This week is International Compost Awareness Week and this year’s theme is COMPOST: Nature’s Climate Champion! The 2024 theme highlights the role compost plays in fighting climate change. Here are just a few benefits of composting food and yard waste: 🌏Waste diversion: Composting organics reduces use of landfil space. 🌏Decreasing methane: Methane, a greenhouse gas twenty-five times as powerful as carbon dioxide, can be significantly reduced through the composting of organics. 🌏Climate change mitigation: The return of compost to the soil acts as a “carbon bank,” aiding in carbon storage and effectively removing it from the atmosphere. 🌏Soil health: Incorporating organic matter into soil improves soil’s ability to hold nutrients, leading to improved plant growth and a reduced need for pesticides. #albanywa #worms #gardeningwa #denmarkwa #designerdirt #greatsouthernliving #greatsouthernlivingsoil #gsls #gslsoil #greenlifesoil #plantplayground #harbourplants #organiconcharles #nightingalesnursery #allsoils #blossomsdenmark #the_green_pantry #denmarkchamberofcommerce #albanybusinesscentrewa #marios_stockfeeds #thirdstonetraders #permacultureperth #cobwa #urbanpermaculture #perthgardens #wagardeners #waicc #regenwa

Growing up, every house had a garden and every garden had a lemon tree. I’m glad I have this big, ol’ tree. It pumps out fruit year round so generously. Pollination is obviously not an issue here, with 8 baby lemons growing together 😄

Yummy ripe fig. Beautiful colour and rich berry flavour. It might be the last fig of the season, now temperatures have dropped. I’ve been eating figs since December by growing different varieties, which ripen at different times. All the trees are still young and will improve with age, so I can’t tell which is my favourite yet.

Oh yeah baby! My papayas are finally ripening and this big beauty was delicious. Notice the absence of seeds? I did a bit of research and found out a possible reason. It’s uncommon but there are female papaya trees that don’t need pollination to produce fruit but the fruit is seedless. 🤷‍♀️ Interesting.

Autumn is here and I’m starting to see some colour in the garden. I’ve got a lot to do after an incredibly hot summer and some time off to sit exams. Beetroot are another easy vegetable to grow, particularly when you have the challenge of sandy soil. The leaves grow quickly but it takes a few months to grow a big bulb… which reminds me, I still have home-made pickled beetroot and beetroot relish in the cupboard. Any suggestions on how to use these, other than burgers?

4/11/2024, 4:29:37 AM

Mustard grows easily from seed and more quickly than most other leafy greens. It’s big, crunchy leaves have that classic spicy mustard flavour. I add a little to salads but also feed it to my chickens to keep them healthy. Mustard is said to detoxify soils and remove root knot nematodes. Mustard flowers are very attractive to bees and mustard seeds are used in cooking and preserving. Do you grow mustard?

4/10/2024, 2:29:53 AM

What am I growing in my vegetable beds right now? It’s actually hot outside, more like summer, but all my winter annual veggies are in. Spinach, lettuce, mustard, broccoli, rapini, kohlrabi, pak choy, peas, beets, rocket, carrots, garlic, basil, parsley, coriander, leek and probably a few others I can’t recall. How do I fit them all in? By planting just a few of each type and planting quite close. But not too close as plants will be stunted. After a few seasons you know how big each one grows and how much you can push it.

Do you know what these are? The Tropical pink guava tree is in full production now so time to process the aromatic fruit. I trim the end and remove the seed pulp before making into a jam or purée. This is not only used as a spread but is added to cakes, muffins and smoothies. My friend, on the other hand, peels and freezes the fruit but my freezer is already full. I’m also reminded of another friend who put 31 litres of fruit into her chest freezer, only to lose it all when the power was cut off!

I grow a variety of leafy greens (for us and the chickens) but I’d have to say this is my favourite. Perpetual spinach. It’s not perpetual nor is it a spinach, so interesting name choice, hey? 🤪 I grow it as an annual and it’s actually from the beet family. But it tastes like spinach, is easier to grow, provides for many months and with big, flat, glossy leaves, there’s nowhere for pests to hide. But now, these are only young plants, grown from seed sown about 6 weeks ago. They’re just about ready to begin a light harvesting of the outer leaves, leaving the inner leaves to keep growing. If you end up with an abundance, the leaves can be blanched and frozen for later - a great addition to soups, eggs, pies etc. Does it get any better than that?

