next 5 stems held in between their teeth). Event florists don’t sleep a lot before the big day because of the last minute nature of a lot of floral installations, or afterwards because they’re still on the adrenaline high that comes with bringing your clients dreams to life on potentially the biggest day of their lives… (and don’t even ask about the post event “hangover” on a Sunday evening). Event florists need to think on their feet and be able to turn on a sixpence and adapt to many a last minute change of plan, (mostly down to the weather). And event florists don’t need gym membership, because they spend 3-4 days a week bending, lifting, climbing, balancing, and carrying. It goes without saying that there’s no need to ask about the step count, and yes, we ache, a LOT, by the end of the summer. But it is, in my opinion, the very best job in the world, and I am very lucky, because of a few simple things: The flowers; the creativity they allow florists to showcase; the beautiful venues we are allowed access to; and above all else, the wonderful, wonderful, clients and expert suppliers we work with who make the days fun and full of love. That is what makes me feel so very privileged to call this my job: The people. Always the people. The highlight of our Spring garden has definitely been the Lunaria 💜 Usually it would be tulips but they haven’t been great this year 😔 I completely forgot I planted the Lunaria last year (easily grown from seed) so it was a nice surprise when it started flowering. I totally underestimated how big they can get + how many flowers. They’re now developing the beautiful seed pods they’re best known for 😍 Once mature they go a stunning silver/mother of pearl colour with a papery texture and make for great indoor decorations! 💚 Allium Cowanii 🤍 This is a new allium to me this year and what a little beauty it is. Allium Cowanii is also known as Allium Neopolitanum. This variety blooms earlier than other varieties in May & June, it has clusters of small star shaped white flowers with an open centre. These alliums will only grow to 40cm making them an excellent plant for having at the fronts of boarders or in pots & containers. I have mine planted in a trough planter with well draining soil in partial shade to full sun. These dainty alliums make excellent cut flowers or if left in the garden they will bloom up to 3 weeks. Pollinators such as bees butterflies & moths love the open centres and they will also attract birds & hummingbirds to your garden. I’ve read that these allium flowers are edible, you can put them on salads or cakes. This is for information purposes only, I do not recommend you eat anything you’re unsure of. Happy Mother’s Day to all who celebrate. You are doing good work, and no matter what those judgy people say, you’re doing a good job. After my mom died when I was 17, I couldn’t go into a store I knew would have a cheery Mother’s Day card rack for five years. So I know there are some who grieve today. I’m so sorry, and I pray peace for you whatever your situation. I made a lot of mistakes as a mom, but I think I didn’t make all the mistakes my mom did. I tried to change our story, with God’s help. And we did, to a large extent. But some things hang on, even with the best intentions. My daughters, should they choose parenthood, won’t make as many mistakes as I did. I’m confident of that. They’re amazing women. They’ll make different ones, but they’ll move the story forward farther than I could. And that’s all I could ever hope for. As one prepares for this beautiful journey, I’m looking forward to that next step—grandmothering. What an idea! The clock is ticking! According to years past we are between 3-4 weeks until danger of last frost. The USDA says we’re a #zone5b now but I try to treat everything like we’re a whole zone behind just to be safe. Lots of plants in the grow room pleading with me to plant them out and pot them up. Working on rescuing the tomatoes and peppers. Lots of the perennials I started from seed have been hardened off and planted out. I did place a bet that we won’t get another freeze and planted out all my dahlia tubers and gladiolus to give them a head start. What can I say, I like to live on the edge 😂. I finally got the last of the geranium in larger pots and gave them a good dose of fertilizer. Don’t look at the red leaves 😳. They’ll need to be hardened off for the next few weeks so I’ll be shuffling them in and out every morning (at least I get more steps in 🤪). #HillStreetGardens #cutflowers #geraniums #gardening #englishcottagegarden

It’s easy to maximise the life of your flowers with these 3 easy steps 💐 We only use freshly harvested blooms and prepare your flowers with lots of care so they look their best when you get them. Foliage is stripped from the lower part of each stem as foliage in water rots quickly and makes water murky. We wrap our posies in paper as plastic makes flowers sweat. You can keep them tied together or cut the tie depending on the style of vase you use. We don’t believe in additives in water, often florist sachet’s or home remedies with sugar etc accelerate flowers, making them open quicker than they normally would and not lasting as long as they should. As fruit ripens, it releases gases that also accelerates flower’s life, so keep your flowers away from the fruit bowl! Natives dry well, chrysanthemums don’t, remove them carefully if you choose to dry your flowers. By looking after your Mother’s Day flowers they will last up to 2 weeks. This Mother's Day weekend marked two years since we kicked off our business. Mother's Day 2022 we did our first deliveries. Some of our customers that bought from us that first sale, bought from us again this weekend! We can't thank you enough for believing in us as we have continued to learn and grow. We can proudly say every single statement bloom in our Mother's Day bouquets were either grown by us, or by another local grower in Oregon. That has been important to us and a goal of ours since starting this business! We have spent a lot of time this weekend reflecting on all we have learned since that first delivery day. Our first Mother's Day sale we went to the flower market with no recipe. We didn't buy enough stems and we didn't follow proper stem care. It felt like a disaster. Our second Mother's Day sale, we received a huge order of dead statement flowers from a grower. It was another scramble to come up with enough nice stems to fulfill our orders. This Mother's Day we had perfect recipes and amazing stems. The entire weekend was an absolute blessed breeze. That feels so darn good to say.💗 Two growing seasons, many deliveries, multiple special events, a few weddings and funerals under our belt...We feel like through trial and error, plus a few bumps in the road, we are finally finding our groove. All in all, we want to say a heartfelt thanks to you, our dear friends and family who have supported us and encouraged us so well along the way. 💕💐✨ Regardless of what you gifted the moms in your life today, if it was from a small business, I promise you that business poured their heart and soul into it & likely did a leap of joy when they received your support!
