Before heading up to Latrigg for the incredible aurora display that we had last Friday, @jonny.gios, @altoppingphotography and myself took a trip to the shores of Derwent Water to capture the last of the daylight. I think we just missed the best light, and I hadnโt packed any of my filters, but the calm waters and clear visibility was great to photograph. Steady approaches to Hindscarth and Robinson followed before Dan showcasing once again that he is incapable of following or even seeing the simplest of paths, instead sidestepping down grassy slopes. At this point the heat exhaustion began setting in as I descended the steep and precarious Hassnesshow beck to finish the day. One bad slip into the fence luckily only left a scratch. On to Brandreth and Grey Knotts before descending to Honister slate mine for an egg butty and a couple of cold cans. Then a nice couple of miles run down to the smallest Wainwright of all; Castle crag. A majestic castle like fortress sitting proudly on it's hill, and a brilliant slate staircase approach, all in all a brilliant Wainwright. At this point with morale improving I pulled into Grange for another couple cold cans and a magnum before heading forth to Catbells, suddenly humans started appearing from everywhere. After a late start from London with over an hourโs delay, we finally began our much-anticipated trip to the Lake District. Despite the train journey being shorter than by car, we still spent the entire day traveling. Early start Friday morning and off we go to Cat Bells via the Derwent Water Circular. As I trudged uphill, I kept thinking, โWhy did I agree to this?โ But the stunning views and beautiful surroundings quickly reminded me why.
