Nature photography is not only about photographing the beautiful, but also the less pleasant things that happen to nature. In Svalbard, around half of the arctic foxes now have fur lice. This could have major consequences for the arctic fox population, not only on Svalbard, but also elsewhere in the Arctic. The fur lice was first discovered on Svalbard in 2019, but has since increased at a high pace. In 2022, a full 76 per cent of the approximately 200 foxes that were examined were infected with fur lice. The parasite particularly targets the head, neck and back. There it bites through the skin to suck blood. The lice parasite is so troublesome for the fox that it scratches the affected areas so intensely that it loses its fur and risks freezing to death. ***TRIGGER WARNING EATING DISORDER*** Im beyond thrilled with my Gold this month, I'm someone who has suffered from binge eating disorder most of my life, I got to work with Renia a year ago before she was admitted into a feeding clinic, she has spent almost that entire year in and out of the clinic, she came to me a day after her discharge and is on the road to her recovery, but this image depicts that her anorexia will always be with her, it will always be that side of her, Renia doesn't look like either of these images at the moment, she is somewhere in the middle, I edited her to look more poorly on one side and a more healthy in the other, this is where she was and where she would like to be eventually. Just back from London where I had the honour to be Chair of photography qualifications and print finals at the @thesocietyofphotographers international photography convention in London. Congratulations to all those amazing photographers who gained their photographic qualifications and awards in their designated genre, from commercial photographers, fashion, portrait to weddings and to all the judges and print handlers who made it run so smoothly. I was so shocked to be announced as the WINNER for the in camera artistry category at the @thesocietyofphotographers awards ceremony. I didn’t think that I would stand a chance. It’s unfortunate that we could not attend the event, and I am so grateful that my image has been recognised. It’s an image that is very close to my heart. It marks the beginning of understanding who I am, and the journey of acceptance and discovery. It also marks the start of an incredible project, featuring an incredible group of individuals who are on the same journey. So Wednesday I watch my first print entry into @thesocietyofphotographers 20x16" print competition. I took an immense thrill and satisfaction from the judges wonderful thoughts, comments and critique about my image. Yesterday a friend messaged me saying that the image had made it to the finals. I visited and saw my image and recieved wonderful feedback from some of the judges. So yesterday was my Masterclass - “ Breaking the fifth wall” Wow - thank you to everyone who came, and made my class a success, I had feared tumble weeds.. If this last week is anything to go by then 2024 is going to disappear in a flash. Time is flying this January and, with a very busy month ahead, I'm hard at work. Next week sees me at @thesocietyofphotographers convention in London where I’ll be helping out on the @lightbluesoftware stand Before then I have a busy weekend of photography and a ton of catching up to do in the office. I love this time of year as all the opportunities stretch out ahead of me and watching the diary fill up is a joy, one of my favourite clients booked in their summer shoot yesterday and I can’t wait to see them in August for what will be our seventh photo shoot together. As 2023 draws to a close, I’m reflecting on this last year and what’s happened. My son was hit while driving by a drunk driver, and his life is changed for ever. But he is still here ❤️ I’m involved with charity work within my local town which while a lot of work is massively rewarding. I’m training Mini Rugby, which again is massively rewarding. Passed my fellowship with the Societies with a cosplay panel ❤️ I have also managed to secure a class at The Societies convention for 2024, as well as my first year as a judge after two years as a print handler. It’s been a manic year to say the least, and I often wonder how the hell I got here as well as working full time in my own business 😳 I haven’t photographed as much as I wanted, but I’m still proud that I was one of the first to keep bringing cosplay and what it represents to international photography competitions. I want to do more, I want to work with more amazing cosplayers, I want to create more unique art with other truly amazing artists. So here is to 2024, let’s hope it’s less wet 🤣 and we all keep on achieving. I am totally gobsmacked. I was going to post about how 4 of my images with the Society of Photographers had been upgraded to Gold awards, however, this has now been trumped. Late last week I got the wonderful news that 3, yes 3 of my images have been nominated by their panel of judges for the award of ‘Photographer of The Year 2023’. This will be in the Wild Animals and 2 in the Landscape category. This year Judges nominated between 3 and 5 images in each category, and out of these images there will be ONE WINNER. I now need to wait until the Presentation Evening in January to find out how I did. Wow. Just wow. Being nominated is wonderful as it stands. I received a "Judges Choice Award", a "Highly Commended Award" and a "Commented Award" in @thesocietyofphotographers' competition "SINWP Bird Photographer of the Year 2023". The picture of the frozen European shag (Gulosus aristotelis) was taken in a blizzard on Hornøya island outside Vardø. The King eider (Somateria spectabilis) was photographed in the harbor in Vadsø (Many thanks to @riestobjarne for good company and for letting me borrow the floating photohide). The picture of the Svalbard Rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta hyperborea) was taken just outside Longyearbyen. All the photos were taken on phototrips with @cecilie.stuedal, who also won two prizes in the same photo competition. Congratulations!
