This is a perfect time to plant dahlia tubers for a few reasons… 1. The ground is warming up. Dahlia tubers like a ground temperature of at least 15 degrees to grow happily. They also don’t like to be planted in the middle of a very wet patch with lots of rain - they have a tendency to rot. 2. The last frost is generally gone by mid-late October (depending on where in New Zealand you live) 3. The tubers have visible eyes indicating that they are ready to get planted and spring to life for you! Over the next couple days we will be uploading the varieties that we have available this year. By Thursday these will be all on the website for viewing. At 7pm on Thursday we will set the website to being password protected and you will be unable to access the website from 7-7.29pm while we upload our stock. From 7.30pm the tubers will be available to purchase. We have a limited amount of stock in our pre-sale as we like to err on the conservative side with our numbers. Last year we were absolutely thrilled that all of our tubers stored well and every tuber purchased in the pre-sale was sent out in spring with no refunds or replacements needed. G O O D F O R T U N E It happened again at the weekend. “Oh, you do wedding flowers? Lucky you! How lovely”. My reply, as always was a heartfelt yes, albeit said through very slightly gritted teeth. I am lucky, and it is lovely. But not for the reasons that might spring to mind. I do absolutely love my work, but there’s no wafting around the garden in a floppy hat gathering flowers at dusk to take to the bride in the morning. It’s a bit more intense. Event florists need a head for heights, (or to at least get over the fear of balancing at the top of a ladder fixing foliage, with the next 5 stems held in between their teeth). Event florists don’t sleep a lot before the big day because of the last minute nature of a lot of floral installations, or afterwards because they’re still on the adrenaline high that comes with bringing your clients dreams to life on potentially the biggest day of their lives… (and don’t even ask about the post event “hangover” on a Sunday evening). Event florists need to think on their feet and be able to turn on a sixpence and adapt to many a last minute change of plan, (mostly down to the weather). And event florists don’t need gym membership, because they spend 3-4 days a week bending, lifting, climbing, balancing, and carrying. It goes without saying that there’s no need to ask about the step count, and yes, we ache, a LOT, by the end of the summer. But it is, in my opinion, the very best job in the world, and I am very lucky, because of a few simple things: The flowers; the creativity they allow florists to showcase; the beautiful venues we are allowed access to; and above all else, the wonderful, wonderful, clients and expert suppliers we work with who make the days fun and full of love. That is what makes me feel so very privileged to call this my job: The people. Always the people. The @flowersfromthefarm West Midlands ladies have designed and created the iconic RHS letters at the @rhsmalvern show this week. We’ve been coordinating plans over zoom for a few months and they have come perfectly into fruition this week. Using sustainable mechanics with compost from @fertilefibre and moss from @welshmoss, willow from Warwickshire and plants from @webbsgc with flowers from local members it all looked rather fabulous. We’ve spoken to countless people about the beauty of British flowers this week and taken even more photos of people infront of them- including the @3countiesshows staff this afternoon. What an absolute joy it was to make this for a lovely lady today. It's felt like it's been a very long time since I last made a proper hand tied bouquet from material all cut from the garden. I was a little unsure I would manage it, given how slow everything has been this year, but when she asked I couldn't (wouldn't) say no. I love how flowers have led me to meet so many people - it remains the best thing I've done for meeting others, networking and even making new friends. When we relocated here 18 months ago, to a small village where we knew nobody and a county we've never lived in before, I hadn't factored in how challenging it would be to move somewhere with no network. Throw in a career change and the juggle that comes with motherhood, it was possible life would be very isolated. But it hasn't been, thanks to the flowers I feel. Plants can do that, it's universal, in our DNA. And I will never not be grateful I get to do this and share it with my community. Birthday bouquet for my niece…… I always suffer from a lack of confidence, (imposter syndrome) but I’m little by little starting to find an inner confidence. Jam jars Pretty from every angle 😍 Jam jars are a great way to get your own mini arrangement with a wider variety of flowers as they don’t require long stems. I like to use them with lots of single flowers or the same variety in different colours instead of repeating the same. They look absolutely lovely on a bed side table. It’s been the last week of our specialty tulips and we’re sad to see them go. They’ve been a fabulous crop again this year - and as an added bonus, the slugs and snails didn’t seem to like them. They’ve been steadily decimating other carefully grown and nurtured crops… It’s been a busy week with the growing and floristry and we’ve made some decent progress up at our new additional growing site (more of which another time!). The swifts returned around a week ago so we now have the trio of hirundiniae we get here. How can it be a whole year this weekend since Sophie and Sam tied the knot in a spectacular coast path garden, here on the north coast of Cornwall? The sunshine is here again this weekend and I am sending them my love and best wishes for their first wedding anniversary on Sunday. Sam and Sophie were a real trailblazing couple for my fledgling floral business, going with my idea of using 100% locally grown flowers instead of imported blooms for their wedding day, and therefore reducing the carbon footprint of the wedding flowers by around 90%. I gained it as my heart flower four years ago, heavily pregnant, in the depths of lockdown, waiting for the Boss to arrive. We spent so much time sat in the front garden, wall to wall sunshine that spring, with a tiny patch of lily of the valley throwing it's scent around us.
