Massive well done to our athlete @mikeytrailrun for smashing his first race back after his hip operation Mikey took on the @trailevents.co Wye Valley 13km which was a great first race as he ran super strong finish in 4th place 🎉 This race was a big stepping stone for him coming back to running, unfortunately since his hip op he has been struggling with some ankle issues which has set him back slightly BUT he has found the terrain that’s suited to him and is making use of playing to his strength….. it certainly paid off! We are extremely proud of his achievement and for working through so many challenges to get to race day! @magsmay_d @theultrarunningcoach_

Well, you never know. Might make a cyclist of me yet ? Just need to buy some proper shoes now! Plan for the next few weeks: Lower the run volume a little. Increase the intensity. Add in some additional/low stress volume on the bike 🙌🏻

The @spinerace is only 8months away 😵 and Im looking for a couple of athletes to coach and prepare for the race 🙌🏻 I currently have a few spaces for coaching available and would love to offer these to people wanting to train specifically for this race! The race means a lot to me personally, having done various editions of the race over the years and I have really enjoyed coaching people for all the spine races in previous years (summer and winter!) - so if this is something your interested in, I’d love to work with you 😊 8 months seems a long way away, but it really isn’t, it will soon come around. Plus there’s the fact it’ll take a few months to build some rapport, leaving just around 6 months to train properly. Don’t be that person that gets in touch in November 🤣! (I get that a lot) I’m not looking for a certain calibre of runner, I love to work with beginners (probably more than seasoned runners to be honest) and experienced athletes. All I ask is that your committed, dedicated and have the time to train before getting in touch 🙏🏻 If this is something you’re interested in, please send me a DM or get in touch via the website, link in bio 😃. @mountainstrong_ @theultrarunningcoach_ @magsmay_d

🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮 Perhaps the genius of ultra running is its supreme lack of utility. It makes no sense in a world of space ships and supercomputers to run vast distances on foot. There is no money in it and no fame, frequently not even the approval of peers. But as poets, apostles and philosophers have insisted from the dawn of time, there is more to life than logic and common sense. The ultra runners know this instinctively. And they know something else that is lost on the sedentary. They understand, perhaps better than anyone, that the doors to the spirit will swing open with physical effort. In running such long and taxing distances they answer a call from the deepest realms of their being — a call that asks who they are” 🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮 David Blaikie @scarpa_uk @tisoonline @mountainstrong_ 📸 @emiliabarclay

These smiles say it all 😁 4 very happy people all surpassing their goals at UTS @ultratrailsnowdonia Jeremy wanted sub 24hr after a 26hr finish at the 100k last year and crossed the line in 21:05! ⚡ Lauren came back from a long term injury after UTS50k last year and ran it quicker this time round! 👊 Andrew (not pictured) enjoyed his first time at a UTS event and successfully completed the 100k 💪 Lewis stepped up from the 100k last year to the 100m this year. Relax and look after yourself was the message. Around two thirds of people didn't finish, he did and strongly! Massive shout out to our coached athletes who took on @ultratrailsnowdonia last weekend. This was a very tough day for all our athletes with the heat increasing to 28c on the day from 12c in the lead up to this event ….. this meant not a lot of time to acclimatise to the heat We had 12 athletes running through different distances and had 100% completion rate in 3 of those which was absolutely amazing, well done team!! For the 100km athletes we had 2 out of 6 cross the finish line in amazing times and both who smashed their finish time goals 🎉 Our 4 athletes who didn’t get to finish took on such a tough day, they had to deal with various issues like dehydration, Achilles flare ups, stomach issues, cramp and more ….. we want to say an even bigger well done to all these guys because although they didn’t finish they still covered a huge amount of distance/elevation on the day and they had to work much harder to get to where they did finish…. We are in awe of you all! Running ultras is not an easy task and it’s certainly not a given right that you will make the finish line, this is why we do it! Every race has an unknown, uncertainties and most of all uncontrollable challenges that make these races tough. We go into these races with the main goal of finishing and everything else, well that’s a bonus! No matter a completion, a win or a DNF we are always amazed by how hard our athletes work before during and after these events. These results have not knocked our team down, in fact it has built them up to go again next year and complete what they didn’t achieve…. So much determination from them all which always inspires us. Amazing work all of you, what a team we have ❤️ @magsmay_d @theultrarunningcoach_

