Yesterday I talked about harvesting Catmint. Today I want to share a little about its medicinal virtues. I grow Nepeta racemosa but it’s interchangeable with Nepeta cataria for therapeutic use. Catmint is excellent for soothing children suffering from fevers. It promotes sweating and makes them feel more comfortable. It’s also very calming to the nervous system and promotes restful sleep. Its aromatic constituents give it the property of settling an upset stomach, easing colic, flatulence and diarrhoea. Cats go mad for it so expect your cat to be very interested while you’re sipping your infusion. I can’t grow Catmint in my home garden due to the local cat population who, when I tried planting some, rolled in it until it disappeared into bare soil. This is the time of the year that I like to take a harvest of Catmint for herb teas. Yes, the conventional wisdom is to harvest when flowering, but, at this earlier growth stage, the stems are pliable and the leaves are sweet and vibrant. Plus it’s much easier to prepare for drying and it makes beautiful and medicinally effective, herbal tea. I do sometimes take a second harvest when it’s flowering and mix the two together. This is Nepeta racemosa but it’s interchangeable with Nepeta cataria for therapeutic use. I’ll talk about Catmint’s medicinal virtues in another post soon so stay tuned. Really pleased with the early sowings of mini herb pots, they germinated well in the greenhouse and have sprinted to the picking stage. These were some flat leaf parsley seeds gifted from a Cotswold grower, called "Giant of Italy". They could have been grown inside on a windowsill - but I didn't have any more room! Basils Fam. Recently I am into collecting different types of basils. Waiting for someone to swap with me can be painful wait, so I have decided to get seeds and germinate it myself instead. I grow them for culinary purpose and also to explore different types of basils for various dishes / cuisine types. Some told me that lemon basil tastes great with seafood and Genovese / Italian are great for Pesto. Currently in my collections are - Thai basil, Holy basil, Italian sweet basil, Genovese basil, Lime basil, Lemon Basil, red Rubin. (7) The red rubin has pretty low germination rate compared to lime and lemon. These seeds are bought from lucky clove. I guess I m lucky to get just 1 😃. Can’t wait to watch the seedlings grow. I love the look of the Genovese basils. Perhaps I should move them to a bigger pot. A mover and shaker in her lifetime, she helped hundreds of people with there health, and ensured we could train and have a choice by keeping the original medicine available to everyone. Why, because after the Second World War there was a ban being introduced to the UK with only pharmaceuticals as the choice. Today I want to post a little about my priorities in making sure that the herbs I prescribe can properly benefit the patients who take them. When we have a direct connection to our medicinal herbs, we naturally want to ensure that they fulfil their healing destiny. Part of this is avoiding them going to waste. Let me give a very simple therapeutic example. How can we expect herbs to help someone sleep if they’re drinking too much caffeine? If we simply prescribe a mix of calming and soporific herbs, they won’t be properly effective and their healing potential won’t be realised. The herbs will, in effect, be wasted. Meanwhile, the poor person who can’t sleep won’t get the results that they’re desperately seeking. This is not a good situation for the patient and it’s not a good way to honour and respect our herbs. Of course, in real life cases, there are always many factors and nuances rather than a simple single cause of illness. However lifestyle and dietary factors are always fundamental. Even people with a pretty healthy lifestyle and diet may need to just make a slight shift in order to get some really significant health benefits. I absolutely love my job, connecting with my patients, finding out what’s really happening and untangling the causal threads of the dis-ease state. I have so much to say about this that I’ve written a book called: ‘A Working Herbal Dispensary - Respecting Herbs as Individuals’ and it’s published by @aeonbooks_publishing. As well as outlining the principles of my therapeutic approach, I describe physiological, energetic and magical associations of 108 herbs in my dispensary. I also share numerous anonymised case studies and recipes for the home apothecary. It’s a labour of love! Keep it local, was the way of our ancestors. Using stone and slate from the area, as can be seen in this upright slate, which would have been connected with natural twine from #trees not wire as now. Stone was used to build round houses, + walls for settlers living near the magnificent #aberfalls The stone circles of houses can still be seen, many covered in moss as #nature reclaims the landscape. Moss + lichens are living breathing beings that have evolved + adapted to the ever changing conditions. Animals + insects etc also adapt, just as we humans have, but not always in a sensible, healthy way that works alongside the natural order of the planet.
