Nice group of folks, we were led into part of the park I certainly would’ve not found on my own, and rambled past sunny bellflower, widows cross, skull cap, yellow milkweed, Nashville red root, and as you can see, cactus. Great way to spend a few hours on a Saturday morning. Also appropriate to post today, since tomorrow is Mother’s Day and my mom was a gardener and flower enthusiast, and as time goes on, I find more and more solace in nature, as well. We still have some openings for our annual Mother’s Day Wildflower Walk! Join us on Sunday, May 12th, for a leisurely stroll at the Bentley Nature Preserve in search of spring wildflowers and other seasonal happenings. The walk will follow the beautiful Pamela A. Westrom Wildflower Trail, a picturesque loop trail that traverses foot bridges over a stream that weaves through the property. This year, we are offering two walk times – one starting at noon, led by retired biology teacher and Conservancy preserve steward Dan Anderson, and one starting at 2pm, led by local naturalist Jack Gulvin. The Bentley Nature Preserve (located on Bentley Avenue just off Fluvanna Avenue Extension / Route 430 in Jamestown) is a typical wooded wetland, so there may be wet or muddy conditions in spots. Making the most of the sunshine ☀️ Belgrave Hall is a hidden gem in Leicester, and the gardens are worth a visit. It's also opposite Belgrave Meadows with a footpath along the river. There aren't any food and drink options at the Hall but a short drive away are the various stops on the Great Central Railway line which have vintage style cafes and on a sunny weekend, they are a great place to sit with a cup of tea and watch the steam trains go by. This weekend also involved a trip to Attenborough Nature Reserve - first sunglasses outing of the year. There are a couple of footpath sections closed at the moment, so make sure you check before you go. Otherwise, you'll end up retracing your steps like we did and forget to take any photos! 𝙾𝚌𝚎𝚊𝚗𝚜 𝚘𝚏 𝚋𝚕𝚞𝚎𝚋𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚜 This post is different from my usual plant stories: a bit of bluebell myth busting! Many people believe that bluebells are ‘fully protected’ under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Another popular view is that the non-native Spanish bluebell is threatening our wild native bluebells by interbreeding (hybridizing) with it. In England and Wales, bluebells are protected against commercial sale of the flowers, bulbs or seed, and, as for all wildflowers, against uprooting by anyone without landowner consent. But not against picking under the 1981 Act. So, is it ok to pick bluebells? First, under common law, you need permission as all wild plants are (sadly!) the property of the landowner. Many people argue that taking only a few stems of a wild plant is sustainable. However, I'd say it depends on the species, and sustainability includes making ethical decisions - asking ourselves questions, such as how many other people are picking from a site? Is there monitoring of the plant population? How do I know for sure that I am doing no harm to the ecosystem? And as the BSBI/Natural England Code of Conduct for collecting wild plants puts it, do I need this wild flower more than the insects that depend upon it? With bluebells, many people argue we shouldn't pick because Britian has a responsibility to care for these flowers, with almost half of the world’s population. In other words, *not* picking bluebells is simply the right thing to do. So what is threatening bluebells? In 2023, a team led by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh found that: • the non-native bluebells in Britain are not Spanish bluebells but the hybrid between Spanish and native bluebell. • There is little evidence of large-scale introgression (ie. the hybrid back-crossing with native bluebells). The whole of the research paper needs reading, but it’s unlikely there’s ‘extinction by hybridisation' happening. The hybridisation story distracts from the 3 main threats to bluebells: loss of woodland; trampling; and lack of woodland management by coppicing. If you want to help protect bluebells, buy locally-sourced coppice charcoal!

Calling all flower lovers! This is a reminder that the Redwood Coast Land Conservancy is hosting a wildflower walk on Sunday, May 5. Join California Native Plant Society members Mary Hunter and Julia Larke for a guided walk at Mill Bend Preserve. All are welcome to join this springtime tradition. Thanks to recent hard work by the California Conservation Corps and many volunteer hours, you will have a beautiful view of the Gualala River estuary from the trail. Enjoy seeing the occasional banana slug, maybe a newt, and of course a variety of wildflowers. This April we have been seeing the Calypso Orchid, Spotted Coralroot, and Pink Flowering Currant as well as many others. With the recent rains, we may see unexpected fungi and lichen of various kinds. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the unpredictable weather. Sunday, May 5 at 10:00 AM: Please join California Native Plant Society members Mary Hunter and Julia Larke for a guided walk at Mill Bend Preserve. All are welcome to join this springtime tradition. Thanks to recent hard work by the California Conservation Corps and many volunteer hours, you will have a beautiful view of the Gualala River estuary from the trail. Enjoy seeing the occasional banana slug, maybe a newt, and of course a variety of wildflowers. This April we have been seeing the Calypso Orchid, Spotted Coralroot, and Pink Flowering Currant as well as many others. With the recent rains, we may see unexpected fungi and lichen of various kinds. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the unpredictable weather. The walk usually lasts about an hour or longer depending on the speed and interests of the group. Don’t forget your camera! In the sunny weather on Saturday, our Juniors were treated to a brilliant botany walk around Port Soif headland led by Botany Section Secretary Helen Litchfield 🌼🌸🌿 Our Juniors were thoroughly engaged as we spotted all sorts of native plants and wildflowers and Helen was very impressed by their knowledge!