@utlactrail 65 km with 4000m of ⛰️ What a great day out! I would highly reccomend to anybody that is thinking about the race next year. I started the race very relaxed, maybe a bit too relaxed, as I got held up in a single file queue for 20mins on the first climb- on the other hand maybe this was a blessing in disguise? It was very humid, I was sweating a lot. As the race spread out I was able to run at my own pace more freely and began passing people. At around the 50km mark there was the final climb and I started to feel nauseous and lost all power, it was mid day and the sun was at its hottest. I had to grind up the hill very slowly but I got there and felt ok at the top. Then came the final descent- this is where things fell apart and I started to get agonising cramp in my adductor to the point where I had to stop and keep holding hold onto trees for a few mins until it passed. I’m guessing I wasted another 20mins here and quite a few more people over took me. Eventually it went and I was able to charge down the hill but when we got to the flat on the bottom both of my hamstrings were on the verge of cramping 😂 A few more people overtook me. There was only maybe 1km left at this point. I was very glad to get to the finish - other than the cramp Id had a good race! Onto the next one @lakeland_50_100 (50) 📸 @jeantetstefano @scarpa_uk @montaneofficial

Did another one of those running things. Nothing fell off, nothing broke, nothing was that out of sorts. We'll call that a little bit of progress. Slowly but surely. Bit by bit. Keeping it at 2 runs a week for the time being. Giving the dodgy calf plenty of time to recover and not overloading with impact and getting back into the mess we were in a few weeks ago. Yes I am also out on the bike with @howymonk tonight.... So gym, run, bike, walk all in the space of a couple of days. Proper hybrid me..... Less said about the weather the better. #running #runchat #ukrunchat #trailrunning #uktrailrunning #runnersofinstagram #instarunner #igrunner #redfoxrunners #redfoxrunclub #runspirerunners #irunspire #happystride #rasselbockrunners #run #runners #runningmotivation #ultrarunner #ultrarunning #ukultrarunning #zone2miles #allaboutthebase #beyourownhype #keepshowingup #twistedrunning #kyloeinthewild #ambassador

Have you heard of the saying “you can’t rush a good job”? It’s abit like training for a race- there’s lots of little elements that you work on over time which then culminate into race day. When we work hard It can be too easy to have high expectations and expect good results to come in a short space of time, like 1-2 months, but the reality is it’s going to take longer! 6-12 months (at best) more than likely a few years! So if your expectations are too high it can be easy to fall into the trap of feeling disappointed. One thing that has helped me as a runner recently is how I manage my “expectations”. Just because I’m working/training hard, doesn’t guarantee that I’m going to start winning races, I’d like that very much 😂 but I have to be realistic! Setting the bar low can really help. Instead of having an A goal to finish within a certain time, a B goal to finish a little slower and a C goal to “just finish”, try doing it the other way round, ie make the A goal to finish & the C goal the fastest time. Set yourself up mentally to succeed! Another thing that has also massively helped me, is changing my “outlook” on training & racing. Instead of trying to race hard and being hell bent on racing or a position, Iv been learning to run my own race & race against myself & use the race as a test to measure my progress from the training. It’s still a race, but instead of feeling like crap & “maybe” doing well, I’m trying to race them smarter, staying relaxed, with much more control & “do well”. The key word here is “do well” & what defines it. “Doing well” can be nailing my nutrition/hydration, pacing better, feeling strong, doing more running than walking, improving my easy run pace etc. Keep on doing all the right things well & in time the rest will come 🙌🏻 At UTLAC on Saturday my plan was to enjoy the race with no pressure, have fun, experience it & test if I’ve made progress with the training I’ve done in the last 6months? I did lots of things well & I’m looking forward to tweaking a few things to improve for the next test- Lakeland50 in July. Thank you @utlactrail for having me & @scarpa_world @scarpa_uk for the support and experience🙏🏻

