Inga edulis, also known as Ice Cream Bean. Got these seeds from Kelli of #TreeHouseChicks who coated them in Cinnamon to prevent mold and fungus plus moist paper toweling to keep the seeds alive during their trip from Hawaii to San Francisco via snail mail. All arrived in perfect condition and quickly rewarded her efforts and my investment with 100% germination. After a few weeks of babying on a heated seed mat in my grow room with a mix of natural and artificial illumination these are ready to be hardened off on the porch where they will hopefully acclimate to our mild/chilly micro-climate. Each seed by the way proved to be poly-embryonic! These came from an especially big pod producer and I'm crossing my fingers that the largest and most vigorous of these sprouts will eventually survive our frost free Winters and produce yummy treats. These are legumes! They fix nitrogen in the soil and the giant pods when cracked open look like they hold a peeled banana, but it breaks up into sections - each with a large kernel (often sprouting right in the pod) surrounded by a cotton candy like fluff which you suck off the seed for a culinary reward reminiscent of vanilla ice cream. Careful, don't eat the raw seeds! Note the sky. 🌱 Veg Patch Update! 🌱 . . Added another section to the path, tested it out with the wheel barrow full of bricks, going uphill. Can confirm it is just right! . As it's stopped raining, I decided to pull back the weed matting only to find the soil is 100% compacted, anaerobic, water logged clay...so the only solution was to pull back the cover, and turn it all over by hand with a fork. It smelt like an old bog. But it was SO FULL of worms! 🪱 . I removed a section of fence for easy access to the greenhouse/water and plants! . Then, I looked at the bottom of my sweetcorn and realised they were ready for the ground, however the ground was not suitable as is, so I needed a bit of organic matter/compost in the hole first 🌽 33 plants later, we have our mini plantation! . Then the chip arrived! Big thanks to @warnertrees and @the_wheeling_arborist for your delivery! The chip mulch has been really good at retaining moisture during these hot days, and on top of that, it improves the soil! . Then I did a bit of labelling and plant swapping with one of the locals, I am planning on planting beans next to the sweetcorn alongside courgettes, pumpkins, and squashes 🌽🫘🥒🎃 . As the weather has drastically changed, we have had to take our starters out of the green house during the day so they don't roast and the next project is to put them into the ground! This marks the beginning of vertical growing for all our vine plants. We put pole/bush beans and melons into the ground too soon, and the rainy weather of this last 3 weeks killed most of the transplants, so we are putting some of the new ones into the ground, and starting a few fresh melon start. I am doing a cooking demonstration at the YMCA today, so I had to rush a meal prep and get ready for my class. Burgers on protein bagels and spaghetti and meatballs. When you’re a bit pressed for space at the micro homestead, 33 pots on the deck should do it! The hottest and most protected side of the house is the tomatoes and pepper haven half of the year. The ultimate allotment tool top 3 ✨ Over the years, I’ve been trying to narrow down my allotment tool top 3 and if you told me when I started these would be my most used, I probably would have laughed at you whilst boldly carrying my fork and spade. 1. A hoe. Doesn’t have to be a fancy hoe, and they come in many shapes but a trusty hoe. Hoeing the soil to get rid of the weeds before they properly root is a godsend. It takes me 10 minutes a week to do “all the gaps” and if your hoe is sharp enough, it will break up some of the surface soil clumps too without damaging the soil structure underneath. I sow my plants with wide enough gaps to hoe inbetween too. Mine is a Wolf Garten interchangeable tool hoe, so it gets plenty of use with various lengths of pole and other tools too. 2. My hori hori knife. There’s not a lot I don’t do without this knife. The brand doesn’t really matter, but having one straight edge and one serrated edge makes all the difference. It’s SHARP, anywhere off the allotment site, I’d be arrested for carrying it. I plant with it, weed with it, make lines with it, chop stalks with it; you name it, I use it. 3. My secateurs. I’m a firm believer you need a strong, sharp pair of secateurs for life. In the gardening business world, Felcos are the top dog. It’s a worthy investment that will last you for many years if you look after them and clean them regularly…… which I need to get better at to say the least. I use an olive oil spray and wipe mine often to prevent spreading disease but they can be easily taken apart for cleaning too. All of my harvests above ground are taken with these secateurs as well as cutting flowers and sometimes canes too! A sharp pair go far. Also getting a shout out as a wild card is my bulb planter, which I use for planting no dig potatoes. Love a wild idea which really works! The gap at the front is for bush beans which are still too young to plant out. I looooove my vegtrug. You know how people say ‘just plant one thing’, and part of you thinks ‘but one bit of lettuce isn’t going to save the world’. What they’re getting at, though, is that planting something is the first step towards growing lots of things. It’s the first step towards appreciating the seasons, to discovering the magical world of nematodes and humus that lies beneath our feet, to spending more time outdoors and less time in line at the supermarket. It’s the first step towards seed saving and having a deep appreciation for local food sovereignty. It’s a step towards taking our needs into our own hands and removing our vote from the industrial food system. It’s the first step towards learning how to cook with whole foods, how to forage wild fruit and eat local weeds. It’s a step towards the deep satisfaction we feel from embracing growing food as a new and important skill. Planting one thing leads to all this and more.
