For myself as a performer and an educator, this means always finding new avenues for learning and sharing in order to create transformative experiences for myself and for those with whom I come into contact. As a performer, this means taking on challenging repertoire in a variety of styles and continuing to add to the more than two dozen languages in which I have sung—currently working on Finnish for the upcoming concert at Benaroya Hall on June 1. As an educator, this means facilitating healthy, independent, adaptable vocalist-performers—valuing each individual’s identity and interests and guiding them to new potential choices and ease, which enables them to allow their own voice and ways of relating to the world to blossom. We must do better. “The image on this card, the 8 of Arrows from the Brady Tarot, depicts a form of behavior from blue jays known as “mobbing.” While blue jays are a cultural symbol of happiness in many countries, mobbing shows a darker, aggressive side. Bands of jays will attack a larger bird, often a predator. The red- tailed hawk in the picture might go after a single jay, but when they come as a group the hawk sits helplessly— or rather, it believes itself helpless. The Cherokee arrows stuck more or less randomly in the branch symbolize the internal passivity and inability to act. Some may see this card as victims ganging together to fight back against an attacker. Others may see the opposite, an isolated figure bullied by a group of tormentors. Oppression shows an inner belief in your own helplessness. The first step to freedom is to recognize that weakness does not correspond to reality. A handsome red hartebeest overlooking the vast green scrublands of the Eastern Cape. Despite looking somewhat ungainly as far as antelopes go, hartebeests are extremely fast runners, and can reach speeds of up to 65 km/h and maintain this over long distances. Swimming in CRA’TAE CARPETS 🔔💙 Purpurescent perfection! A woodland wonder, enchanting and magical in droves blanketing forest floors; harebells, cuckoo’s boots, granfer giggles and witches’ thimbles - no matter the name, iconic dangling bluebells indicate that you’re standing in a rare and special habitat. A habitat so exquisitely old that many thought fairies once resided there, which is not surprising when you step foot in one ✨🥾 They might not be fairies, but visiting bees come pretty close as they feed on the nectar. However, bee can ‘steal’ from the ‘bells by biting a hole in the bottom of the flowers, reaching the nectar tonic without the need to pollinate the flower. Cheeky buggers 🐝 Wanted to catch the last gasp of life of these flowers and doing something different when photographing them.
