Dutch Iris ‘Silvery Beauty’ at the end of the path from the house to the Rose Meadow. Vita put irises all along the paths on top of the walls, particularly bearded irises, interspersed with pinks and other experiments. Given the hard conditions in these narrow beds the iris abundance in the picture of Virginia Woolf beside the house is testament to Vita’s green fingers! #virginiawoolf #vitasackvillewest #iris #irissilverbeauty #historichouse #historicgarden #englishgarden #englishgardenstyle

Mai im Verlag Schöffling & Co. Jack Vass, Sissinghurst's first Head Gardener, listed Rosa Ispahan as one of the roses contemporary to Vita Sackville-West's time here. It’s also something visitors can still see in the garden to this day. Writing in The Observer in 1948, Vita recalled her time in Iran in the 1920s, exploring the bazaars and hoping that the seeds she had planted "should appear as though spread with the most sumptuous carpet from Isfahan." This Damask rose, also known as an Iranian rose, is just one of the colourful reminders of Vita's travels abroad. #Accessibility: Rosa Ispahan in the Rose Garden at Sissinghurst Castle © National Trust Images/Rachel Warne #SissinghurstCastleGarden #SissinghurstCastle #Sissinghurst #Roses #Rose #RoseSeason #InTheMayGarden #RosaIspahan #Ispahan #RoseGarden #VitaSackvilleWest #SpringGarden #GardenColour #GardenDesign

Loved visiting 'Gardening Bohemia' at the Garden Museum today. I have always been fascinated by the Bloomsbury Group and it was great to see this exhibition celebrating the female gardening lives of Vita Sackville-West, Virginia Woolf, Ottoline Morrell and Vanessa Bell.

Sissinghurst is a small village in Kent, England. And it is precisely here that Sissinghurst Castle is located, created in the 1930s by Vita Sackville-West, poet and writer, and her husband, Harold Nicolson, author and diplomat. Vita have been the inspiration for the protagonist of Orlando, by her friend and lover Virginia Woolf. But Vita achieved her popularity also as a writer when she began writing as a gardening correspondent for The Observer. It was the magazine that made her garden famous. Conceived as a series of ‘rooms’, each with a different character of color and/or theme and divided by tall hedges, the garden at Sissinghurst Castle is now managed by the National Trust and can be visited. A truly magical place in which to get lost, among the thousand flowers, the suggestive gardens and the most hidden corners. Photo credits: 1. 'No darling, I do not agree about the azaleas. And why is that? First because I don't feel that azaleas are very Sissinghurst in any case. They are Ascot, Sunningdale sort of plants. Not our lovely romantic Saxon, Roman, Tudor Kent. I know you will say, and rightly, that nor are magnolias. But you know what I mean. Anything with the suggestion of suburbia should be excluded. But secondly because I think we want something formal. You have the wall; you have Dionysus; you have the strip of mown grass; you then have the bank; and along the top I want something different from the bank and different from the nuttery. I should rather have a row of stiff Irish yews than a flurry of azaleas. But we may find something. It is a very important site.' Harold to Vita, 22nd July 1947 Guess who won that battle?! Twenty years earlier, in April 1926, Vita wrote to Virginia Woolf from Tehran, raving about the 'torrents of wisteria'. Today, on Sissinghurst's Moat Walk, the spice-and-honey scent of the white wisteria pours into the air, just as the azaleas opposite set fire to it. All uncompromisingly sensational. #sissinghurstcastlegarden #sissinghurst #vitasackvillewest #haroldnicolson #virginiawoolf #azaleas #azalea #wisteria #moatwalk #thymelawn #vitastower #dionysus #nuttery #writersgarden #writershome #writershouse #tehran #teheran #apersianparadise #NTChallenge #wisteriahysteria #kent

It was something of a gardener’s pilgrimage for me to visit @sissinghurstcastlegardennt today and see Vita Sackville-West’s and Harold Nicholson’s paradise they co-created. I’ve long been a fan of Vita’s ethos of “cram, cram, cram, every chink and cranny” planting. Just loved, loved, LOVED every bit of it. And what glories to visit on a gorgeous sunny Sunday in May. Be still my beating heart! We’ve recently acquired the archive of Benedict Nicholson, Vita and Harold’s son, @paulmelloncentr who was editor of the Burlington Magazine, so I’ve been learning about his family and their many connections to art, literature and gardening. One of things I love most about gardening is that there is always something else to learn — another name for a plant, a different way of doing something… In the words of Vita “The most noteworthy thing about gardeners is that they are always optimistic, always enterprising, and never satisfied. They always look forward to doing something better than they have ever done before.” (Vita Sackville-West)Here’s to looking ahead, to the next season, to always having something to do, to holding on to optimism. #vitasackvillewest #benedictnicolson #sissinghurst #whitegarden

