Interessanter Artikel letzte Woche in der Bild-Zeitung 💡 Hier kritisiert Prof. David Ludwig (66) von der Harvard Universitity, einer der führenden Adipositasforscher, die Ernährungsstrategie von Bundesminister Cem Özdemir. 🍏 Seine Kritik geht vor allem in Richtung der Rezepturen für eine fettarme Ernährung, die in Schulen, Kantinen und Krankenhäusern umgesetzt werden sollen. 🥘 Zudem sollen wir stärker auf vegane Lebenmittel setzen. Der Professor argumentiert, dass eine vegane Ernährung nicht zwangsläufig gesünder sei. Wenn nicht richtig ausgeführt, könne sie zu Mangelerscheinungen und Übergewicht führen. In den USA habe man diese Strategie vor 20 Jahren aufgegeben. 😬 Auch sollen wir laut den neuen DGE-Empfehlungen nur noch 1 Ei pro Tag essen. Hierzu Prof. Ludwig: „Wenn Sie sich den Zusammenhang zwischen Eierkonsum und Vorbeugung von Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen anschauen, ist die Beschränkung ohne Beweise.“ 🥹 Der Forscher versteht auch nicht, wie die DGE ihre Ernährungsempfehlungen mit Fragen des Klimaschutzes verbindet. Sein Rat: Wir sollten uns auf andere, wichtigere Faktoren des Klimawandels konzentrieren. 🧐 Unsere Politiker stützen ihre Argumentationen immer gerne auf DIE Wissenschaft. Sometimes it can be hard to make all the changes all at once to help provide optimal nutritional availability to get your periods back. Over the next few weeks, I will be providing tips to help support little changes that you can make to better balance energy intake with expenditure. Carbs are KEYS! 🔑🥨🍬 If you want to improve your performance, energy, and endurance during your training sessions, carbohydrates are your best friend! There are two main types of carbohydrates: 1️⃣ Complex carbs (ie. whole grains & starchy vegetables) which are digested more slowly and offer sustained energy release. 2️⃣ Simple carbs (fruits, processed grains & milk) which are quick to digest and provide rapid energy! Whilst it’s crucial for your diet to include both types of carbohydrates, being specific with simple carbohydrate intake around the 30-45min window before your workout will significantly improve your overall performance! 🏃🏋🏻‍♀️ Consuming simple carbs is crucial for athletes because they provide a rapid source of energy that can be immediately utilized during intense training sessions! Do you know how often you should have a period? While the average menstrual cycle is 28 days, it’s normal for some women to have shorter or longer cycles. It could indicate an underlying issue if you’re experiencing irregular periods or missing periods altogether. RED-S stands for Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport. This syndrome of declining athletic performance and general poor health happens when athletes don’t get enough fuel through food to support the energy demands of their daily lives and training. RED-S affects athletes of any gender and ability level. It is often seen in combination with a spectrum of disordered eating. Additionally, female athletes might experience polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), low body weight, and overtraining are just some of the reasons why women may not have a period every month. Sadly, there is a lack of education or support for athletes and staff: 🤯 Only 2 out of 28 Olympic International Federations had programs on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs). 🤯 And 6 out of 28 Olympic International Federations had programs on eating disorders (ED) We must do better for our athletes. Preventing REDs and EDs requires increased awareness among athletes and support staff and increased education to improve their health, well-being, and performance. Took a leaf out of @running_veg book and took to Vinted (my new fave - who even buys new anymore 😂) and bought a pair of Vaporfly's used once or twice! marathon season is in fulll floooow 🏃‍♂️ & I’m absolutely loving it. If your in the performance world you have probably heard people talk about carb loading. The point off carb loading is to fill up on our glycogen storages so that you have enough energy in the tank for a 90-120 mins endurance event. This is our bodies fav type off fuel for high intensity training. Even if you can’t reach that optimal amount as it is hurt high do make an effort to increase your carbs in some way before your event. You might also see a slight spike in scale weight throughout this load but this is weight gain from extra food and not fat gain. Do not panic. Just focus on event at hand and fecking enjoy every single moment - race day/event day is the celebration of everything you’ve done to get there, the hard work is the lead up. As a naturally curious and inquisitive mind, it's not often that I just go along with things because "that's the way we do it". But I fell foul of "going along with things" myself recently. When I started thinking about the problem I was having, there was an obvious solution, and the reason I hadn't come up with it sooner, was simply because I'd forgotten to ask "why"? When someone tells you in your nutrition or training life "that's just the way we do it", never go along with it until you know why. Because when you understand the why, you have a much better chance of understanding whether it's the right way forward for you and your goals, or not. "It was the probably most important thing I learned from my coach in the past months. Rest days are rest days. I only wish I had done this earlier. Maybe some results would have looked differently." And how often have you trained when your coach's plan said rest? Rest and recovery are important. We think about training all the time and if the pieces don't fall into place, we think we have to train more and harder. In all these reflections we forget to think about what we do to help the body recover. Recovery foods in place? Enough sleep? Enough rest? Ever thought about how much time you give your body to rest? To recover from exercise and to get ready for the next intense effort? When was your last full rest day? 🤔 Athletes who rest aren’t weak. They’ve understood the concept of training. 👌 Rest can take several days when the effort was hard. Recovery on the molecular level takes long, especially when the effort was huge, when the exercise was new and when the damage was big. Just because the weather is nice or some mates are out exercising doesn't change your recovery status. Successful recovery needs a good nutrition strategy. Yes, the right nutrition during recovery speeds up recovery processes. The right substrate at the right time helps the body to get back on its feet and be ready for the next training. Recovery is more than loads of protein because protein is only one of the several nutrients that play a role in rebuilding and repairing. Check with your sports dietitian to set up your strategy. And keep in mind: rebuilding and full recovery can only happen if you rest and take it very easy. On some days the training part is solely consisting of rest. But the rest will make you stronger. When the training plan says rest, then let it be rest. Focus on good nutrition that promotes recovery and rebuilding. When your body has just gone through a series of hard days, then proper nutrition is important for your health and your recovery.
