Regular and Army Reserve soldiers serving with The Northern Gunners recently united to take part in the Royal Artillery Adventure Race (RAAR) 2024. Sergeant Gary Routledge a permanent staff instructor with our 205 (3DvA) Battery based in South Shields joined forces with Army Reservist Bombardier Kate Towns who serves with our 269 (West Riding) Battery based in Leeds to compete against 32 other Royal Artillery teams of two. The RAAR is a challenging endurance competition consisting of trail running, mountain biking and kayaking with a combined distance of over 50km. Bombardier Kate Towns said: “It was great to be involved in the event and represent the Regiment and the Army Reserve. The race combined a lot of skills that the army has equipped me with over the years; fitness, navigation, planning etc… Im looking forward to doing it all again next year." Well done to Gary and Kate for giving up their time to represent 101 Regiment Royal Artillery, a great team effort by both. What is your role in the Reserves? I am a 2IC coverer of a L118 light gun detachment where I am responsible for charges and ammunition. Do the skills you've learned in the Army Reserves help with your day job, and vice versa? Being in the Reserves has equipped me with skills in leadership and management, and I have achieved qualifications with the Chartered Management Institute at Level 5 Award through the Army Reserves. What have you done in your Army Reserve role? I have gained skiing and parachuting qualifications, supported Op London Bridge and other gun salutes, completed a Cold Weather Operators Course, participated in the Army Leadership Development Programme, as well as operations such as Op Cabrit 9 as part of the Enhanced Forward Presence multinational battle group in Estonia. I don’t usually post more than once in one day, but I forgot what date it was 🤦🏻♂️ In the early hours of 21st May 1982, British troops belonging to 3 Commando Brigade were embarked onto landing craft and proceeded towards the coastline near San Carlos Water on East Falkland Island. The military operation aimed at removing Argentinian forces from the British Overseas Territory had commenced. Similar to the historic ‘D-Day’ in Normandy during 1944, the troops were designated to land at multiple points, although they encountered minimal resistance unlike the Normandy invasion. To many, the situation felt surreal, and some initially perceived it as just another drill. The site was selected due to the limited shelter provided by the adjacent hills against potential surveillance and aerial assaults. Following the refusal of a small Argentinian unit stationed at Fanning Head, a prominent landmass at the entrance to San Carlos, to surrender to members of the Special Boat Squadron, HMS Glamorgan bombarded the location. A pivotal diversionary tactic on the Goose Green airstrip by the SAS and naval gunfire support from HMS Ardent thwarted Argentine ground attack aircraft from taking off. This successful action was crucial as it prevented potential attacks on the vulnerable British forces while they were in transit on the landing craft, and along the shoreline and lower slopes of the encircling hills before they could establish defensive positions. This mission held significant importance as the landing timetable had been delayed, and despite intentions to conduct all landings under the cover of darkness, most troops arrived during daylight hours. Here are some 2 & 3 PARA Falklands items, 2 & 3 PARA were both part of 3 Commando Brigade during the Falklands war and were among the first conventional troops to land on the islands. Here we have two very interesting pictures, on the right hand side we have a Bass Drum from the Regimental Band of the Grenadier Guards, This is used by the Bands Time-Beater. It essentially is the "Beating Heart" of the Band. As without it, it would prove rather difficult to march. But, the Bass Drum isn't only there to keep Time. It also serves as a form of communication to the Musicians. Various Beats are used to signal things such as, Music Cut-Offs, Mark Time, Step Off, and many other Drill Maneuvers. It can even be used to signal the Musicians to change their volume. On the Left Side we have a Side Drummer, from The Band of the Grenadier Guards. He wears Musicians Wings as all Guards Division Musicians do. He wears a Scarlet Apron from the Buff Belt down his left leg. This is to prevent wear and tear from the constant contact made by the Snare Drum while on the March. His Drum is carried on a sling, which attaches to the drum via a hoop and hook system. #Todayin 2010 Corporal Stephen Walker from 40 Commando Royal Marines, was killed in an explosion that happened near Patrol Base Almas, in Sangin, Helmand province. He was conducting a joint foot patrol with the Afghan National Army to reassure and improve the security for the local population in the area when the incident took place. Corporal Stephen Walker RM was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland on 5 April 1968. He lived in Exmouth with his wife, Leona, and their daughter, Greer, and was also a proud father to his son, Samuel. He originally joined the Royal Navy on 19 May 1986, qualifying as a cook and serving at HMS Raleigh, HMS Cochrane and on board HMS Cleopatra. He subsequently transferred to the Royal Marines, entering Recruit Training at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines on 12 March 1990, passing for duty on 7 November 1990. During his 20 year career he served across the broad spectrum of Royal Marine Units including; Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines, 40 and 45 Commando Royal Marines and the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines as a Recruit Troop Instructor. Joining 40 Commando Royal Marines in July 2009, he immediately conducted Mission Specific Training for deployment to Afghanistan. In April 2010, he deployed with Alpha Company, 40 Commando to Op HERRICK 12, employed as a Section Commander based out of Patrol Base ALMAS. Corporal Walker’s wife, Leona, said: Steve was passionate, loyal and determined. He enjoyed the role he had in the Marines but he was a family man at heart.“He was a fantastic Dad to Greer and he was the perfect soul mate to me. “Although this is a very sad time, Steve would want us to be positive. Last week, in partnership with International Drone Services, Protegimus Protection Ltd had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with the British Army in an exercise showcasing innovation and technology's power in modern military operations. With the esteemed 21 Multi-Role Medical Regiment of the Royal Army Medical Corps, we embarked on a five-day exercise to integrate drone technology into their operations. Throughout this exercise, we demonstrated the unique capabilities of drones in enhancing situational awareness and operational efficiency. Here's how we made a difference: Mass Casualty Incidents: Our drones provided real-time aerial views, allowing commanders to swiftly assess the scene, prioritise resources, and coordinate medical responses more effectively. IED Locating and Marking: We utilised advanced sensors to locate and mark Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), significantly reducing the risk to troops by keeping them safe from potential hazards. Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR): Our drones delivered live-stream footage directly to commanders and ground troops, ensuring they had up-to-the-minute intelligence for better decision-making. 3D Mapping: We created detailed 3D maps of the operational environment giving commanders a comprehensive terrain view, enabling more strategic mission planning and execution. FPV for Clearing Routes and Scouting: We deployed First-Person View (FPV) drones to clear safe routes and scout for injured soldiers in confined areas. By integrating drone technology into live scenarios, we showcased drones versatility and effectiveness and highlighted how they can significantly reduce risks to troops and enhance overall safety.