A tough day out. 37 miles door to door with over 8000ft of ascent. GUESS WHO'S BACK. Hardly like it was months and months but still.... Self management from the physio sign off yesterday, so took myself for a little tester today. A glorious morning in the forest with the hairy hounds to do my tried and trusted BYU Loop, knowing there's plenty of running and walking sections. Luckily thanks to being part time bike guy, my lungs didn't feel like they wanted to come out my chest and really, everything felt good, not amazing, but good. We'll take that. Just don't do anything silly and build back up slowly and all will be reet. Progress is very rarely linear 🙏🏻 (abit like the path in this photo) So stop looking for the quick result 👀 If you want to perform better, you need to become a master of delayed gratification. It’s the ability to put in the work knowing that the benefits probably won’t show for weeks, months or years down the road and being cool with that 🙌🏻 A good example of delayed gratification is working hard all through winter to have a good summer race season - the reward might not be fruitful during winter but if you stick with it and don’t expect the reward instantly, it’ll come eventually 😃 @mountainstrong_ @tisoonline @scarpa_uk 📸 @emiliabarclay

Another biker high fived me today. Does this mean I've been officially initiated as a bike guy now?? Genuinely really enjoying my time on 2 wheels, it's not the same, but it's definitely a good second place. Went up round the pines and on some of the blue and red routes, getting quicker, getting more confident and pushing. This time last year, I was standing at the starting line of my first 100km race (I finished with 111km on my watch) for a lap around the Isle of Wight. A challenge I’d wanted to complete for some time but various challenges (pandemic, stress fracture) got in my way. Although I’d done so much training I still remember feeling petrified about what I was about to put myself through, even if I had done 60km distance in training. It took me the better part of a day, which was a long time on my feet, a lot of which I spent alone in the dark along cliff paths. But I did it! And it couldn’t have been too bad because I signed up for another 100km that took place a few weeks later (😅 bad idea - I was not recovered, but I still finished it). The feeling when I saw the finish line was wild. What a sense of pride (which was important because there wasn’t a single soul there to cheer me over the line 😂😭) I’m still proud of what I accomplished and not sure that will ever go. Best food: a cola ice lolly along the promenade during the heat of the day (unusually hot!). There was a pick & mix aid station with lots of sweets. Best decision from past Angela: packing a pair of fresh trainers in my drop bag at halfway so I could change out of my crusty muddy shoes. Best views: too many to count of the beautiful beaches around the island, but a runner up would be the view of the Spinnaker Tower which made me feel a little boost as I was alone in the dark. #isleofwightultrachallenge #isleofwightultra #ukultrarunning #ukultras #100kmrace #ultrarunning #ultrarunner #ultrarunninglife

Congratulations to my athlete @mrscroker18 for her brilliant run at the Butcombe Trail Ultra 56 mile race yesterday and finishing 3rd lady 🥉 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 For the last 6-7 months we have been working on all aspects of her running, from specific run training to strength and mobility work to changing how she fuels/hydrates and building her confidence 💫 The game plan yesterday was to have a well paced race, get the fuelling and hydration right, not go out too hard and maintain a pace that she felt like she’d be able to maintain for the whole duration of the race and to look after herself- so stop to look after her feet if she needed to etc. She absolutely nailed it - Super proud of you Laura 😊 Another big well done from US @mountainstrong_ ,keep up all your hard work 👏🏻👏🏻 Enjoy the recovery/week off and then it’s time to continue with the plan and keep working towards the @13valleysultra in September ⛰️⛰️⛰️ @mountainstrong_ @mrscroker18 @magsmay_d

