The commercial blocks on West Bridge Street (113-151) were platted as half-blocks, when the city was originally laid out. This allowed many of the buildings to have both north and south public entrances. � The first Owatonna post office was located on the north side of the street. Across the street, the Morehouse Block was located at 113 W Bridge; the upstairs rooms held an auditorium used for operas and other performances. Later, the Kelly Company, a diversified department store, occupied several of the buildings on the south side of the street. 😯😍🪹 A NEW NEIGHBOR ATTEMPTS TO MOVE IN 🪹😍😯 For the past couple of weeks, there has been a new raptor viewing opportunity here in Wabasha. A pair of Ospreys is busy trying to build a nest atop the light towers at one of Wabasha's older baseball diamonds. Longtime National Eagle Center volunteer and photographer Guy Marshall was able to capture and share these images of one of the pair carrying sticks to the top of the light tower. Ospreys eat live fish almost exclusively, and the habitat around the ball fields where this individual is attempting to build a nest is excellent for a couple of key reasons. 1) Ospreys prefer to nest on a high position (a tree, a cliff, or even a human-made platform) with open surroundings. This ball field location is ideal in that regard! 2) They want to be close to water and a source of fish. The Mississippi River backwaters are right across the street from the light tower and just a few blocks from the river's main channel. It is no mystery why this pair is attempting to build a nest where they are. However, "attempting" is the key word in this case because, despite their best efforts, the sticks are not staying in place atop the tower. They are providing a very cool viewing opportunity, but it is looking more and more likely that they will not be successful at this particular location which is a shame. Hopefully, if they are forced to relocate, they won't move too far away because having resident Ospreys is a very cool and educational viewing opportunity for residents and visitors alike.