The continuous spring rain means we have overflowing flower beds, a lushness that we haven’t had at this time of year in the recent past. There are still plenty of dahlias, salvias and summer annuals patiently, some quite impatiently, waiting to be planted out in the display beds. I had to summon up courage and elbows to be served at a busy London bar last Wednesday, I think the same technique might be useful planting out this week. 😁 #englishgardenstyle #englishgarden #englishgardening #whitewisteria #himalayacalamusfalconeri #mixedborder #vitasackvillewest

So maybe don’t buy a house with a totally destroyed garden that you have to start again from scratch if everything you know about gardening comes from Impressionist paintings and #FrancesHodgsonBurnett's #TheSecretGarden - while yet you have dreams of #CedricMorris chic brown irises and a #VitaSackvilleWest white garden and #OttolineMorrell Italian statuary and topiary and #GustaveCaillebotte nasturtiums - and more 🌱 But, here we are, ever a LONG way from Chelsea (and hurray for chaos gardening being a genuine approach) - knowing that less than three years ago this garden was entirely decked over, and full - and I mean FULL - of rubbish, and bindweed, and nettles. We must have dug out two bathrooms and a kitchen, multiple washing lines, as well as a burnt out shed, and then there was the household rubbish…. Basically, we all, children included, dug and DUG, for over a year. I found the then tiny fig tree under a paving stone; now, espaliered against the back wall of the one layer of decking that we kept (one day, we’ll convert it to paving stones, maybe) it’s in fruit. We’ve got layers of stepped beds before you get to the decking (the first photo is taken from my bathroom window on the first floor) which I haven’t really photographed - but they’re full of plants picked up from the shops at #Sissinghurst and #GreatDixter (my delusions of grandeur continue) and gradually they’re flowering. Then there’s a jasmine over one fence, and #GertrudeJekyll roses climbing over another, and even a lawn, which I can lie on and read. Beyond is the wilderness and the children’s dens before you reach the smugglers’ caves in the cliff, and in and among the various pots are the strawberries that we grew on our Notting Hill balcony, which have finally adjusted to their new home 🍓Disclaimer: I did a lot of digging, but the planting is mainly Andrew ❤️❤️ oh, and we have those Caillebotte nasturtiums… 🧡🧡🧡

Trefusis, Violet [Elsa Schiaparelli]. PIRATES AT PLAY - Inscribed by Violet Trefusis to Elsa Schiaparelli. London: Michael Joseph, 1950. "For Elsa these bourgeois Borgias Violet (tr) (te) 20" Juin 1952" 1st Edition Third Impression in the publisher's orange cloth, gilt titles to the spine. The cloth is aged as seen. The boards are slightly cocked and worn. A few minor notations. What makes this edition unique is the inscription. In 1961, it was donated to the American Library of Paris by Madame Schiaparelli & later removed. The Library label and the original dealer label are still intact. In the back is the original library label. The book is inscribed by Violet Trefusis to the fashion icon Elsa Schiaparelli who was an Italian fashion designer renowned for her innovative and surrealist designs that revolutionized the fashion industry in the early 20th century by creating the house of Schiaparelli in Paris in 1927. Elsa Schiaparelli was a friend of Violet and was a frequent visitor at the Medieval Tower in Saint Loup de Naud, a village 80 kms from Paris, owned by Trefusis. According to her website: "..The wonderful place soon becomes a “must” for Tout-Paris: it is converted into a cultural salon attended by writers painters, politicians (C. de Gaulle, F. Mitterrand), aristocrats, musicians, fashion designers (C. Dior, E.Schiaparelli, P.Balmain), actors, & philosophers. TREFUSIS, Violet. (1893-1972) was a British socialite, author, and member of the Bloomsbury Group, best known for her romantic relationship with the writer Vita Sackville-West which is legendary. Of interest. Violet Trefusis was the daughter of Alice Frederica Keppel, who was a prominent mistress of King Edward. Additionally, Violet Trefusis's lineage connects her to British Royalty through her great-granddaughter, Queen Camilla. #firstedition #signed #violettrefusis #elsaschiaparelli #bloomsbury #elsaschiaparellihautecouture #bookseller #vitasackvillewest #antiquarianbook #liberarycollections #universitylibraries #bookdealers #bibliophile https://www.tbclrarebooks.com/pages/books/33753/violet-trefusis-elsa-schiaparelli/pirates-at-play-inscribed-by-violet-trefusis-to-elsa-schiaparelli

