Strata and options: when I look at this photo, in addition to reveling in the beauty of the landscape, I see an illustration of the way that I work with my clients – in layers. We focus on one aspect at a time, and then we play with another approach or element; this allows time for each idea to take root, and *insieme* create the complete picture. For example, while working with a choir yesterday, we experienced our lower back ribs, sides of the middle portion of the ribs, and the upper ribs in front, feeling the quality of breathing with each and then the resulting vocal sound. This season of renewal reminds us that we, too, can change and grow. For myself as a performer and an educator, this means always finding new avenues for learning and sharing in order to create transformative experiences for myself and for those with whom I come into contact. As a performer, this means taking on challenging repertoire in a variety of styles and continuing to add to the more than two dozen languages in which I have sung—currently working on Finnish for the upcoming concert at Benaroya Hall on June 1. As an educator, this means facilitating healthy, independent, adaptable vocalist-performers—valuing each individual’s identity and interests and guiding them to new potential choices and ease, which enables them to allow their own voice and ways of relating to the world to blossom. Have you been told you’re wrong when you’re right? Made to believe you’re wrong Have you been made to lose sight of the actual the factual the truth? Have you been confused? If these words do not resonate with you, then you are fortunate. For many of us, either politically or personally, or both, these types of situations have permeated our existence. In addition to larger issues of well-being that desperately need to be addressed in our political, legal, healthcare, and financial systems, unfortunately the experiences referenced above also have been a part of pedagogy. People frequently come to me having been manipulated by teachers, coaches, conductors, etc. who care more about themselves than the singers or who have no idea how to self-regulate their reactions; having been told a bunch of things that do not correspond to reality, yet having spent years forcing themselves to do things that are uncomfortable and reinforce tension; and/or being unable to discern what actually is happening and what they can do to change that. The experiences that take place in my studio are like the sunlight in this photo: illuminating. We get to the bottom of what has been taking place by seeing clearly what has been, then by envisioning and embodying the distinct possibilities that could exist instead. Building attainable & sustainable goals 💪 🌟 Attainable: Begin your fitness journey by starting small. If your goal is to achieve 10,000 steps per day, don’t overwhelm yourself. Instead, start by increasing your daily step count by just 1,000 steps. This could be as simple as taking a 10-minute walk around your neighborhood. By setting achievable mini-goals, you’ll build momentum and confidence to reach your ultimate target. 🌱 Sustainable: Sustainability is key to long-term success. Flexibility in teaching➡Epiphanies: A client showed up for their lesson, feeling badly about not having had time to practice at all and concerned about upcoming deadlines. We took the opportunity to observe how they taught themselves unfamiliar music, and we both learned a great deal about aspects of their process that were affecting overall vocal technique! – It turns out that they were reading through brand new music by plunking through it while singing at the same time, and this was leading to them holding their air and squeezing their onsets, due to uncertainty about what was coming next. They also were tackling a whole piece without a break, which was too much at once. Instead, we tried having them play through a single phrase at a time, once while simply listening, and often a second time while audiating (imagining the singing); they next played along while singing aloud, and ALL of the tension in their sound was gone. *Separating out skills, motor imagery (dynamic neurocognitive imagery), + chunking = success!* It brought both of us joy that we turned what could have been a negative experience into an extremely productive one that will have a profound impact on all future learning and technique. #buildingsustainablehabits #comeasyouare #redmond #bellevue #kirkland #issaquah #sammamish #mercerisland #bothell #seattle #virtual #inperson #wellbeing #flexibility #growth #DrMastrian #voice #voiceteacher #breathingwithease #singingwithease #soundingthevoicewithin

Action = Motivation 💪 I've been hearing a lot of people lately telling me they don't feel motivated to exercise, or are lacking motivation. Unfortunately you're not always going to feel motivated to exercise, or eat better, etc. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to just get started, as action creates motivation. - Put on your workout clothes - Pack your gym bag - Listen to your favourite music Playlist - Start with a 5 minute walk or warm up - Aim for a 10 minute workout - Etc. Start with something, no matter how small. Odds are you'll get started and then continue. If not you still did something, which is better than nothing. Tomorrow is a new day. You don't have to be perfect! Blue shorts are today. Pink top is a few years ago. I thought it was important to show me sucking it in the best I could vs me relaxed. I've mentioned before and it's obvious I carry a lot of my fat in my stomach. I don't like it but I also know I can not target where I lose fat first. I'm not 100% sure what I weighed when I had the pink top and black shorts but I know I wasn't trying as hard. It was during Covid. I didn't feel as good as I do now for the most