Some days we feel like we can do it all, and some days we're stuck on the couch - paralyzed by anxiety. Today is a couch day. I'm kind of okay with that, I know my body needs rest after yesterday's weeding workout... And while it obviously looks like physical rest, it's most certainly not mental or emotional rest by any means... and that's what I struggle with. Since Birdie passed last June, my OCD symptoms have skyrocketed out of control. If I don't arrange my belongings a certain way, Walter might get sick. If I don't follow a certain order of events before I leave for work, the house might burn down with Walter in it. If I don't check the door lock immediately before I leave, even though I checked it when I came downstairs 10 minutes prior, Walter might escape. And even more scary, inappropriate thoughts that I don't dare share here. My point being, OCD is not just liking things organized and neat & tidy. It's rituals and intrusive thoughts that can make everyday tasks nearly impossible. I was struggling - it made me late to work, sick to my stomach with anxiety, etc. So I found a new doctor and decided to try meds. I had no idea OCD was treatable by medication. I jumped at the idea of not having to put in any work, thinking a pill would minimize my symptoms. Ha! I quickly learned medication is not for me... I haven't been on any kind of meds for my mental health in over a decade. I forgot how numb they made me feel - it's actually got a name: emotional bunting. Not only was I unable to cry - it was physically impossible - I also couldn't laugh. I was miserable. I needed to be able to feel & to release my emotions. I also developed a temporary tic like I had before on SSRIs. They made me so exhausted that my jaw quivered when I yawned, and I had to smack myself in the face to stay awake while I drove to and from work. I gave it a month, and eventually came off of them. After a week long migraine, I celebrated the fact that I felt like myself again. 🖤 Continued in comments...

Starting from seed is an addiction unlike any other and I never want to stop. I’m always amazed that a tiny seed will grow into a plant that gives and gives. This is my tomato jungle for the year. 3 entire flats worth! I’ve shared tomatoes with everyone who comes over, I’ll be taking a flat to my demonstration garden and finding room for the rest in my space. We might be tearing out more lawn 😂. There’s also 2 trays of @floretflower dahlias, and one of pumpkins, melons, and beans. And friends, it is planting time!!! Wishing all of you mamas a beautiful and restful weekend 💐

Everything is Out~ 🍃🤓🍃 Started early this morning planting out all corn, pumpkins, and squash! 🔸Corn- Damaun 🔸Pumpkin- Musquee de Provence 🔸Pumpkin- Marina di Chioggia 🔸Squash- Crookneck 🔸Squash- Straightneck We’ve given them an area to truly expand around the feet of the corn, with calendula and marigolds at the borders. Dreamy! Courgettes in the central low bed. Last of the tomatoes out. Whew ☕️ All beans have been untangled and planted, and are happily winding their way upward. Woot! I’ve surrounded them with saved lint from the tumble dryer (and hair clippings) to wart off any slugs and snails. 🐌 The scatter sown lettuce bed is gaining noticeable height each day. The entire bed is for cut and come again, as we use lettuces everyday. It will stay netted throughout the season to keep the beasties out. 🐌 Back at it! Oh, August. You are the pinnacle of garden glory. This week has been such fun. Shucking corn. Picking tomatoes. Not pictured here are the hundred of peppers I’ve yet to pick. I’m so thankful for our gardens and the bounty they provide now and in the winter months to come. I am looking forward to autumn. The cool mornings, lack of bugs, and lack of humidity. The native Nootka rose I saved from a country lane tire track years ago is blooming for the very first time. I was on a hike, and remember when I saw the tiny plant with its easily recognizable jagged leaves growing up from the center of the tire path—a location that seemed like certain death—and decided to uproot it and tuck it in my backpack. I had water on me, but nothing to soak and place around the roots. I took a chance. Hours later, I pulled the dry, flattened plant from my pack and stuck it into an already crammed garden bed. I watered it and sort of forgot about it after a couple of days of checking on its poorly condition. I wrote it off as too far gone. Fast forward to months later, I came across it, still tiny, but alive and growing! When we bought our house and I dug out my rental garden, it was a high priority plant, right up there with my dahlia tubers. To see it finally bloom here, and to know it will find a home in the ground and be freed from its pot (when I determine the right location—its a very thorny one, and wouldn’t be easily moved later), makes me so happy. The Okra Situation~🍃☕️🍃 It appears the okra is enjoying the greenhouse climbs so far. Whew. After a few failed attempts in seasons past: weather conditions, slug slaughter, iffy compost, etc., it seems this might be the okra year!