I don’t! Instead a balanced garden is my goal. It’s a long term solution. To attract beneficial creatures to the garden, there has to be food. And for ladybirds, lacewings, mantids, dragon flies, lizards and birds, that means providing space for “pests” such as aphids, mealy bugs, flies, crickets etc. We don’t want plagues but leaving a sacrificial plant or two, is like opening a snack bar for friends 😄

Figs are tricky. The leaves can be very different on the same tree and even the fruit can look and taste different one week to the next. So identifying a particular variety can be impossible. But Peter Good has HUGE leathery 3-lobed leaves, making it different from the rest. And as fruit ripens, it turns from green to yellow and then adds a purple blush with vertical cracks on the skin. This year, the fruit has been delicious with a sweet lingering burst of flavour. Possibly my favourite fig this season. Fig trees improve with age so next year the flavour will probably be even better! Do you have a favourite fig?

3/20/2024, 12:18:32 AM

Just like last autumn, these pumpkin vines aren’t dying off - quite the opposite. They’re having a flush of flowers and sending out new runners as though it’s spring. But then, I also come alive in autumn when the weather is milder and the sun’s glare begins to fade. Do plants take after their gardeners? 😂

Get ready for winter! I’m sowing trays of seeds now to plant out next month. At this stage I overplant to account for any later losses. These are mostly leafy greens, broccoli and beets. Other types of seeds I sow directly in the beds, eg peas and carrots. Cloves of garlic were planted yesterday too. There’s never enough room for everything I’d like to grow and inevitably I start eyeing off other parts of the garden to plant edibles.

These grow like weeds! Jerusalem artichokes, members of the sunflower family, are the easiest flowers to grow over the hot, dry summer months, even in my sandy soil. Underground 100s of tubers will be developing. I don’t know if you’ve tried them but the taste is delicious. But do you know why they’re not on more menus?

3/8/2024, 11:09:56 PM

Here it is. The third variety of avocado in my garden and the least successful - it’s still a twig, with a deceptive flush of leaves that in the past have dropped off. So there’s a 50/50 chance of it heading to the compost bin. Yet either side of it the avocado trees are large and flourishing! What’s going on? This is a grafted Reed and I have heard they can be more difficult than a seed grown tree. Or it could be something else, like root knot nematode, which I won’t know till I dig it out (stay tuned 😝) I chose Reed because it’s the best tasting avocado and (hopefully) will have a different harvest season… if it ever matures. Anyone else growing a Reed?

3/8/2024, 5:30:39 AM

Still warm in Perth with no rain here yet, but I can feel autumn approaching. The sun’s path has dropped and a few deciduous trees have leaves beginning to turn yellow. So time to put in more lettuces , a few winter seedlings and sow seeds ready for the cooler weather. The trick is to keep these moist while settling in. On hot days that might mean a quick morning and afternoon spray with the hose. In front is Perpetual spinach, a favourite leafy green.

Talk about confusing! My previous post was on the Lamb Hass. Today it’s the Hass. A reputable nursery told me the Lamb Hass was a Hass, just smaller. But luckily I’d already done my research. Did you know they’re not the same or even closely related? In fact, the Lamb is closer to the Gwen. Anyway, the Hass, another type A, is widely grown commercially for its high production, excellent taste and black skin indicating ripeness (and covering up blemishes). My tree was planted in Spring and has grown so much already! In fact, it’s taken off faster than the Lamb did. But I have one more avocado variety growing and it looks quite different. Stay tuned - I’ll review it in my next post.

3/5/2024, 1:22:42 AM

What do I think of the Lamb Hass avocado? Well… It’s a smaller variety of avocado tree, supposedly, and a type A. I planted this one about 18 months ago and what I’ve noticed, is its interesting growth habit. It’s more like a shrub than a tree, with multiple branches growing low on the trunk. It grew a fruit to maturity in its first year, which is a great indicator of self pollination and productivity. The fruit was delicious, but not unusual. In its 2nd season, there were few flowers and no fruit, so it’s might be biennial. The Lamb Hass needs love and protection, like all young avocados in a hot, dry climate but with that in place, it’s continued to put out new growth since planting. I’m very happy with it 👍🏼 What’s your favourite avocado?

Harvesting vermicompost from our worm beds. What is Vermicompost??????????? Vermicompost is a nutrient rich organic fertilizer and soil conditioner, produced through the process of vermi-composting, i.e., a method of composting organic waste using earthworms. The worms digest the organic waste, breaking it down into a fine, crumbly substance that is high in beneficial microbes, organic matter & essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Vermicompost is an invaluable source for gardeners, farmers and environmentalists alike, offering a natural and sustainable way to enhance soil fertility and plant productivity!! #albanywa #worms #gardeningwa #denmarkwa #designerdirt #greatsouthernliving #greatsouthernlivingsoil #gsls #gslsoil #greenlifesoil #plantplayground #harbourplants #organiconcharles #nightingalesnursery #allsoils #blossomsdenmark #the_green_pantry #denmarkchamberofcommerce #albanybusinesscentrewa #marios_stockfeeds #thirdstonetraders #permacultureperth #cobwa #urbanpermaculture #perthgardens #wagardeners #waicc #regenwa

Almost matches my arm 😂 This is my first harvest of Tromboncino, which grows as a vine and produces these long squash. My first time growing - best way to cook these babies?

