Do you love Monarch butterflies and wish there was something you could do to help them? 🪴Evelyn Serrano, Director of the Audubon Center at Debs Park, leads a passionate team of environmental educators working to connect people with the natural world right in the heart of Los Angeles. The team regularly collaborates with their wonderful partners and community scientists to build sustainable habitat for Monarchs, local birds and other wildlife. Over the weekend, Evelyn presented the team’s Monarch work at the 2024 Statewide Conference for Environmental and Outdoor Education hosted by the Association of Environmental Outdoor Educators (@caeoe) in Orange County. The conference also included Keynote Speaker @queerbrownvegan who raised the standard for environmental advocacy and action. Between sessions, folks had the opportunity to attend workshops ranging from poetry to equity in environmental education. A rather eye-catching fern, silvery spleenwort (Deparia acrostichoides) is easily identified given both its relatively large size and the presence of dense, weak hairs along the stipe and rachis. 🍉🍉🍉 Our favorite watermelon scented mushroom! Dryad’s saddle, Cerioporus squamosus. 🧚♀️🐴 🍄 Don’t get so caught up in morel hunting that you miss out on these tasty dudes. We find them on standing or fallen deciduous trees, especially beech and sycamore. These were on a stump Juniper happened to crawl down under our picnic bridge to check out! 🪶🪶🪶 The tops of these mushrooms have a beautiful feathery pattern, earning them their other common name of pheasantback. Underneath, you’ll find a hypnotizing pattern of pores. And of course, the scent is a great way to help with identification once you get to know it! A few weeks ago, I got time to go down to one of my favourite places to visit in the spring in Toronto: Tommy Thompson Park. The "Wet Woods" at the base of TTP are great for birding in the spring, since the park sticks out into Lake Ontario and it's one of the few forested green spaces along the lakeshore, so lots of birds stop there on migration. I got an unexpected special treat of a rare sighting for that area: a mink! Usually the mink in the park hang out further south in the large ponds and wetlands. But this one was hanging out around the puddles in the woods. Hunting? Denning? Who knows! But it was fun to see! And my partner and I also got swooped non-threateningly by a red-tailed hawk, so I had to make a little comic about it. Great day. While walking on the beach I noticed all these teeny tiny sand balls and I was intrigued… I stopped and waited and soon enough a tiny crab emerged from the central hole! Meet Dotilla intermedia - its genus carries the common name of Sand Bubbler Crabs. My mantelpiece before yesterday housed the many, many natural objects I had picked up on my walks - anemones, shells, pebbles, feathers, bones, crabs, fir cones… and old family keepsakes and things we had made over time - vintage ornaments, needlefelt fox, the origami froggy army… But it all got a bit overwhelming. There was barely an inch of space left and everything (the whole house basically) had got so dusty when I was off my feet that I just wanted to clear it all, clean, and start again. A mini-mission to cut ceanothus, bluebells and geraniums from the garden gave me a reason to go out and I now have brought some beauty in my environment, co-creating with nature, that keeps making me smile. Of course I still had to make room for a little nature scene. At our latest Nature Journal Club meeting we found these holes in the sand and assumed they were from sand bees or ants. iNaturalist IDers then suggested sand beetles - mind blown! 🤩 I had observed the suggested species very close to the burrows a few weeks earlier. it also explained another club member’s amazing observation of larvae popping out of holes like a Jack-in-the-box! A new shoot of asparagus makes for a great ladybug perch 🐞 . Was anyone else ever told that a ladybugs spots were how old it was? Turns out - that’s false. The spots however do have significance in identifying different species. The bright red/orange and black on a ladybug is known as aposematic colouration - a deterrent for predators as ladybugs produce alkaloids which make them unpalatable to spiders, ants and other predators. The brighter the colours, the higher level of toxins the insect has. Headshot of a Wood Duck drake that floated right past me. Nothing too fancy, but I love Wood Ducks and really wanted a portrait on my page. I have always wanted to be able to spend significant time with Wood Ducks, but had struggled to find reliable places to photograph them where I might be able to get close enough. I was fortunate to find that there were quite a few at a nearby natural area, and got to spend some time watching them. Camouflage definitely helped, as I was laying under a camouflage scarf and the ducks simply did not notice me. A really great experience overall, and I look forward to spending more time with them, as I watch and learn about their behavior and hopefully develop a catalog of images devoted to such a beautiful duck. Also, really looking forward to visiting the Tetons in a couple of weeks and shooting with @matthew.ross.photography.
