Coastal wood fern (Dryopteris arguta), an associate species of the dry, open, oak woodland, savanna, and prairie habitats. Pals around with poison oak, garry oak, madrone, oceanspray, tall Oregon grape, oval-leaved viburnum, baldhip rose, and orange honeysuckle, to name a few. Pretty much my dream habitat and one that is quickly diminishing. It takes all of us to protect these areas, practice native plant conservation in our yards and local areas, support local native plant growers, and again, actively seek to protect the few remnant oak, savanna, and prairie remnants however way and whatever means we can! The apple trees are going bananas this year. And with them, the wild bees. I was a bit surprised to see so many nomad bees (gökbi), which are one of my favourites with their crazy alien eyes and neon red antennae. The May garden cloaked in green, wild and magical. 1 - Josh watching the muntjac & roe deer from the bottom of the garden. This week we saw both at the same time. 2 - The view back to the cabin. One day this will be the vegetable garden, but for now it's nettles & wild parsnips 5 & 6 - There's not loads in the way of flowers, just a few delicate jewels, whilst the roses start to bloom. Ethereal self seeded aquilegias and white bleeding hearts. 7 - My favourite thing in the garden, a stunning damselfly with a metallic blue body & copper wings! - I think he's called 'Beautiful Demoiselle'

Seep monkeyflower (Erythranthe guttata) was one of the first rain garden perennials I bought back when EMSWCD used to host their annual native plant sales at Echo Valley Natives. I still remember the wonder I felt when the world of native plant gardening opened up to me. It started with seeing a backyard habitat sign in a front yard, and what I saw in their gardening practices resonated for me. Then it was someone at Portland Nursery suggesting I try a locally native species based on what I said I was looking for, which was a shrub that could handle my backyard clay soil. That was the day I bought my first Pacific ninebark (Physocarpus capitatus), still with me fifteen years later. Once the seeds were planted, there was no going back for me. The small lined pond has a trough nearby, as I put it there a few years ago when there was a drought, so water for animals.The water can also, then release any chlorine, before topping up the pond.I tried to move it, but found loads of young frogs and other insects using it as a refuge to hide under.Everything living, needs a place to retreat to and recuperate, away from any input or interference Wildplants/herbs have thrived in places I didn't plan to put them, but if I can't walk along the path, that's tough...I far more enjoy seeing them thrive... Sie wächst am unteren Teil des Berges und ist von Frühling bis Herbst wie eine Sonne die uns entgegen leuchtet. These delicate flowers are currently blooming in my gardens, & look almost like the "Snowdrops" that faded away a few weeks ago ❄️ These are later-blooming "Summer snowflakes" or "Loddon Lilies", recognizable by the tiny green dots along the bottom edge of each bell-shaped flower 🔔 At this time of year, I love wandering through our almost #wildgardens & seeing what new plant has popped up overnight... because the birds, chipmunks, wild bunnies, and other creatures often "plant" the seeds of what they've eaten in our gardens 😉 One year, we ended up with a 7' tall Valerian plant that was absolutely gorgeous 🌿 It's still a bit too chilly for #pleinairpainting for me, because my #crps #raredisease makes my right hand & arm super-sensitive to cold, so I'm really looking forward to getting out & sketching or painting these flowers in situ! #naturelovers #gardendesign #artdespitepain #paintinginpain #paintingwithpain #chronicpainawareness

