Glorious weekend in the Lake District and the best weather I’ve seen there all year ⛰️ ☀️ The fells are so vibrantly green and blooming✨ It was my 1st time visiting the northern fells around Longlands and I felt in the depths of the hills (like the view in pic 3!). Trails are untouched up there and it was peacefully quiet because of the festival in Keswick. The best surprise was stumbling on Hause Gill when changing my descent from Knott (drone clips 2 & 4) This is an absolute gem and I haven’t heard of this spot before!! Tried my best to capture with the drone but it’s a beautiful trail walk so one you have to see for yourself! Have a visit to these fells if you can, the hikes here are pristine… but know the single track roads take some patience!! 😉 oh and parking is sparse in places! On Sunday we headed to the Lakes to do Old Man of Coniston as well as a few other wainrights! It was super tough up to Wetherlam more due to the heat than anything else, some did struggle to cope but they kept going and did it! Once on the tops it was a lot cooler and not so hard going. We scrambled up Swirl How (an easy fun scramble - good for beginners if do it from Weatherlam), then went onto Great Crags. Some went over to Grey Friars to tick that off, the rest of us went up Brim Fell and then up the last lil bit to Old Man, taking in the stunning views. While we waited for those that had gone up Grey Friars a storm appeared from nowhere we saw a huge lightning bolt over towards Scafell Pike/Buttermere. It got a fair few people edgy and wanting to get off the mountain! It did not look like the storm clouds were moving though so we waited for the others, took a quick group photo then got off sharpish! Good job we did, by the time we reached the old packhorse road back to Coniston the storm clouds moved our way! Cnicht - the Matterhorn of Wales (when viewed from the South-West). I completed this stunning route this Sunday and it felt like it had a bit of everything. There is a short scramble to get to the summit, however it wasn’t technical. Just don’t forget if you don’t feel comfortable, it’s ok to turn around. Or you could do this route as and out and back, if you start in the opposite direction. 🥾 10.2km circular route 🚗 Car parking was free, but it is limited. Day 3 ✅ Distance 29km Day started with a long climb up tongue gill to hause gap. Then the long descent down grisedale beck and across grisedale to Patterdale. Planned to grab a treat in the village shop which turned out to be getting refurbished so we sat for a break and the rain decided to come 😐 continued through rooking along hause gate, dozens of subtle trails made navigation harder but we reached a water filtering house for lunch. We continued the very long inclined trail up hayeswater gill before turning off for a very steep and boggy ascent of the knott and kidsey pike at which point the fog appeared for the most part, clearing after the summit to show the ridge to kidsey howes and the ridiculously steep rocky descent to Randale beck. Knees were virtually destroyed at this point which made the last 5 undulating miles along haweswater reservoir a real mental battle. Eventually we stagged into burn banks and setup camp at aragon campsite. With another waterfall to provide that nights disruption.... SWCP Day 19 - Botallack to Porthcurno 🥾Distance: 24k 15 miles ☀️Weather: Sunny and cloudless blue sky ☕️Breakfast: instant porridge and fig rolls What a stupendous day! All the stars aligned today - weather, scenery, ice cream stop at the most perfect place and campsite with ocean view at the end in Porthcurno. I set off early today wanting plenty of time to stop and soak up the views and take advantage of the amazing weather. I passed through beautiful deserted beaches, stunning Sennen Cove, the terrible tourist complex of Lands End, Gwennap Head with its big Coast Watch station and 180 degree views of the flat calm azure ocean, before arriving at my destination of Porthcurno and heading to the wonderful Treen Farm campground. Honestly, it was hard to believe that I was in the UK! This historic site near Sheldon is the remains of the last working lead mine in Derbyshire. It's also said to be haunted. In 1833 three miners from an opposing mine (Maypitt mine) were suffocated by sulphurous smoke said to have come from a fire set by the Magpie miners. 24 magpie miners were put on trial for murder most of whom were released immediately and the remaining 5 after a year due to difficulties in identifying the culprits, and also the provocative actions from the Maypitt miners. First day of WHW and what a start to the week! At 40km or 1/4 of the whole trail, I knew today would be a challenge and the 18kg backpack would definitely be a shock to the system 😄 I had some anxiety regarding the backpack durability to begin with but decided to stay positive and open minded and it paid off... The first 10 or so miles I spent in the company of two Dutch brothers celebrating their 60th birthday. Peter, who lives in California has done a lot of hikes and trail races that are on my bucket list, including the Western States 100! His brother Johan, lived in Spalding, Lincolnshire for many years at the start of the century and was very familiar with my 2nd hometown Boston. What a small world! After separating in Drymen, I pushed onto the optional ascent of Conic Hill which offered panoramic views of Loch Lomond and was well worth the effort. The next last 10km were tough but I knew camping on the beach on Sallochy Campsite was going to be special and decided not to stop off in Balmaha. Halfway onto this last stop I came across a car park with a toilet block which was a huge relief as my water had run out. By chance there was a cleaner onsite and so I asked about the availability of drinking water. They pointed me towards the tap and also brought a cold can of orangeade out of their van! The hospitality and interactions along this trail have been second to none and I can't wait to see what experiences await me over the rest of this week. Let's just hope the ticks and midges don't drive me insane by then 😂
