When the sun is trying to rise but the Aurora is not done yet! It was a great night for Aurora, and it seemed to get even stronger in the hour or so before sunrise. The very edge of the horizon was getting brighter, and bringing with it shades of orange. But just above it were swirls of green and pillars of purple! North Shore hikes ————————— everything 🌊 Idk why or how we waited so long since living in the Midwest to visit this amazing area in Minnesota. I already can’t wait to go back. Split Rock Lighthouse State Park absolutely lives up to the hype. Tons of trails with scenic overlooks, the rocky coast of Lake Superior, and the trail manners of others we passed along the way - 12/10. 🥾 Took Cook on a little solo hike to this outcrop of beach, we enjoyed the sunshine and peace. ☀️ (we are part of the @ryokeninstinct team)
Wildfire Sunrise Split Rock Lighthouse While trying (and failing due to lingering wildfire smoke) to capture the Milky Way a couple nights ago with @vivmueller70 I noticed the way the color of the moon became more rich and reddish as it set. It reminded me of this image I captured a few years ago. Since I took this shot, I’ve tried to capture similar images there during periods of wildfire smoke but found out it’s really dependent on the amount of smoke in the sky. Too much and the sun doesn’t show up until it’s much higher. Not enough and it’s too bright. I got really lucky the first time and I’m grateful to have captured this image.

Still processing both mentally and digitally the experience of Friday night. In a single night, I captured aurora photos of MN North Shore landmarks that I expected to be chasing for many more years! This first post is my most fortunate shot of the night, combining: 1. Split Rock Lighthouse 2. A G5 solar storm 3. The international space station streaking down right towards the lighthouse! I happened to be just in the right place at the right time. Looking up I saw the ISS coming over my head and had just enough time to drop my tripod and adjust for a longer exposure to catch it in motion. In my very next shot after this, it was already fading away into the distance and gone! Back in 2022, I faced numerous challenges and successes, both professionally and personally. At the time as a City Carrier Assistant (CCA) for the United States Postal Service (USPS), I approached the end of my first contract year in August that year and was required to take five days of non-pay time off, which my accumulated paid time off (PTO) covered. I carefully planned a memorable solo vacation to Minnesota, which included a road trip along historic Highway 61. During my trip, I explored the western shore of Lake Superior, experiencing the culture, history, and natural beauty of the area. This trip allowed me to recharge and reflect on my accomplishments as a mail letter carrier in Year 1, and I look forward to returning to Minnesota soon! In the near future, I might explain in more detail on what exactly I did on this trip. 📍 Split Rock Lighthouse, Minnesota It’s hard to preserve the white of the paper for the stars and Moon when using a pencil to sketch skyscapes. I cut a frisket for the Moon to protect it from graphite. The stars I created before laying the sky down by using a white pencil and pressing down to create a depression. When I went back and sketched in the sky’s tone, the pencil would not touch the small depressions I created. Here’s Lookin’ at You - Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Minnesota I was finally able to make it to Split Rock at a time when the moonrise happened around the time of sunset and the cloud cover was perfect - not too much, not too little and great position to frame the moon. One of the great things about this location around sunset is that the lowering sun casts beautiful light on the lighthouse and almost make it looks like it is glowing. This was a beautiful winter evening to scramble along the landscape and get various vantage points as the moon rose. The abnormal lack of ice for the time of year made it less of a risky venture. Walking into Friday with full hearts and a camera roll full of waterfalls. 🥹🫶🏻 We just returned home from a short mid-week trip up to the incomparable North Shore. Mid-April is a weird time up there… it could be winter, it could be spring, it could be both. Luckily, we found ourselves there for a very epic waterfall season!