The Burnet Rose, (Rosa spinosissima) is the first wild rose to flower in the gardens. It suckers to form dense patches and most years Long-tailed Tits have nested deep inside the thorny branches. The scent is beautiful and really hangs in the air all around. Happy Monday, friends! 👋 If you live in my local area (Foxboro, MA, and the surrounding towns), I'm asking for your help today: What would be good places to hold a book launch party for Wild Gardens? I've started reaching out to the "venues" on my list of options, and I'm running into obstacles. In short, it may not be possible to hold the launch party at the closest indie bookstore or the two closest libraries for various reasons (and not because they're booked up for September). 😕 I have another bookstore on my list of places to contact. In the meantime, if you live in or around Foxboro, MA (like Walpole, Sharon, Mansfield, Easton, Canton, Wrentham, Norfolk, Plainville, or the Attleboros), do you know of other places you'd recommend? It was Mothers Day in Australia yesterday so I would like to wish all those Mothers out there so much happiness and joy , peace and strength to do one of the hardest jobs in the world but one that we would never wish to change ( except on a few days 😂) As it was my day to chose what to do, where to go and what to eat , I chose a level 5 hike in the beautiful Glass House Mountains , Sunshine Coast. These ‘volcanic plug’ mountains are over 25 million years old and sacred to the Kabi Kabi people. Later we had a mix of salads , Haloumi, Feta and Hummous followed by the Irish film Dare To Be Wild which is about the true story of Mary Reynolds, who won a place to compete in the Chelsea Flower Show with her ‘wild ‘ garden. The kids also gave me a lovely gift of Camel products to keep my hands lovely and smooth … exactly what I needed . These woods were garlic-scented which (combined with the sight of those fields of wild garlic) was kind of magical. It reminded me of a passage from my favourite novel in which the protagonist gets stuck on an island where everything is edible, but obviously that was not the case in these real life woods, although one could argue that everything is edible with some things only being edible once... ✨ Luckily I had a pizza not too long after this walk! Another fortunate thing was that this was my first day of feeling somewhat okay after being sick for most days of last week... Qotd: what's your favourite memory associated with a woodland stroll? May 12th, 2024 For the past 12 years this beautiful and zany ‘Dr. Zeus’ looking Spurge (Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii) has been completely undaunted by 2ft deep snow falls, winter cold snaps that often reach -8 celsius, and erratic temperatures that within hours can fluctuate by up to 10 degrees. It has also withstood Salt Spring Island’s annual four months of searing summer drought. This is one tough Mediterranean plant. After I edged each garden bed with large rocks and spread 4 inches of gravel mulch, it just took one Spurge plant to self seed into all the nooks and crannies. I’ve also dug up some of these seedlings and transplanted them around the gardens. The deer never touch this particular Euphorbia, whereas they have happily eaten other Euphorbias I’ve tried to grow. Starting in early March and continuing up to June these rich chartreuse green flower heads bloom continuously. The flowers then fade into a pleasing toffee colour. The stems are cut back in July and the plant immediately sends up new grey-green shoots, each subshrub filling out into small bushy mounds. Few plants look good year round. Frisch, fröhlich, vielfältig, frei, voller Leben, wild, kreativ und vieles mehr ist so ein Naturgarten. Hier kann man auch einfach mal wunderbar faul sein und gleichzeitig unfassbar viele Insekten, Säugetiere, Vögel und Pflanzen beobachten und genießen. Jedes Jahr sieht der Garten etwas anders aus, jedes Jahr entwickelt ihn die Natur etwas neuartig und man muss einzig und allein ein paar Pflanzen im Zaum halten, die die gewünschte Vielfalt buchstäblich überwuchern würden. Von den vielen Wildpflanzen kann man leben und die heilende Wirkung nutzen. Für all die Tiere ist es ein kleines Paradies, ein Naturschutzgebiet neben den vielen lebensfeindlichen englischen Gärtnern und Schotterwüsten, in denen das einzige Geräusch das der Rasenmäher und Sprinkleranlagen ist. Ja, die braucht man in so einem naturnahen Garten bzw. in einem Naturgarten nicht. Die Pflanzen wachsen dort, wo es ihnen gut geht und heimische Wildpflanzen, die in der eigenen Region vorkommen, kommen mit dem heimischen Klima bestens zurecht. Kein Gießen, kein ständiges Mähen - es tut so gut und all den Tieren auch. Durch die Vielfalt, durch das natürliche Gleichgewicht, hat man keinen Stress mit all den ach so bösen 👿 Läusen oder anderem Getier und Krankheiten. Alles gehört dazu, alles hat seinen Sinn.
