The town of Steynsburg was founded in 1872 by Andries Petrus Johannes Steyn, who was born in the area in 1823. The town was named after Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn, the grandfather of President Paul Kruger. The earliest inhabitants of the area were the Khoikhoi people. In the 18th century, the area was settled by white farmers, who primarily raised sheep. Steynsburg was established as a trading post and service center for the surrounding farms. The town developed around the Reformed Church which was established in 1872 and was administered by a village management board under the Reformed Church. In 1874 22 plots were given to the Dutch Reformed Church and construction started on the first DRC building and the congregation formed a year later. The old cemetery on Glen Avon has a specific interest as it holds the Vault where Robert Hart Snr was laid to rest. Take a walk down the road from the Retreat homestead following the red dots to the left of the swimming pool at the little garden gate. About 200m down the road you will find the graveyard and in the back corner stands the Hart Vault. Follow the footpath around and down and you'll be able to see the inscriptions indicating which members of the Hart family are buried inside the vault. Outside Middelburg is a monument called the Stoel (chair) Monument. It's an unusual thing to have a monument for, isn't it? So what is the story? Commandant J. C. Lötter and most of the members of his commando was captured on 4 September 1901, during the Anglo Boer War. One of the top commandants in the Cape, Lötter was known for his daring “hit and run” tactics. Earlier in the war, after the British had introduced their shocking scorched earth and concentration camp policies, Lötter and the commandos did a lot of attacks in retaliation. Lötter and his right-hand man were sent to Middelburg and on October 11 sentenced to death. The following day Lötter was taken to this spot next to the Richmond Road where he was tied to a chair and shot. Three days later Wolfaardt was taken to the same place, where he shared Lötter’s fate. The two were buried in the same grave. 🐋 Each year we are extremely privileged to experience the annual migration of the Humpback Whales from their home in Antarctic northwards to the warmer waters of Mozambique & Tanzania. ✨ Females give birth to their calves in the warmer waters and during this migration, one can witness entire family groups travelling together or a mother and adolescent or simply males travelling together. 🌍 We can see the humpback whales making their northward migration to the warmer waters from as early as late May, early June and then starting with their migration back home southwards any time from early September until late November, sometimes into December. Recently I went to shoot some photos of a cycling event in Nieu-Bethesda. A small village in the Eastern Cape. The Saturday ride ended off at a local brewery. As I was taking photos around the building, I noticed a bunch of coffee beans on the ground next to 2 weird contraptions. I then realized that they are coffee roasters. I was obvious excited by this realization. I went in to get some beans. They had two "kinds" medium and strong. I asked what the difference was.