3/2/2024, 12:21:24 AM

I love asparagus so started preparing a bed soon after moving in 2 years ago. I haven’t eaten any yet - such restraint - but come Spring, there will be a harvest of the first fat spears. Asparagus is a long-term investment. Firstly, it requires a dedicated and permanent area set aside. You patiently wait around 3 years for the plants to get well established, then you have asparagus for life. How many plants do you have and is it enough?

3/1/2024, 1:31:15 AM

A winner! This pumpkin had split its skin so I opened it up to check. Ends up it was only a surface crack and the pumpkin was otherwise perfect - heavy, fleshy, brightly coloured and already very sweet in flavour. For bonus points, this variety stores well for up to 10 months. I leave pumpkins on the vine till everything dies off, then cut, leaving a nice brown stalk. This ensures the pumpkin has fully ripened and is ready to store.

2/27/2024, 11:46:51 PM

Did you know berries of the Curry leaf tree are edible? The taste is much like the leaves, with that smoky curry flavour, plus a touch of sweetness. Edible but not something I’d seek out. Curry berries, as they’re called, can be eaten fresh off the tree when ripe (black) but throw away the seeds, which are toxic. More commonly the leaves are used, as aromatics and flavourings in Indian and Asian recipes. My tree was in a pot for 10 years but now it is in the ground, it’s taken off and looking very lush.

2/26/2024, 11:59:49 PM

If you’re a new vegie gardener, I wouldn’t recommend seed saving. Just buy punnets of seedlings and learn to grow them. But after a couple of seasons, you might be ready for more. Seed saving can get complicated but peas and beans are easy to start off with. Just allow the vines to die then pick off the brown, crunchy pods. These are the long, thin pods of delicious Snake beans. I place all the dry pods in a large bowl and scrunch with my fingers till all the beans pop out. These fall into a pile at the bottom of the bowl to be easily collected and stored. I started with just 10 Snake bean seeds in Spring, now I have a heap for next season.

Who loves bamboo? Me! These fat spears grew 10cm a day till, a month later, they reached 4 metres. Most trees would take 4 years or more to achieve the same height so bamboos can make a great privacy screen. My two favourite varieties are Oldhamii and Slender Weavers. These are both clumping bamboos with an upright growth habit so can be positioned in more narrow spaces. They do drop a lot of leaf litter so not ideal for those wanting pristine paving or pools.

2/13/2024, 3:26:46 AM

Waiting, waiting… surprisingly, summer is not when most of my fruits ripens. Autumn is the most bountiful season, when these feijoa, pink guava, late figs, olives and papaya will be ready to harvest. It will take a few years to fill in the “gaps” in fruit harvests (grow little mango trees, grow!) In the meantime, I’ll have to make do with fresh figs, lemons and jars of preserves. #doingittough 😁

2/7/2024, 2:40:46 AM

Two years! That’s how long it’s taken to get around to this big job. I’m talking about repotting all my succulents. Not just this small selection but more than 60 pots. To make it more challenging, I only used pots I already had - so matching plants to upsized pots was a bit like a jigsaw puzzle 😄 It was hard work, especially lifting heavy terracotta, but feels good to know the succulents will be happier. Not everyone loves succulents but they’re colourful, strangely wondrous and particularly forgiving plants.

The three year plan. That’s how long I figured it would take to really turn the garden around. Three years would allow the soil to improve and the fastest growing trees to reach 3 metres and provide some privacy, shade and wind protection. The first trees planted were a row of Cottonwoods. I bought 7 for less than $100! Almost 2 years later, the trees are 2.5 metres tall and a metre wide.

A fig a day keeps the doctor away. This variety produces small black fruit with delicious berry flesh and chewy skin. I’m still waiting for some varieties to ripen to find out which is my favourite. Do you have a favourite fig?

The first year was a struggle! Like most of my fruit trees, this dwarf Macadamia suffered for the first year in the harsh local conditions - sand, alkalinity and exposure to almost constant winds. But after 18 months, it is regularly putting out new flushes of leaves. It has grown from 40cm tall to about 140cm. I wonder how long it will be before nuts appear 🤔

1/30/2024, 3:37:52 AM

The harshest location here is a narrow garden bed against a west-facing wall. The ‘soil’ is grey sand and it cops hot afternoon sun, reflected heat off bricks, coastal winds and storm fronts. Despite this, Hibiscus shrubs stay green and keep flowering year round. I can totally understand why this plant used to be so popular - it’s both beautiful and tough. But garden design has its trends and plants come in and out of fashion. What’s in fashion now? Anything indigenous has been popular with home gardeners - bush tucker, native plants, native gardens and verges. I wonder which garden trend will leave and what will become popular 🤔