Sissinghurst Castle Garden Home of the famed Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson. A bit of a pilgrimage for LGBTQIA+ gardeners. Vita and Harold were in an open marriage, with Vita being in a great love with Virginia Woolf. Vita and Harold designed the garden in the 1930s. It is set out as a beautiful collection of spaces, the white garden designed to be enjoyed in the evening (as the white petals illuminate under moon light), a kitchen garden, dry Mediterranean garden perennial borders and wild meadows.

Happy Friday! Welcome to a #scholarsnotebook. I’m Paul Mooncie-Dunmall @pepin.gardener I’m delighted to take over Sissinghurst’s Instagram account today. This week we had some special visitors from @bethchattogardens and @bordehillgarden. The topic of interest was bokashi, a composting method we have been successfully trialing here at Sissinghurst for over a year now. Bokashi in its simplest form is a pickling process. Using effective micro-organisms, mixed with molasses and warm water, they multiply over a week and are ready to use. We lay out green waste on a plastic sheet at desired weight/length and when the height is around a foot, we measure out and dilute the mixture and pour on. We repeat this process until it’s at a manageable height and cover it in the rest of the plastic so it is as air tight as possible. You should have a useable product within 6-8 weeks. It’s not an absolute composting method, but it is working for us right now. This method releases very little carbon if any due to being sealed, the fermentation process means that there is no horrible smells and being micro-organisms, it speeds up the composting process. The result is a nutrient-rich soil amendment that can be used to enrich soil and support plant growth. It’s lovely to share experiences and ideas with like minded gardeners and exciting to help others on their journey with this method. There was obviously a cheeky little look around the garden as well and the sun came out for it as well. Thank you so much for coming Beth Chatto Gardens and Borde Hill Garden, we look forward to hearing how your journey with bokashi goes. A wonderful final event in the programme complementing the A Persian Paradise exhibition @sissinghurstcastlegardennt. Antony Wynn, Chair of the Iran Society, Charles Anson, former diplomat in Iran and Sir David Reddaway, also former diplomat in Iran, came to Sissinghurst to give an account of the history of the Bakhtiari tribe, as well as discussing their time in the British Embassy in Iran, being held hostage in a burning building on the first day of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Throughout the talks, an overwhelming love for Iran and Iranian culture shone through. It was most moving when British and Iranian members of the audience shared their own individual reflections and memories of Iran. Harold and Vita's journey with the Bakhtiari tribe shows how important the Bakhtiari were to British interests and more of this personal history on both British and Iranian sides needs to be shared and explored. This exhibition is just the beginning of some really rich research and understanding. Mark Rumary created four themed “rooms” in the garden, planted with #narcissus, Japanese #cherrytrees, #deutzia, hybrid #lilacs #honeysuckle. The stars of the garden have always been the trees including a magnificent 400-year-old #mulberry, five #magnolias and two figs Rumary grew from cuttings taken from #VitaSackvilleWest’s garden at #Sissinghurst Castle. Marks partner Derek Melville, was a classical musician, biographer of Frédéric #Chopin — Rumary clipped a cutting from a Japanese laurel near the composer’s grave in Paris’s #PèreLachaise cemetery that still thrives today. He built a Moorish-style raised #lilypond filled with carp. Inside the potting shed, his waxed-cotton apron hangs by the door. As Olivia explains ‘He fascinated me, in part because of the warmth with which he was spoken about by everyone I met & in part, because of the strange intimacy that went along with repairing his design. To mend the garden meant working initially to understand the pattern he’d intended and then to recover it, stitch by stitch, as an embroiderer might.’ So much more in very interesting article by Benoît Loiseau for NYTimes 📸 Teresa Eng 📸Howard Sooley For @HouseandGardenUK 📸Olivia Laing 📸 Portrait Olivia Laing Sophie Davidson for The Guardian #CCArtistinResidence every week we choose an inspiring artist from different disciplines & explore their personal choice of #interiordesign #exteriordesign in their own home... #artistsrooms #artiststudioslondon

