When I went to Thailand, I was lucky enough to train at a fighters gym, nothing touristy about this place. Owned by a multiple Lumpinee Champion who had over 200 career fights. Where the trainers fought almost every night and would come in with black eyes the next day to hold pads for you. Weekly fights in a ring that was put up 2 hours before fight night where a rival gym would bring their best fighters to compete. There’s a certain grit involved with training in a gym with a tin roof in intense heat surrounded by heavy hitters from around the world. It is an experience I will never forget. This is one of many experiences I’ve had in my journey. I’ve been able to train and represent some extraordinary gyms including The WAT (NYC), Son of Siam, Rawai Muay Thai (Thailand), ETC Denver, Gracie Ohio etc… I have picked up a wealth of knowledge over the years and I bring all of these experiences together for you in my new signature program for people over 40. I've been meaning to do this one for awhile. After supplementing with AKG and feeling the mind-racing, anxiety-provoking effects of excess glutamate, I was reminded how important it is to monitor for signs of excess glutamate exposure in those I work with. This could be due to: genetic predispositions, excess glutamate consumption in the diet, supplements that are increasing glutamate and/or nutrient deficiencies preventing glutamate clearance. I use a combination of investigating polygenic risk scores and individual risk variants when determining genetic causes of glutamate imbalance. A few weeks ago, I made a post about if you should count macros or not, but let’s now dive into this a little bit deeper. While I am a firm believer in macros for efficient body composition changes and have many of my clients track them, it’s not the only way to achieve your goals. We could also utilize any one of (or a combo of) the following: The plate method – Half a plate of non-starchy veggies, quarter plate of protein, quarter plate of complex carbohydrates Hand portions – These would be unique to your nutritional needs, but instead of tracking macros, you would track how many palms of protein, fists of veggies, and thumbs of fat you were eating. It brings awareness to your portions, but you don’t have to worry about lugging around a food scale everywhere you go. “Eat what you want, add what you need” - In this option, you would focus on adding nutrient dense foods (such as fruits, veggies, healthy fats, protein, etc) to your diet instead of prioritizing what needs to be removed. Eat to 80% full – This one requires individuals to be a little bit more in tune with hunger cues and eat mindfully Chew each bite 20 times – Slowing down and giving yourself time to process the fact that you’re eating The absolute most important thing about getting into a calorie deficit is that we do it in a way you’re able to sustain! Another PPSC takeaway: Things like preventing disease (Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes, etc, etc, etc) or being able to squat down to get up off the toilet are likely going to be higher-quality motivators than just growing your butt or losing weight when it comes to a long-term commitment to health. Something I talk to clients about daily is their “non-aesthetic why”. Do they want to be able to pick their grandchild up, or play with them on the floor with no fear of getting up? Do they have a house with stairs and would rather not have to move as they age? Do they want to be able to say yes to a hike, a bike, a game of pickle ball with their friends? A big part of keeping a healthy brain and body is movement AND community. For those of you who don’t know, my grandma has dementia. It didn’t start to steadily decline when she stopped being able to go to her Silver Sneakers classes in 2020. She lost her consistency - with both movement and community. My mom ended up as her caretaker for over three and a half years, which also impacted mom’s sense of independence, community and movement. I’ve gotten to watch first-hand (albeit, across the country) how this lack truly affected mental, physical and emotional status of two generations of women that mean the world to me. Thankfully, mom is rocking her walking and healthier habits now and I’ve never been a more proud daughter of her taking charge of her health. 