How to Use Tumbleweeds in Foam-Free Floral Installations: Tumbles make incredible armatures. They’re airy and light, which makes them excellent for suspended installation work, but there are a few tricks to know beforehand to use them successfully. Here are my tips: 1. Wear gloves. Your gloves should be raw hide or something tough (not just fabric gardening gloves) and with long sleeves if possible. Tumbleweeds are SUPER prickly, and they will stab you relentlessly. Protect yourself and your team! 2. Handle with care. Tumbleweeds are brittle, and they constantly break apart. You can stack them inside a truck because they are light, but if your vehicle has upholstery, be sure to put a drop cloth down to help with clean up. 3. Wear goggles. I’m not even kidding. When suspending the tumbles you will be dealing with their shedding and looking upward. Protect your eyes. Simple clear plastic wood cutting glasses or goggles from the hardware store are perfect. 4. Use heavy-duty fishing line. I recommend 50-100lb weight bearing, and I require 5+ knots at each tying point. The last thing you ever want is for a suspended installation to fall, and they get heavy with all the floral you put into them, so get the right line and tie all the knots. It’s worth it! 5. Suspend them upside down from the base. This is the strongest and thickest branch of the tumbleweed, and you want it to hold. If you flip it upside down, you’ll see that where it was growing out of the ground is its most reliable holding point. 6. Plan for a LOT of floral. Tumbleweeds can become giant black holes somehow because they are so big and just a ball of texture. Plan to have a lot of florals to add to them. 7. Give yourself & your team extra time. This kind of installation can take a while to get rigged up and fully flowered in. You also need multiple ladders, and if you are sharing with other vendors, you may need to wait or do the work in layers. Plan ahead! Let me know if you have Qs. I haven't made an urn arrangement at home for a while.. After seeing Caroline's @weeklyposychallenge Chelsea inspired prompt of "Best in Show" I thought I'd take part as I had a few lovely things in the garden that I wanted to cut. The first was the orange pom poms of buddlea globosa, which are just starting to colour up & attract the bees. Rosa Buff Beauty is also in full bloom, with gorgeous apricot flowers. In total contrast are the tiny burgundy flowers & not so tiny foliage of cotinus, which I had to edit before including here. Little pops of blue nigella & borage are interspersed with white ammi & my favourite self seeding euphorbia. I was gifted the red & yellow flowered broom branches from @virtual_camper_ our friend who lives down the road, who said they were overhanging the path & would I like them?! Well I wasn't going to turn that down. My turn to do the church flowers today and so I cut the last of these glorious deep fuchsia peonies from the garden. They’ve been so beautiful this year despite all the torrential downpours 💕not my usual colour palette ,but I love embracing what’s in flower at any given moment.

It was such an honor to work on this beautiful wedding in Dorset this week, where we brought all the wild texture and romance of an English garden in full bloom to St. James in Kingston, Purbeck. Featuring masses of locally cut foliage, British-grown peonies, and seasonal stems in soft pastel hues. All created without floral foam, we built bespoke mechanics for the larger-than-life urns placed on either side of the church, ensuring the flowers stayed fresh in water throughout the day (and beyond!). Creating beautiful designs is one thing, talking about them.. that’s a different story! A favourite design from this week! Sumptuously soft Picotee Ranunculus, Grasses, Orlaya, Sweet Rocket, Sweet Williams, Anemones and Sweet Pea. Sweet Peas are a very short lived bloom, but the tendrils have great longevity. As I created this two days before a client event, I used the tendrils only. Removing almost all the leaves and utilising their wispy ends to create elegant lines and subtle movement. The month of May brings so many happy flowery memories… including J & P’s beautiful Wedding at @kimbridgebarn with wild blooms & peonies 🌸 🍃 My cherished vintage milk churns welcomed everyone to the space & then moved to create a backdrop. this arrangement has its origins in a little demo I did the other day for an interested group of flower lovers. It was a chance to wave the foam-free flag while playing with my garden’s last hurrah and a few treasures brought along by the audience. The exquisite red rose was one such treasure and today the woman who brought it sent me a photo of it in full bloom. Turns out it’s a very old rose from her mother’s garden and she even offered me to take a cutting which I’d do if I had any clue how. The two bright pink anemones are from local grower extraordinaire @izzybloom.nz I’m having anemone envy as mine aren’t even in the ground yet! Mind you, with all the rain we’ve had in the last few days, perhaps that’s not a bad thing. The arrangement is designed so as not to see the vessel in case you were wondering where it got to… And just like that it’s Friday tomorrow and in another week it will be June and winter and all that jazz.