My first Editorial review! Thank you @ukrunchat Introduction The book covers a seven-year journey filled with highs, lows, successes, and failures as Ash faces a decision following a disappointing performance London Marathon in 2016. He wonders, “What if? What if he really put his heart and soul into training, what might he achieve?” The book is a collection of Ash’s thoughts as he shares his experiences of training. It’s a very personal story, with some very humbling - as well as humorous - moments. Summary The book is structured chronologically, with chapters focusing on the main races in Ash’s path to becoming the runner he knows he can be, including the London and Brighton marathons, the Snowdon 24 hour race, the Centurion series of 50 and 100 mile races and many more. In them he shares the ups and downs of training, in a very human way. It’s a short, but engaging, well-paced (pardon the pun!), read. I loved the insight into different marathons and ultra races. It’s really interesting reading about the UTMB CCC and the Centurion 100 mile races, being very unlikely to complete these myself. Ash comes across as very humble, and very self-deprecating, but he is clearly a very talented runner, and his passion for running and racing really comes across in his book. I also enjoyed his insights into training for - and pacing - his marathons. Conclusion I really enjoyed this book. It completely surpassed my expectations, and I was really rooting for Ash to succeed by the end, having felt I was on a journey with him. The ending of the book gave me a warm fuzzy feeling and reminded me of everything I love about running. Ash’s book has actuallyinspired me to change up my own training: I’m wondering what I’m capable of myself. This book has the best of both worlds - fast road racing for the road runners out there, with plenty of tips to pick up on, as well as extremely long jaunts out in the countryside. Thank you Ash for sharing such a warm, honest and heartfelt true story with us. #running #runningmotivation #marathon #runninginspiration #runners #runnersofinstagram #ukultrarunning #uktrailrunning #ukrunchat #centurioncommunity

Well done to one of our coaches @theultrarunningcoach_ for finishing 5th at the Lakes Mountain 40 race on Saturday. It was also the middle distance race for the British Trail Running Championships. Howard used the race as a big training race/day out to practice fuelling, hydrating, pacing and using his poles. Well done Howard we’re super proud of you 😊 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 @theultrarunningcoach_ @magsmay_d

LM40 went pretty well on Saturday and the weather was perfect for a big day out ⛰️⛰️⛰️ The plan was pretty simple: To not get caught up in racing and use it as a solid training run, staying in zone 2 and more than anything to enjoy the day out and not ruin myself for @utlactrail in a few weeks! On the climb out of Askham I was right at the back of the field, I was struggling to keep my heart rate down and I was teetering on my aerobic threshold right from the go so I had to walk a lot of the way upto loadpot hill and high street with some intermittent jogging here and there… After a few hours I slowly began to overtake people and my heart rate settled down a little bit. I don’t think my body responds well to early starts and by lunch time I was feeling pretty good, I think I needed to let my body wake up properly. By the time I got to hellvellyn I didn’t feel like I was in a race anymore, I felt nice and relaxed. I loved trotting down Swirrel edge knowing there was only one little climb left which was place fell and then I’d be on the home straight (literally 😂) Along the way I’d said to myself it would be good to set myself up to be able to actually run the final 10km from howtown without stopping (which I practically did) so I was quite chuffed with that too. The whole day just went really well, the pacing, nutrition, hydration and how I felt in general. Before setting off I had guessed around 9 hours. My coach said 8.5 hours and I finished in 7.5 hours in 5th position so I was pretty chuffed with that! Hopefully it’s good sign of things to come 🙏🏻 Massive thanks to my coach @timpigotthp3 for all the help so far and getting me back to feeling good again. Also thanks to @nav4adventure and their team for setting up an ace day, check out their other races on the nav4 website… 📸 @john70bamber @montaneofficial @scarpa_uk @mountain_king_trailblaze @voomnutrition @precisionfandh @garminuk @nav4adventure

Ah Monday...on Saturday I completed the #SheUltra along the #penllŷn coast and it was correctly termed #beautifullybrutal I'm definitely going to book that one again but in the mean time..... I'm in for Chester 50 next year with @gbultras @chesterultra I've pretty much winged these last 2 ultra distances, but next year I'm aiming for steady pace all the way. I'll be having a week or so off running and then I'll be prioritising sleep, diet and strength training to get stronger before I go back to a new training block. #perimenopausefitness #running #hiking #outside #Wales #womensrunning #thisgirlcan #marathon #ultrarunninglife #ukultrarunning #training #motivation #exercisemotivation #exercisegoals #distancerunner #diet #slowrunner #saucony #harrier_trail_running #runner #marathoner #trails #trailrunning

