Continuing with this week’s bumper #MedalMonday … 🏅Mark and Simon @towsemark @simon.a.blake did Boston (UK) marathon - particularly satisfying for Simon as he’d trained for Manchester then had to miss it. And Mark did run Manchester so that’s two great marathons in quick succession. The weather was absolutely vile for them as well so they showed great tenacity. 🏅Simon Robertson did The Fellsman @thefellsman! This is a 60 mile course which is very, very hilly (as you can see from the elevation in pic 2)! This isn’t his first go at it and this time he made good decisions re navigation and so on, and despite a tough night on the hills completed it in a nifty 18:44 hrs. 🏅Fiona, Gill, and Pete all competed in Harrogate Sprint Triathlon @harrogatetriclub on Sunday, also in the vile weather! Gill said it was brutal out there and Pete said it was freezing and wet too but he completed it in a respectable time. I’m not sure how Fiona got on - if anyone knows do let us know? And Gill came in as 2nd lady overall! 🎉 Well done everybody! I enjoyed a brilliant weekend at the 60th anniversary @thefellsman. Overall, the weather was kind with warm sunshine most of the day before temperatures dropped below zero°C after sunset. I was going well but feeling the effort from quite early on. At redshaw CP, approximately 30 miles in, I sat and contemplated my life choices with a brew before continuing on. Shortly afterwards, I met first-time Fellsman participant Jessica, and we teamed up for the final 30 miles, encouraging each other along. We finished in 18hrs 32mins which, whilst slower than I had hoped, isn't too shabby. It was great to see participant numbers up on previous years and to see so many @the.green.runners badges being displayed on repaired kit and running packs. #TheFellsman #Fellsman #FellRunning #UltraRunning #TheGreenRunners
The Fellsman. 98k / 4000m+ Happy to take 6th yesterday. Races often say they are different from the rest. A community atmosphere, low key and friendly. It gets batted about so much it's sort of lost its meaning. Not here. I've heard a lot of people say you should do the Fellsman at least once and then you'll be back again. I get it. Glorious sunshine, freezing wind and hail. We got it all out there! Peat hags to walled tracks, high summits to open moorland and rough fell 🤗 What a bloody great line across the Dales this is! The Fellsman. Shit that was hard. Good chunks of it are not on paths or even trods, and thus death defying bogs. 100km of it. Bucken Pike and Great Whernside in the dark were particular liquidy peat. Shame I didn’t get photos of the night section as the first half of the route was fairly dry. After shivering across Bucken Pike I nearly gave up by a gas fire at a checkpoint tent, but had a word with myself and carried on fast enough to keep warm. Very happy with under 20 hours as that was my goal and I’d had moments questioning if I’d even be under 24 given the route and conditions. Love that this is the 60th year of an event organised by local Scouts and you get more than what you pay for, fantastically organised and catered for. I particularly love that it attracts the elite runners and hardy walkers alike and everyone in between. In 10 days' time, I'm due to toe the start line of my favourite event. The Fellsman is a 61 mile (if your navigation is good) traverse of the Yorkshire Dales with 11,000ft of climbing. First run in 1962 this year marks the 60th anniversary event. I've finished the event 4 times and DNF'd twice. It is a tough but brilliant day out. Having trained hard for this year's race, I'm ready to put my fitness to the test. Last Friday at the very end of a session in The Garden Gym, I tweaked my back. I've been nursing it since, and I'm praying it begins to feel better soon, and I get the opportunity to try and come home with another fully punched tally. Bit of a delayed post, and not many photos, but I needed to post about this one...The Fellsman. 62 mile, almost 13,000ft elevation, just under 19 hours. Positives: 1. great organisation, volunteers and food loaded checkpoints 2. unlike most other ultras I've ran - I was nearly always with someone else 3. because there were so many checkpoints it helped make you feel like you were always getting somewhere. There are no negatives, it was just so tough with the amount of elevation plus some routes were off path, across rough and boggy ground (I lost my leg up to my hip in what i thought was a shallow ponded bit of water 🙈😆). It was hilly 🤣 To put the elevation in perspective the first two spikes are Ingleborough and Whernside (two of the Yorkshire three peaks). The day after was a sideways down the stairs kind of day. Did I mention it was tough? The Fellsman 2023! That was awesome!! Fantastic time. Had to retire at CP19, Cray. Walked with Anna Stav through to Fleet Moss (CP15) on Anna's first attempt where she had to retire around 3:30am/60km. I then became last on the road due to retiress behind me and took personal challenge to regain time and see if I could make the cuts and finish. Chased down through to CP16 at Deepdale and ran through the river to get to the checkpoint. Got through to CP16 no problems but missed CP17 at Chapel by meters in the mist and got to CP18 at Hell's Gap. Had to be retired at CP19 Cray even though would have loved to have gone on. Next time......... First time I've returned to it after 23 years! 