Sizzling Sissinghurst 🌿🌸💚 SCROLL LEFT 🌿🌸💚When you’re out and about in the wilds of Kent the call of Sissinghurst is hard to resist, so we answered that call and enjoyed the garden late in the day, when all others had gone 🌿🌸💚 It’s more difficult trying to negotiate the single track lane that leads to the castle when all others are leaving in the opposite direction, but we knew the reward would be worth it as we had the garden to ourselves (besides we’ve never been ones to go with the flow!)🌿🌸💚 The garden is currently poised between the fecund flush of spring and the full flowering of summer but still manages to look fresh, relaxed and abundant 🌿🌸💚 But it’s not just the garden, its the car park and the whole arrival experience ( #10) that sets the scene and grounds the garden into its landscape setting 🌿🌸💚 As always with @sissinghurstcastlegardennt , until the next time… . #sissinghurstcastle #sissinghurst #gardenphotography #sissinghurstcastlegarden #nationaltrust #gardenview #gardendesign #gardening #vitasackvillewest #garden #gardens #clematis #cowparsley #roses #romance #troyscottsmith #wildgarden #formalgarden #historicgarden #whitegarden #gardenlovers #nationaltrustgardens #kentgardens #nature #naturelovers @nationaltrust @troyscottsmith1 @southeastnt @philipbarnesgardendesign @saffronprentis @pepin.gardener @peter.5field

Letters of Vita Sackville West and Virginia woolf. 1/2 read for the month of May. It is said that Vita Sackville - West used to be a much popular name than Virginia woolf, who is now a Canon in english literature. Sackville-West and Woolf were both married women when they met each other. Only to fall deeply in love, that found voice in their journals and letters. This month I take a deep dive into their queer romance, during times when it wasn't only unpopular but a taboo. #virginiawoolf #vitasackvillewest #queerwomen #literature #literaturequotes #literaturelovers #classicalliterature #literary

“I believe that one ought always to regard a garden in terms of architecture as well as colour……….some plants make round fat bushes, and seem to demand a contrast in a tall sharp plant, say delphiniums, sticking up in a cathedral spire of bright blue amongst the roses…it is all a question of shape. Architectural shape, demanding the pointed thin ones amongst fat rounds, as a minaret rises above the dome of a mosque” Vita Sackville-West #vitasackvillewest #haroldnicolson #historicgarden #lovegardening #gardendesign #dreamgarden #hebe #mixedborder #springgarden #solomonseal #euphorbia #gardenlayers #englishgardendesign #englishgardening #englishgardenstyle

So amazing to see Sissinghurst gardens in person. Caught the tail end of Spring blooms and the beginning of summer. I'd like to go back when the roses start blooming - I hear there are over 300! I didn't know ceanothus could be trained / pruned so neatly. #historicgarden #historicgardens #anemonedecaen #honeywort #hydrangeapetiolaris #ceanothus #ferns #nuttery #artsandcraftsmovement #vitasackvillewest

Bloomsbury inspiration for my bedside table- ‘The Bedside Table’, Edward Le Bas (1904–1966), @brighton_museums. Edward La Bas created a wonderful portrait of Raymond Mortimer, Harold Nicolson’s lover and romantic partner for many years, Mortimer was also good friend of Vita’s. Le Bas also painted Angelica Garnett- daughter of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, and was great friends with Grant and Bell, often staying at their home, @charlestontrust. Le Bas actually posed for Grant for the Berwick Church murals in 1944, tied to an easel for the Crucifixion. For my role at @sissinghurstcastlegardennt and also just because I’m fascinated, I’m starting to map the many queer connections, relationships, communities, artistic/literary collaborations, and friendships of Vita and Harold. #haroldnicolson #vitasackvillewest #edwardlebas #bloomsbury #raymondmortimer #sissinghurst #brightonmuseum #queerhistory #lgbtqia #lgbtqhistory #queerhistory

