This species was occasional in Mussoorie at an elevation of ~2000m, along roadsides and roadcuts. I’ve posted this because the Dawn Redwood ( Metasequoia) is a unique tree.A native of China,thought to be extinct, was rediscovered in 1944 in a remote valley in China and, in the late 1940’s seeds were first brought to the Western world by Harvard University.We think they were first propagated in New Zealand soon after and, while we have 7 growing here, the 2 in these photos are the oldest and biggest in our garden and over 70 years old.They are deciduous and put on a great show of colour in late Autumn.The foliage is very similar to Swamp Cypress and to tell the difference , the leaves on the Dawn Redwood are directly opposite whereas the Swamp Cypress alternate.My rough calculation of the height is 90-100 feet tall #dawnredwood #redwood #trees #raretrees #deciduous #endangered #nature #autumncolors #autumn #mygardentoday

A smaller Ginkgo that I am really proud of this year and I feel like would very easily get overlooked with all of my other projects. This tree needed a new pot which is something I have never struggled with in terms of pot selection (shape/color) but it also needed some thought on what could be done to improve otherwise weird and chunky material. I worked down the center of the tree to allow for space between what I discovered to be two trunks. It was slow and detail oriented work which I tend to gravitste towards when I need a mental vacation. AUTUMN/ WINTER GARDENING NEWS from Phil Agaciak 🌺🍂 Autumn is upon us, we can feel that the season has changed with colder mornings, a chill in the air and shorter days. The soil temperatures have dropped to about 15 degrees C. Our deciduous trees are dropping their leaves to store nutrients as a measure to survive the cooler months. In summer, when it is very sunny and warm, plants photosynthesise a lot. When autumn comes, with shorter, cooler days, deciduous trees know it’s time to prepare for winter. A deciduous tree breaks down the chlorophyll in the leaves and sends the nutrients down to the roots to be stored underground until things heat up again. When chlorophyll is broken down in the leaf, the green colour disappears. The colours we can see in autumn are from what is left behind in the leaf and this ranges from yellow to orange to red, maroon and brown. One type of natural chemicals left are carotenoids, which is what makes carrots orange. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN OUR GARDENS THIS TIME OF YEAR You can find the colours changing on our European Nettle, Chinese pistachio and Genko near the main entrance. Our Elm trees in the courtyard and near Wilcox are deciduous, as are the Malus/Crab Apples and Genko near 2nd Terrace, the Pyrus/Pear near 3rd Terrace and the Chinese Elms near the DRM rear carpark. 🍂🍃🍁🌳 As for what is flowering this time of year, check out our hibiscus shrubs, Birds of Paradise, roses, Mexican sage and camellias. 🌺🌸🪷🌹 #gardens #gardenupdate #autumngarden #autumngardening #photosynthesis #deciduous #deciduoustree #stannscollege #rosegarden #collegecampus