2023 - Route Map *** Please note - 3 NEW checkpoint locations between Fleetmoss & Cray *** The start of the event is in Ingleton in the field behind the Community Centre at 8.30 am sharp. All entrants are expected to check in between 6.00am and 8.00am on the morning of the event. The route takes the entrants up Ingleborough, down to the Hill Inn and up Whernside (two of the famous Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks Walk). From the summit of Whernside the route drops down into Kingsdale then up over Gragareth and Great Coum and down into the picturesque Dales village of Dent. Next Blea Moor is traversed and the route drops the entrant back into Dentdale at Stonehouse. The route then leaves Dentdale behind and climbs to the summit of Great Knoutberry before dropping down to cross the Ingleton to Hawes road at Redshaw. Next the route climbs Snaizeholme, crosses to Dodd Fell, and meets the Hawes to Kettlewell road at Fleet Moss. The entrants are then directed down the road towards Deepdale, then along the Dalesway route to Yockenthwaite, and back onto the hills towards Chapel Moor followed by Hell Gap, down to Cray then up to Buckden Pike, and down (slightly) to Park Rash above Kettlewell. Yesterday's effort 👌 Another section of the fellsman done. The race doesnt have a set route. You just have to hit each checkpoint in order. First section from Dent I have done before, but went out with my map and managed to almost get to checkpoint 12 before heading back. As it was late I just set watch to go back to the start and ended up going back on myself instead of the shorter, less hilly route back. I actually didn't mind, tho. It really has helped me a lot by using a map and looking out for markers. I feel more sure that I would actually know where I am in the future. Made a mistake yesterday and quickly realised that I had totally miscalculated where the turn off was. However, looking on strava maps, it looks like a huge shortcut on race day. I didn't get home till after midnight so running late into the night was good prep. The drive home was a but squeaky bum time through the mist 🤦♀️🤣 I have just got to fathom out checkpoint 12-17 now, which has different checkpoints to the one my map has. Hoping that I can be able to mark it accurately on the map and be able to plot a nice route. I love looking at the maps online and plotting out routes, but having a map to follow has been really interesting. The fenix has a function that plots various local peaks to where you are, so it's a great back up if you have no signal and need to double check. You have to really love skiing to do it in the Lakes . Snow comes and goes within 48hrs sometimes and so you got to be fast, there aren’t really any lifts and the only one there is, you have to walk to and it takes 45 mins to an hour… . Growing up skiing in the Lakes takes family commitment and a whole lot of energy, if your not fit, strong and can ski any type of snow, you might as well forget it . Getting ‘the next generation’ into it young is even harder, but with gentle persuasion, consistent outings in the fells and Dynafit’s new Snowstar range for kids, it’s all possible . My parents opened an outdoor shop in 1975 in Windermere, but 1977 they were a ski shop, people travelled from all over the country to buy and have ski kit serviced at our shop, The Fellsman, as it was then . I was on skis at 4 years old and my best memories are xc skiing in the fells with good old Spro (father) and watching Glen Plake in our boot room on bootleg video tapes . I never had kit as light and easy as Winter now has, but I had plenty of fun on 205 Fisher Crowns . Yesterday Winter and I ski toured to the summit of Birkhouse Moor on filled in depressions and drifts, it was hard work but Dynafits ski tour kit is so light for adults and kids, we made light work of difficult conditions and had an awesome run all the way back down . The Fellsman, a high level traverse covering more than 60 miles over very hard, rugged moorland in the Yorkshire Dales. Organised by the local scouts, the route is mostly on private land and doesn't follow recognised paths. It requires a high degree of map & compass work. The day time was fine, sunshine and glorious views. Then the wind blew heavy clouds from the West bringing rain. A difficult task became harder navigating through thick fog. New friends were made and old acquaintances rekindled we made it to the finish in just under 21 hours. Very pleased with the performance @lasportivauk Mutants. @high5sportsnutrition and the new @eatnurhu energy food. Coated in bees wax it dispenses with pesky packaging. The bars got soaked in the rain and unlike gels didn't become sticky. Any unused bars can be washed in water and put in the cupboard for next time. The 58th Fellsman race Time: 16hr 57min Highlight: cramps & 🤮 With recent form, the aim was to complete the race between 15-16 hrs but the body had different ideas. The good weather meant, I was heavily sweating half way up the Ingleborough climb. Kept the climb up the Whernside steady, felt good at the Kingsdale CP then pushed the Gargareth climb (big mistake against the plan to go easy with first 3 big climbs). Along the ridge to Green Hill, left feet got into a bug and right leg felt a slight cramp. Just before the Dent CP at 19 miles point, going over the stile, both quads seized up, couldn't move so sat down on the ground 20m away from the CP 🤣. A fellow runner gave me 2 salt tablets. Spent good 10 minutes drinking salt water at the CP. Thought it's game over. Thereafter every climb and downhill was painful. Food intake and nutrition was good; felt like throwing up at the Bucked Pike trig but made it to the Park Rash CP at the bottom of the Great Whernside. For some silly reason, I had few bites of a bread with Marmite. After leaving the tent within few hundred metres, everything came out x4 hands on knees 🤮. Game over! The beautiful day turned nasty with rain and wind, went round in circles at the Great Whernside due to poor visibility & the long cross-country descent was treacherous. So glad to complete it - first experience of cramps & throwing up during a race. When I signed up the race on 1 Jan 2022, I had no idea what I was getting into. Getting around the popular peaks of the Yorkshire Dales, the route profile was challenging- 60 miles with 11000 ft climb. If you love walking up and down the hills, with no marked path, on tussocks & muddy ground, you'll love it. Honestly I didn't enjoy the race but the scenery and the race organisation were awesome.

Yesterday was spent volunteering at the fellsman race as front safety officers. . . The race started out as a hikers race in the 1960's but has recently turned into a fell runners dream. . . 60+ miles and 11,000ft of climbing over the Fells of the Yorkshire Dales. . In our role, we visited all roadside checkpoints and got a front seat to see just how brutal this race can be. . Not normally a fan of joint finishes, but ran the whole 60 miles of The Fellsman with GB orienteer Oli Johnson and neither of us could shake each other off. Just wanted a solid run after Spine DNF, with no getting leany, no quitting and no groin-knack and I had that (esp on unideal prep).