part. 5 signs your sleep habits might not be working for you 😴 ➡️ Your mind is foggy. What we experience and learn gets stored in our memory while we sleep. Interference with this process causes: - Reduced alertness and concentration - Confusion - Impaired Judgment - Forgetfulness ➡️ You're getting sick a lot. Wellness and Social Media 💻 It's crazy how much social media has evolved over the past 5-10+ years! It definitely influences alot of people lives, and has become a major tool for alot of influencers and business owners. While social media can be a good thing and can be very helpful - it can also affect us very negatively in regards to our overall Wellness. It's so easy to get wrapped up in what's happening on social media, you start scrolling through social media and get caught up in a news story, drama, endless scrolling, etc. before you know it a couple hours have gone by, which can end up being very unproductive. But also what we see, hear or read on social media can affect our mood and thoughts in a negative way. Some simple things you can do to help keep things positive, and just help with your overall Wellness, are: ✨️ Limit your time on Social Media / set a timer. ✨️ Delete, Unfollow or Block People / Pages / Accounts that affect you in a negative way or make you feel upset. ✨️ Follow People / Pages / Accounts that are positive and uplift you. ✨️ Turn off your notifications. ✨️ Try not to go on social media first thing in the morning, or right before bed. ✨️ Create an intention or purpose for going on social media (connect with a friends/family, for promoting work, etc.) ✨️ Take a break. ✨️ Etc. Overall just be mindful of your social media habits. Quick & Easy Snacks 🥗 Ingredients: • 2-3 Mini Cucumbers • 1-2 Tbsp of Cottage Cheese • 1 tsp of Ranch Seasoning Steps: 1. Cut Mini Cucumbers into slices and place in container or bowl. 2. 1st Incentive Trip of the year - Nagano At this time, I'm supposed to be at the airport ready to fly off soon. With both heavy heart and joyful heart, I forgo the trip due to the quake in Japan. Heavy heart because I worked very hard for it and the extra miles to achieve the extra subsidy. My hub was not happy if I were to proceed. I gave up 2 seats to Sanya previously because my mum just passed on then. This is the 2nd time. Joyful heart because he is very concerned of my safety to the extend he is willing to compensate me the whole trip. I can see that he had been monitoring the situation since the day of the quake. I had been in a dilemma as I feel he is overly paranoid and it should be fine but at the back, I was also worried the what ifs and only cancelled the Air tic ytrday. Heartwarming to have my church friends and friends who texted me to show concern and pray for me. You know who you are. The whole incident has led me to new revelation. 1. Who really cares 2. My habit stacking journey 📝 Currently I am stacking 3 habits: steps + pull-ups + squats Here is how it started: Month 1 - November 2023: Steps Challenge 🚶‍♂️ 🏁 Goal: 15,000 steps daily 👟 November marked the beginning of my habit-stacking journey. Month 2 - December 2023: Pull-up Challenge 💪 🏋️‍♂️ Goal: 20 pull-ups (plus variations) daily 💥 In addition to my previous steps challenge, I shifted gears to target upper body strength. Month 3 - January 2024: Squat Challenge 🍑 🏋️‍♀️ Goal: 50 squats daily for 2 weeks 🔥 Starting the new year with a burner! January is all about sculpting those glutes, in addition to my steps and pull-up goals. Lesson learned from today's badminton game It is our yearly ritual to cycle on 1st day of new year. However, it has been raining whole day. I was disappointed and I told hub that this year we didn't keep to the ritual. Frozen meals have been a lifesaver for us lately for supper! 🍲 While it is better if you can make meals homemade, sometimes that just isn't plausible.  Some tips when choosing frozen meals:  • Aim for better options (e.g whole grains, lean protein, lots of fruits & veggies, etc.)  • Aim for a well-balanced meal (protein, carbs, fat)  • Check out your local shops or family owned shops for more "homemade" options.  • Take a look at the ingredients list (try to moderate sodium/sugar/etc.)  • Try to look for meals with a good amount of fiber.  • Add in sides or fill in nutritional gaps- if needed, you can always add in more veggies for fiber, add in protein if you got more of a side dish, etc.  • Find what works for you, your budget and your lifestyle.  Life gets busy, not everyone has time to meal prep- which is okay! Frozen meals can be a great option, and something that you can incorporate into your routine. Just always aim for better options and aim for balance. If you always fall off the “wagon” when it comes to hitting goals and reaching targets whether it’s weight loss, exercise, building a new habit of any kind then TRUTH BOMB 💣 ….. you are probably missing one vital ingredient … CONSISTENCY 👊🏼 Doing stuff on repeat is the simplest way to make the process positive, get results and take the stress out of it. If you want to lose weight then eat a salad every day for lunch or drink water every time you would normally have a soda. If you want to make exercise a habit then stick to a time and make it a daily routine and then just do it on repeat. If you want to see RESULTS and get stronger then follow a programme for at least a year! If you want more energy then get to bed earlier, drink more water, switch off the mobile phone more & create a routine that you follow daily! When it comes to building healthy habits that are sustainable for your future health and wellness this is goldmine Often the reason people give up, lose motivation or end up throwing the towel in on the journey is they overcomplicate it. This stuff works if you do it on REPEAT 🔁 So being consistent is KEY 🔑 Not going