In April, 1964, a nine man 22 SAS patrol from A Squadron, 3 troop was given the task of marking a DZ for Paratroopers who were going to conduct a jump on the top of a mountain in the Radfan Mountains, Aden. 3 Troop who were split into one four man team and one five man team inserted via scout helicopters on April 29th, a few hours into their six mile tab Trooper Warburton (Patrol Signaller) fell I’ll with food poisoning so they placed him in the middle of the formation to keep up with his pace however the Patrol were worried they were being watched but a CASEVAC was too risky so they found a place to hide. Unfortunately they were compromised by a goat herder but a single sniper shot silenced him, but it was too late and rebels began advancing onto their position however a few rebels were quickly killed by the patrol and others scattered. A team of rebels attempted to flank the patrol however they were all killed, the Patrol IC (Edward’s) called for air support and strafe runs began but there were too many rebels and the aircraft ran out of ammo so it had to RTB, a failed attempt in landing a helicopter to extil the patrol also ended in a helicopter damaged via bullets. As the fighting continues a .303 round kills Trooper Warburton and hits another Trooper as well as destroying their radio, and a enemy force consisting of 70 rebels begins to approach the patrol but Sergeant Taskers LMG halts the rebels single handily killing seven of the 70 approaching. The patrol decides to break-contact at nighttime, as the two teams began to leapfrog Edward’s is shot and killed during one of his bounds but the seven remaining patrol members manage to break of from the intense fire. Twice the rebels tried to ambush the patrol during their way back to base, twice the rebels failed and were either wounded or killed by the SAS patrol, the patrol managed to make it back to their base in Thumier in the morning. Unfortunately Edward’s and Warburtons bodies were left behind and the Rebels did unspeakable things to the bodies after but they were later recovered by a British Patrol. The SAS patrol managed to kill 20-30+ of the rebels.

On 12 October 1907 Lawrence began his first year as an undergraduate reading history at Jesus College and studied here until 1910. The first photo shows the entrance to Jesus College, Turl Street, Oxford. Canon E.F. Hall’s room overlooked Turl Street and it was from his room that T.E. Lawrence fired a blank cartridge from a revolver into this street. A plaque at the entrance to Jesus College, between Turl Street and the inner quadrangle, with Latin inscription commemorates T.E. 2nd Lieutenant Arthur Walton Mason 🇬🇧 was the pilot of a two-seater BE2e of 7 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. On 11 May 1917, together with Lieutenant William Evan Davies acting as an observer they were sent on an artillery observation mission over Vermand, France, around 10km north-west of Saint Quentin. Unfortunately, on their mission their aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire, burst into flames and nosedived, crashing near Pontru, which lies around 5km north-east of Vermand. It was reported that Davies – a Welshman serving with the 10th Battalion Canadian Infantry 🇨🇦, jumped from the fiery, out of control plane at a height of 600ft (180m). Both men were killed in the crash. 2nd Lt. Mason was 23 years old. Lt. Davies was 24 years old. They were buried together close to where the crashed, slightly south of Maissemy. By the end of the war there were eight Commonwealth soldiers, including three unknown soldiers, buried in the isolated location. After the war all eight were moved to Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension 🇨🇵 for their final resting place.
