The ultimate allotment tool top 3 ✨ Over the years, I’ve been trying to narrow down my allotment tool top 3 and if you told me when I started these would be my most used, I probably would have laughed at you whilst boldly carrying my fork and spade. 1. A hoe. Doesn’t have to be a fancy hoe, and they come in many shapes but a trusty hoe. Hoeing the soil to get rid of the weeds before they properly root is a godsend. It takes me 10 minutes a week to do “all the gaps” and if your hoe is sharp enough, it will break up some of the surface soil clumps too without damaging the soil structure underneath. I sow my plants with wide enough gaps to hoe inbetween too. Mine is a Wolf Garten interchangeable tool hoe, so it gets plenty of use with various lengths of pole and other tools too. 2. My hori hori knife. There’s not a lot I don’t do without this knife. The brand doesn’t really matter, but having one straight edge and one serrated edge makes all the difference. It’s SHARP, anywhere off the allotment site, I’d be arrested for carrying it. I plant with it, weed with it, make lines with it, chop stalks with it; you name it, I use it. 3. My secateurs. I’m a firm believer you need a strong, sharp pair of secateurs for life. In the gardening business world, Felcos are the top dog. It’s a worthy investment that will last you for many years if you look after them and clean them regularly…… which I need to get better at to say the least. I use an olive oil spray and wipe mine often to prevent spreading disease but they can be easily taken apart for cleaning too. All of my harvests above ground are taken with these secateurs as well as cutting flowers and sometimes canes too! A sharp pair go far. Also getting a shout out as a wild card is my bulb planter, which I use for planting no dig potatoes. Love a wild idea which really works! Vaccinium corymbosum Aren't blueberry blossoms captivating? They look so noble and modest. I particularly like the colour change from the pink bud phase to the white flowers in full blossom. Hubby says they look like little porcelain bells 🤍🤍 And while we're talking about blueberries, I would like to ask you: how do you go about planting blueberries in garden soil? How do you prepare the soil? We have a large blueberry bush that is probably older than me. I don't know how my grandparents planted it but it regularly produces a satisfactory yield. A newer bush that I planted some years ago was seemingly not able to tolerate the calcareous soil. Even though I had also put some acidic potting soil in the planting hole. It only ever produced like 1 to 3 berries. But since I dug it up last year and put it into a tub with special acalea soil, it is doing much better and has produced lots of flowers this year. We have had a super busy week and still have lots to do in between the rain. I got most of the tomato plants in and just need to plant the bed that has all the cherry tomatoes. So far I have about 120 planted. I managed to get about 60 pepper plants in Thursday morning before work. I’m still hoping to get trellises and drip tape in and some mulching done in the next couple of days. This is our busiest time of the year but I love it. Everything is growing and blooming. The chamomile is ready to start picking and before long we will be getting strawberries. Cherry tomatoes in the morning sun ☀️ My two varieties if cherry tomato are still producing a ton of fruit and I'm now having to do a bit of harvesting every day to keep on top it. But, honestly I think this will be the last year I grow them unless I suddenly get a polytunnel. Being indeterminate varieties means they grow like crazy and I'm simply running out of space for them to safely grow. Eight o’clock in the evening and my love is still out working on the greenhouses. 💚💚💚 The frames have been put up but we had to buy new plastic because the “reinforced, UV-resistant” covers that came with them literally pulverized last year (after just two seasons of use), littering the garden with microplastics 😖 But I love the new spot where we put them and our veggie garden is looking great 😊 Last year we moved the veggie garden to it’s new spot, just outside the kitchen door instead of in the back of the garden (aka the “out of sight, out of mind” spot) or next to the house on the driveway (not practical)where it has been some time. The weather has been lovely the last couple of days and I moved all seedlings out. Lettuce babes outside and loving the cool spring days. A few years ago, I had a banner lettuce crop that went through June before getting bitter. Last year, I found a random lettuce that I started in the fall and it hung on right through the cold winter in the greenhouse and we had it right until everything else started coming in full. I planted that same variety again but didn’t have the same success🤷🏻♀️. Irgendwie muss ich wirklich alles mal probieren….