down the rabbit hole of trying other ways or doing it differently for a few days just stick to the plan you originally made. For example if your goal is to get more hydrated and increase your water intake set some new habits around how to do this like 1. Having water bottles at different places as a reminder (office, car, bag, bedside table) 2. Make a new rule of drinking a glass of water before and after eating ANYTHING 3. Measure your water intake and mark it off on your phone or diary to keep track 4 Have a hot water and lemon 🍋 in the morning before your first tea or coffee. Keep doing these things consistently and by the end of one week you’ll start to see significant benefits. Then you’ll feel more motivated to keep going. Then the habit will begin to form. This is a really powerful tool for triggering that change process to begin. I like to look back to 10 years ago and think where I am now and then imagine where I’d like to be in 10 years from now. Me time is such an important habit for us to factor in to our busy lives. Investing time in YOU! Whether it’s in total peace or more connecting with what brings you joy and taking moments to do something JUST FOR YOU. Reading a book quietly Sitting and watching the world go by Meditating 🧘‍♂️ Having a bubble bath 🛀 Lying on your bed mid day and taking a nap 💤 Listening to music and switching off from everyone These are all examples of ME TIME Sitting with ourself is not only good for the body and mind to slow down but it allows us to stop and sit with our feelings which is so important. Often this is when we recognise or notice things in our life we need to change or address. The constant rat race takes its toll otherwise and we get caught up in a cycle of non stop stress and never get off that hamster treadmill. Empathy and compassion are necessary to garner results but this doesn’t mean you should cut yourself slack no matter what. Many people favor one side - complete empathy (pulling back and giving themselves a break) or pushing forward at all costs. There should be some balance between the two. You can hold yourself to a high standard and simultaneously do so with compassion. This is where reflecting on YOUR top priorities is crucial, as it’s important to understand that these vary from person to person, and they will also change depending on the unique season of life that you’re in (meaning the systems or habits that were important in achieving your goals last week, month or year might look different today). If you can figure out what your top priorities are, then you can give yourself a little more tough love when it comes to those habits and give yourself a little more slack when it comes to the things that are lower on the totem pole. For example, if meal prep isn’t a consistent routine for you yet, what can you change to make it easier? Can you order your groceries online to eliminate the added step of spending 30 minutes of your day at the store? Can you schedule the meal prep time into your week to hold you accountable to executing the habit? Can you use a meal prep service on the weeks that time is a limited resource for you? Is pre-logging your meals helping you hit your macronutrient goals? If so, does it reduce stress to do it the night before, or the morning of? What helps you stay more consistent? If you’re struggling with stress management, start with making the habit so easy you can’t say no, like a few 5 minute breaks during the work day. If that works for you, how did you make it stick? If not, where can you schedule the stress management breaks to make them better suit your lifestyle? You can use this type of reflection on all of your habits to brainstorm ways to build the habits you are still struggling with. Set yourself up for success ‼️ You can do this at any time, but since it's spring cleaning time- when was the last time you cleaned up your kitchen❓️ Not physically like with a cloth, but when was the last time you took inventory of food you have, and organized your kitchen❓️ One thing that has helped me stay on track with my nutrition and helps me to continually make better choices, is having my kitchen cleaned up and organized. • Clean out your fridge, cupboards, etc. - Rearrange, and organize. • Always try to have those "Eat more" foods front and center - so they are easily accessible and convenient. • Try to keep those "Eat less" foods out of the house OR tucked away in a hard to see/reach place and inconvenient. So you have to work to get to those foods. Most of the time, you will see one of those "Eat more" food options and opt out for that instead. - Having a good kitchen set up helps you make better choices with ease. [See pictures for full spectrum - Eat More, Eat Some, Eat Less foods] You can also clean up and organize all of your kitchen appliances/equipment so you know exactly what you have, and maybe try something new! 😊 When you have a structured system and everything is organized, it makes things a whole lot easier to manage, as everything is ready to go! I'm saying goodbye to my FitBit (for now) 👋👋 For those of you that know me, know I have worn my FitBit faithfully EVERY DAY, for atleast 6 years! I like seeing the numbers and I like seeing the data - for tracking my Fitness, Nutrition, Sleep, etc. But at a certain point, tracking can become obsessive - which can have a negative effect on your mental health. So I'm taking a step away from numbers and data for a while and tracking my progress in a different way - journaling and just tuning into how I'm feeling, physically and mentally. Depending on your goals - using numbers and data can be a great way to track your progress. But make sure that it's not affecting you a negative way. As there are other ways that you can track your progress, that can be more positive for your mental health.