✨South Downs Way - Ultra Training ✨ Back to Ultra Marathon Training after weeks of recovery. The physio exercises are still a big part of my training though. I am super scared to get this pain again 😅 I am grateful that my physios reminded me how dumb I was, to go back running after a serious injury 🤪 The last time I was here, was actually a year ago. My first attempt of a 50 miler (80km). I had to stop because I twisted the right ankle while I was taking a picture! I wasn’t moving 😫 It was hard to come back on trail, especially after having a hate relationship last year with it for months! I believe I went through a big period of doubts and depression… When uni finished, I started to appreciate again being in green spaces. I can’t explain the feeling of being in love of running again. Especially, after doing the Chilterns Wonderland in September. (Again, another tentative of 50 miler but I ended up to go on the wrong way & to follow the photographer which was definitely not going the right way 😂) Oh well, it was a lovely experience. Got my beers at the end hehe! You know what came next: NYC Marathon & Vietnam Trail Marathon 😊 It feels good to be back 🙏🏻 I missed the views, the animals and nature 😍 What a great connection of the mind & the body ☺️ I can’t wait for the @camino_ultra trip to Portugal in 7 days exactly! I don’t know what to expect but I am ready for the adventure! Have a lovely weekend to all & to all London Marathon Runner tomorrow… ENJOY!!!! I’ll be at Mile 3 to Cheer you Up! Well done to my coached athlete @dlea1965 for smashing his 10km trail race last weekend David has been working on building a stronger and robust body whilst moving into trail running with specific S&C sessions, this has been pivotal to his progression and not getting injured in the process He has taken on a few shorter trails races and is seeing some great improvements finishing 2nd MV50 and in a great time ….. working on the shorter stuff is key as it allows you to work a bit harder but also is a great stepping stone for the longer stuff We are very proud of David for working hard and having the confidence to race over this past year as this was something he wasn’t sure if he would enjoy but he has changed his mindset and feeling stronger gives you more confidence overall Well done, great running as always! We are excited to see what your next race brings

Real food when Running…. A lot of my athletes are asking what real foods I eat when I run or race and if there’s anything I would recommend? I’m certainly not going to get into the whole carbs vs keto debate - I’ll let the nutritionists get into that 😃… but as you can see, I prefer to eat and feel much better when running on carbohydrates (Cho) Here’s some examples of foods I’ll be carrying and eating during my race today. The fruit loaf and the wraps I make some kind of sandwich or wrap with by putting my favourite toppings/fillings in ie Nutella or Jam, honey and maybe even some peanut butter! Or cheese and pickle, chicken/mayo etc. I think sports nutrition is great as it’s a practical way of carrying and consuming high amounts of Cho, it’s light, condensed and compact but it can’t always be sustainable depending on the duration of your run/race, so practicing eating real food on your long runs is a good idea to help you figure out what you like/don’t like or maybe a better way of putting it is “what works for you” Hope this helps ?! What’s your favourite go to real food when running/racing?

Upon moving to Askham last week I realised that the @nav4adventure LM40 race was on this week 😬 It’s abit close to another race but you only live once, it would be a shame to not do a 40 mile race that starts and finishes 30 seconds from the front door -so iv taken a last minute entry 😃. Iv done it twice before many years ago. It’s a stunning route starting in Askham and it’s up to you how you get to the checkpoints which are, loadpot hill, high street, angle tarn, patterdale, grisedale tarn, helvellyn, patterdale, place fell, howtown and then back to Askham. Even though it’s the British Trail Championships middle distance race, I’ll be taking it easy, using it as nothing but a solid training run (no taper etc) staying strictly within zone 2 and enjoying the day out ⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️ The aim of the day is to enjoy myself, have a big day out and finish, with not having done too much damage. Recover well next week and be ready for @utlactrail 60km in 3 weeks. @scarpa_uk @montaneofficial 📸 @steveashworthmedia