"... I came home ... On arrival I saw a closed van at the front door. Having long awaited some spare parts to repair the boiler, dreary, yet necessary, I walked round to the back of the van, thinking how quickly utilitarian life returned to oust beauty, and with a sigh prepared to investigate some graceless assortment of ironmongery whose function would be incomprehensible to me. ... Instead, a smiling young man confronted me, saying he did not know if I would be interested, but he had brought these ... 'These' were giant pansies, thousands and thousands of them. The van's dark interior was a cavern of colour. Some royal hand had flung rugs of velvet over the stacks of wooden trays ... I stood amazed. What an imaginative young man, I thought, to hawk this giant strain round the countryside ... When I questioned him, he said, modestly, that he had hoped people would not be able to resist them. He was probably right, and I wish him good luck in his enterprise. As for those whose houses do not lie on his road, a packet of seed should serve the purpose, and by next spring the ground should appear as though spread with the most sumptuous carpet from Isfahan." Vita Sackville-West "The Observer" 9th May, 1948 Even, 21 years after her return from Iran, Vita still had vivid memories of her time hunting the bazaars and carpet merchants of Isfahan and using these colourful images as inspiration for her own garden at Sissinghurst. A Persian Paradise is entering its last couple of weeks and there is one more event to celebrate this period in Harold and Vita's lives. #caturday For you literary types, my beloved Vita is named after the great British author, memoirist, traveler, columnist, and artistic gardener, Vita Sackville-West. She’s a bit of a hero of mine and was the subject of the book (and TV drama) “Portrait of a Marriage,” … and Eileen Atkins’ wonderful play (and later a film) “Vita & Virginia.” I saw the original stage production with Eileen Atkins and Vanessa Redgrave in NYC! [Be still my heart] 🤭 It’s Vita’s love of gardens, plants, and rescuing historic architecture that cemented a place in my heart for her. Imagine my delight, therefore, when, on Tuesday, I found this 1958 hardback collection of her gardening columns in VG+ condition WITH rare dust jacket for $7.98 at a used bookstore in New Mexico! 🙏 There ARE still wonders and treasures to be found in the post-Internet era 😉 And my own Vita clearly approves ❤️🐯 #cats #catsofinstagram #rescuecat #rescuecats #writing #authors #virginiawoolf #vitasackvillewest #eileenatkins #literature #gardens #gardening #rescuecatsrock #writers

Other gardens reveal their beauty slowly, #sissinghurst punches you in the face, throws you into a ditch and bulldozes over 🙃 Seriously though, this #garden is a complete 🤯, even without the celebrated literary connection to #vitasackvillewest. Especially with that thing in the sky I almost forgot about 😆☀️😎

I had the most fabulous conversations with the very passionate volunteers and staff at @monkshousent yesterday and met there very talented artist in residence @tobysmith.btn who was busy sketching some of the lovely old trees in the garden and Virginia’s writing shed. When a group of us were discussing the National Trust I mentioned @sissinghurstcastlegardennt and he very kindly showed me the artworks he had created there. So great to see, he said I could take photos of them and then ended up giving me them, which I never expected. Now I need to frame them and hang the three of them on my walls. So kind and I’m so lucky to have them. #monkshouse #virginiawoolf #sissinghurst #vitasackvillewest

Happy Friday! Welcome to a #scholarsnotebook. I’m Paul Mooncie-Dunmall @pepin.gardener and I’m delighted to take over Sissinghurst’s Instagram account today. I was welcomed back to Sissinghurst by an eerie mist, suspended over the garden. Excited to see how far everything had come on since being away, I set out with the rest of the team to take in the mystical morning and explore what I had missed. The cottage garden is filling out nicely as the wallflowers fade and other friends take over. Verbascum, Euphorbia and Thalictrum were covered in dewy drops and sparkled as the sun started to burn through. If you haven’t been this year, it’s perfect timing for the nuttery and meadows. Both are meditative spaces giving you the room to breathe after the intensity of the rest of the garden. The dappled shade from the hazels makes Ferns and Smyrnium zing, with erect Paris polyphylla waiting in the wings to flower next. Having been away, I’ve had a lot to catch up on in the office, so being out in the garden has been fleeting, which is unfortunate. Two days of management training, specifically focused on looking after our amazing volunteers, has kept me entertained for the rest of this week. It’s not too long until our volunteer’s week here at Sissinghurst and I’ll be doing a post devoted to the incredible work that they do. It’s good to be back and already feels like I’ve never been away. Love letters of Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackcille-West There’s nothing I love more than sapphics showering each other with love in the form of beautifully crafted love letters <3 These letters are filled with breathtaking expressions of passion and adoration between two extremely talented writers. Reading these felt like such an honour, made all the more rewarding and special by Alison Bechdel’s introductory chapter, and I was amazed by how much they resonated with me and my own experiences almost a century after they were initially exchanged! This was another one I had the joy of reading predominantly in the sun now that summer is finally on its way!!! ••• #virginiawoolf #vitasackvillewest #virginiawoolfquotes #vitasackvillewestquote #loveletters #sapphiclove #sapphicliterature #queerliterature #sapphicreader #queerbooks #queerreads #queerreader #bookstagram #bookreview #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreviewer #recentread #picnicreading #summerreading #springtbr #smallbookstagram #smallbookstagrammer
