Gorgeous Kelgai Ann rooted cuttings from @highpetalcount If you are a dahlia lover, you likely know that Kelgai Ann is a highly sought after hard to get dahlia. These are known as unicorns in the dahlia community and yes, there are also dahlia ‘wars’ - which is when sales go live online, there is a massive scramble to see who can add to cart and check out the fastest. Some happy cosmos babies I grew from seed! Their foliage is so textural and fun! Here we’ve got Rubenza (red), apricot lemonade (yellow/pink/peach mix color blooms), and sea shells (purple tube like petals off a yellow center). I also seeded Black Magic Chocolate (black blooms) in the winter sowing but the packet only contained 5 seeds and they didn’t come up. YET. I didn’t give up hope - I brought the milk jug inside and put it on a heat mat. Nothing germinated yet. We shall see. This is the first year I hired a landscape company to mulch the ENTIRE front garden. It took 12+ yards of mulch and less than 1 whole day! I have done the bulk of the mulching myself for the last five years, it usually takes me multiple weeks to complete. They even helped me sheet mulch the last two areas of grass. Officially, the front garden expansion is complete. All areas that I planned to become front garden beds are now garden beds. And now to add more plants after I stare at the empty spots for the next two weeks. Going to try and grow grapes in the greenhouse. 1. Because I love grapes and 2. I want to trellis it to the ceiling to give myself shade. I bought these bare roots. Noticed the vendor tied the roots and had to untangle them. And then soaked them in water for 5-10 minutes before I am going to pot them. Spring this year; the most intense weather season we've had here by far. Waking up to thunderstorms, hail and lightening crashing all around, watching radars for tornados and running to the dusty storm shelter with our dogs before it hits. "Nature is metal" is something I keep thinking about. . Living in the desert most of my life with the occasional rainstorm and barely any differentiation from the seasons, I never realized how much the weather could impact. It's been contant stress about the animals and tending to them in rain and mud isn't my favorite activity but staying awake for hours with tornado risks is definitely the cherry on top for all of us. On the bright side I'm learning persistence through hardship, efficiency and practicality but it tests my patience. Also the blackberries are thriving. 🍃🌈 #homestead #farm #gardening #zone6b

What a surprise! I uncovered this dahlia sprout while cleaning up some beds this morning. I didn't get a chance to dig my tubers up last fall, and I never expected any of them would survive the winter. I'm so excited to see it, but also a little unnerved. We had a very mild winter, and I know that's the only reason this dahlia made it. Love it when the Japanese maples leafs out. This front yard garden view is going to be so vibrant, textural, and full of color soo soon!