🩷 Now, I’m not saying that exercise would have fully prevented her dementia - but there are TONS of studies out there now showing that even daily walking outdoors can lessen, and in come cases prevent, severe cases from occurring. We tend to think of our brains and bodies as separate entities, when in reality our CNS is connected and aware of every.single.thing. that we do. Let me start by saying, this post is a bit harsh! Many of my new client calls start with the same complaint: “My metabolism is ruined.” Some of my clients who are not successful complain about their metabolism instead of taking responsibility for their inconsistent efforts and unrealistic expectations. First and foremost, a calorie deficit can easily become maintenance or a surplus if you have a “cheat” day or meal each week. It is unfortunate, but in a deficit, you have to be precise. That’s why I encourage my clients to fit in fun foods each day. This way, they live by moderation, do not feel deprived, and do not have binge sessions when they have “bad” foods (I actually hate labeling foods as good and bad for that very reason!). Second, fluctuations are normal and to be expected. Focus on the weekly average and track that. Lastly, there is no rush! Losing 0.5 lbs to 1% of your body weight on average should be the weight loss you aim to achieve. Quick fixes do not exist, and crash diets fail time and time again, leaving people in a worse place than when they started. I see it all the time. Someone starts with the slow, steady, one-step-a-time approach, struggles and doesn’t immediately see progress, so then they suddenly announce “time to try keto!” Keto is the most extreme of extremes. If we’re struggling with a softer approach, we sure as hell ain’t gonna thrive with a dramatic approach. The one-step-a-time approach still requires effort and can still be a challenge. But it’s less invasive and often more sustainable than doing a complete 180. Think of it as climbing uphill reallyyyyyy slowly instead in just going up and down all the time and never getting to the top, which is what happens with extreme approaches. Each one of us have different available range of motion when it comes to exercising. With that in mind, we perform different mobility and flexibility assessments before the new athlete joins CrossFit group classes. Some of the movements might need to be changed or adapted until the athlete is able to get to the full range of motion required to perform an exercise. Let’s say someone doesn’t have enough hip flexion and, as a consequence, this person butt winks in order to “squat deeper” or to go below parallel - swipe left to see what a butt wink is. - Adaptation: This person might want to limit the range of motion by squatting to a target to avoid the pelvis tilt. - Problem solving: This person might want to work on accessory exercises that increase the amount of hip flexion they can get to, and therefore, increase the squat depth without pelvis compensations. Performing the exercise without any adaptation is awesome, but always keep in mind that the way you move is 🔑 for long term success and safety. Send us a DM if you consider starting CrossFit. This month I turned 47 and during this time, I like to reflect on where I’ve been and where I’m going. Celebrate my wins and learn from my losses but make sure I keep moving forward. I’m not a shirt off kind of dude but this is a celebration for me. Knowing that I’ve been through Hell and back many times, but I’M STILL HERE. I’m here working and learning to be better everyday, knowing I never want to go back to how I was in the past. Like a lotus flower blossoming, I’m interested in enlightenment above all else. In my late 30’s I thought I was healthy even though I was eating pizza & wings for dinner while downing a bottle of wine and 10 beers to calm my mind. I realized that lifestyle had to stop so I decided to do a hard reset and really go back to what I knew and get back on the path. Simply put, I needed to get my sh$t together. I used all of my education , experience & knowledge to develop a system designed to help with the struggles people encounter over the age of 40 and MY METHODS WORK. All that is required is a growth mindset and putting in the work but I promise it will be fun! I may not be the biggest, most muscular guy but I strive for a fighters body that’s lean, strong, fast & capable of going 12 rounds if I have to. What is the connection between sodium, genetics, and hypertension? Sodium is an essential micronutrient that regulates blood pressure and blood volume. The major adverse effect of excess sodium intake is elevated blood pressure, which increases a person’s risk of hypertension and heart disease. Research shows that the ACE gene directs the body to produce the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which is known to play a role in regulating the response of blood pressure to sodium intake. Studies have shown that a person’s blood pressure response to excess sodium intake is dependent on the ACE gene. When changes in blood pressure were examined based on ACE genotype, subjects with the AA genotype showed a significantly greater increase in 24-hour blood pressure in response to sodium than subjects with the GG genotype. Studies from Poch et al. (2001) concluded that individuals with the GA or AA genotype may be more likely to have salt-sensitive hypertension and larger blood pressure increases in response to a high-salt diet.
