I'm drawn to the Yew Corner, where the gentle stems of herb robert begin to climb up the narrow dark green branches, its tiny pink flowers sitting well with the hardy geraniums that grow beneath. Behind, on the wall, toadflax loops itself through the miniature climbing rose and ivy, decorating any bare space with its pale lilac flowers and pretty scalloped leaves. I've planted these purposely. Something I wouldn't have thought of doing in the past. The quiet attraction of these wildflowers appeals more each year. I find myself looking up and reading about weeds more than cultivated plants. Maybe it's because I live in a city, needing the rambling wildness of weeds to offset the brick and tarmac that surrounds me. Nature walks influence me. Nature itself influences me. Creating habitats in this tiny garden where I sit and watch the bees whilst others pressure wash and barbecue. I barely use the car, walking everywhere. I notice more. Maybe I live in too small a world; perhaps I'm in danger of becoming narrow-minded.. Except it doesn't feel that way. More like seeing worlds within worlds. The more I look, the more I see. The wilder the garden, the better I like it. I like this process. Where it's leading, how it feels. It feels right. I admire a Herb Robert, they’re pretty but tough, equally at home in rural and urban. You get them on the Adlington Pollinator Project, but this shot I took in Trinity Walk, Liverpool near the Islington dual carriageway and nearby housing and industrial warehouses, a little area that wasn’t too tidied up and mown by the council. Geraniums are well known for the variety in lovely scents and hues of their flowers and foliage. The variety we are focusing on today is well known for its scent, but in a much different way than the ones you may choose to put in your hanging baskets. Today's Weedy Wednesday focus is on the plant "Geranium robertianum". This weed is commonly referred to as Stinky Bob or Herb Robert. It's foliage emits a foul smell which is where this plant gets its unfortunate name! You can find these geraniums popping up in shaded understory spaces beginning mid spring through autumn. It shares a similar leaf shape to our native bleeding hearts, so be careful not to pull them too early if you're unsure. Once these begin to flower you can be certain it is not a bleeding heart. These Geraniums have small flowers with 5 pink petals, red (hairy) stems, and can grow up to 20" high. While these Geraniums are small and delicate, they spread rapidly by seed and become highly competitive with other understory plants. They will quickly crowd out and highly reduce other flora populations. The seeds form in little capsules formed once the flower has completed its bloom cycle. Once these capsules dry, the seeds are ejected several feet away! Fortunately, this weed is shallowly rooted and very easy to pull out of the ground with just your hands. I don't do cut flowers, there's something weird about getting something beautiful lopping off its head to stick in a vase and watch it die. Because of my weirdness around this Steve rarely bought me a bunch of flowers, in the 29 years we were annoying each other I think he only bought me two. One of those was where the white rose with silver glitter tipped petals importance was from and had to be included in his wreath. He went and did the Xmas shop one year and came into the living room with something behind his back "I know you don't like cut flowers, but I saw this bunch and it just reminded me of you" it was a mix of flowers but the white glitter tipped roses were the thing which caught his eye. Anyhow, still not gonna stop me swiping table decorations at events I support! This vase of flowers were accidents while weeding so I saved them.
